    Absolutely, I can relate to that frustration. I often find myself manually searching for my favorite channels or clicking on the Subscriptions Tab to hunt down a specific channel because, as you mentioned, it seems like notifications occasionally slip through the cracks. It can be quite a hassle, but staying dedicated to the content you love is worth the extra effort.

    I completely agree with you. I am not a content creator, yet. As a viewer and subscriber I have become increasingly annoyed with the changes happening at UA-cam. That has spurred me on to searching for other platforms to support. Clearly the philosophy has changed at UA-cam. UA-cam does not seem to be creator or supporter friendly anymore. It seems like greed is taking over the company and that is unlikely to change.
    As for Patreon, my hope is that creators will offer very low dollar amount levels along with their higher options because there are some channels that I would like to support even if I don't really fit in with their target demographic. For example, I am not an artist that draws but I find your videos on this channel and your Creators First channel to be very useful so I would like to show my support even if I don't have need for the art tutorials.
    Anyway, thank you for posting this video. I think UA-cam is having their "jump the shark" moment so it's likely time for everyone (creators and viewers) to start looking around for other options. Best of luck to you.

    Yeah, UA-cam started nagging me last week about running an ad blocker. They want me to spend a lot of money on Premium or shut off my ad blocker and watch the ads. They were going to cut off my access after 3 videos. I can't stand advertising, so my time on UA-cam has gone through the floor. Waiting for the next best thing.

    I dislike shorts, and for long form video content (including streaming TV), I watch about 95% UA-cam. Disappointing that UA-cam is trending towards short, viral clips and away from the quality content that creators like yourself have been producing for many years

    I totally hate shorts, first I unsubscribed from everyone that had more than 5 shorts on his channel, but then youtube started showing them in my subscription page separately, so I was forced to install an extension on microsoft edge "noshortsplease" to prevent them from showing up in my list. I just hate them, why can't they make normal videos and if you use your phone, the correct way to hold your phone is diagonally. Anyways, I hope you never leave youtube, because even when I'm not that active in drawing and painting anymore, I still love to watch your videos.

    I think segmenting your content on to different channels as well as turning comments off on a lot of your videos probably didn't help. Just a thought. Also, I'm pretty sure UA-cam can still show ads on your videos if they want to even when you turn them off. I believe they added that to the Terms last year or maybe the year before.

    • @aaronrutten
      @aaronrutten  11 місяців тому +3

      I have experimented with comments seveal times over the years and it hasn't had a measurable effect either way in my analyitics. Segmenting defintely did have at least some effect, but other channels are having the same problem who have not done that.
      Also in regards to showing ads on videos where I disabled them, it only applies to channels not in the YPP: support.google.com/youtube/answer/2475463?hl=en

    I really hate shorts: you can't put them into a playlist or skip around in the video. UA-cam also angered a ton of people with their recent Anti-Adblock where they were cutting off our ability to watch videos if we had an adblocker enabled. Way to alienate your user base youtube.

    UA-cam gave me a warning for a "spam" comment the other day, which I think was because I used words suggestive of software piracy(but were actually about open-source alternatives). It's discouraging as a user too. I want to leave detailed commentary on creator's videos. They put a lot of work in, and I want to respect that.

    The other thing about short form is its ruined every platform. Most creators are just uploading the same content to IG, FB, tik tok and YT. So the days of looking at art on IG, fan pages on FB, long form on YT and streams on Twitch are over. Its all watered down now.

    Shorts are just a distraction. I've found myself spiraling downward on a shorts/tik tok binge at times. The thing that always stands out is how i always walk away feeling like i wasted a huge chunk of time with no return on investment. If others are like me, they don't actually enjoy short form content, they just get sucked into the vortex.

Plus, there are less people in the market now to buy pen displays. Shorts has killed long form. I am pivoting to live streaming and havent posted in 6 months. Im not giving up but I am doing new content. (At some point)

    What a great video Aaron. I've been looking at the past 2 years at my own insights and have come to the same conclusion. The short video format works well for entertainers and comedians, but a large group of us artists rarely are all that.
    Once we were comfily growing our audiences with nary a problem, garnering thousands of views, likes and shares, growing our livelihoods alongside it and now even with all that growth and improvement we garnered over the years, our reach is limited to about 1 to 5% unless it somehow triggers several little algorithmic keystones that make things go viral.
    I too can recommend to everyone out there that it's probably good to have social media around, but focus on your products on the side. Either things come around again for us on social media, or it won't. Either way, if you don't put all your eggs in this basket of treadmilling content out, you'll have nothing to fear!
    And I agree Aaron, if sponsors and clients want to monetize your videos, they better pay you good, ideally based even more on how well the video does!

  • @Neatrior

    I’ll be honest the landscape of UA-cam has changed dramatically. Art stuff used to be viewed regularly. Jazza is having the same issue even if his channel is able to maintain a few hundred thousand views, it is still gradually decreasing every year. It’s the algorithm that’s changed heavily not viewers. It’s recommending videos that don’t even make sense. I don’t have a channel that I upload to but have been getting videos into my recommended that have nothing to do with what I watch. Why?
    I think it might have something to do with peak interest or actually how many people find that video in their feed. I’ve seen countless times where a video released a decade ago somehow gets Viral only because it’s recommended to so many people. Curiosity gets the better of you after your recommended it over 10 times. Wacky thing is it could have the most default thumbnail ever generated by UA-cam but it will still get the views. This means that in my eyes at least. The thumbnail does not matter at all. It could be a photo that doesn’t have anything to do with the video and it will still gets clicks only because of what I previously mentioned.
    TL:DR you are not to blame. UA-cam changes the algorithm all the time. It has failed to help smaller channels with niche topics or content and only appeals to trending stuff/big established UA-camrs. This is bad because it’s against diversity in the UA-cam Ecosystem. And sometimes, it does not make sense either way. Wacky nonsense.

    wow youtube goes greedy years ago and starts offering cash incentives for content and it makes big channels big money but then along comes competition with short content making as many click-throughs in an hour as big channels make all day because 'long content is long' and decided that they had to adapt so they implemented shorts, found it to be the cash cow they wanted due to heavily established infrastructure, forced conversion is necessary and that includes forcing ads on people who have no interest in those nonse and the people who thought the offer of making money from ads pushed by the platform was a good business model are now finding out how stupid it was of them to bite that golden apple
    i got no sympathies for distressed creators who took the google cash, they made the choice to put their future in the hands of a company who decided the motto 'dont do evil' was a Bad Thing and had it removed from all google property

    • @aaronrutten
      @aaronrutten  11 місяців тому +1

      There in lies the problem. You want us to create content but you aren't willing to support it directly. There's nothing wrong with creators making money, we shouldn't have to work for free, just like you don't. But I agree that ad revenue was not the best way to make that possible. It was the only option at the time because of this "free content" attitude.

I’m thinking this because I self-published a book a long time ago and had it on Audible. It was doing well. Then everyone started self-publishing and then it just did average. Venues come and go. I think UA-cam might be on its way out for many people and that means there’s something new and better out there that will become popular next.

Even creators that have been on since YT started 15 years ago have noticed low volume across the board. They are killing what made YT special in the first place in favor of mainstream media.

    I went ahead and bought UA-cam premium for my viewing experience, but prior to that I wasn't watching it anymore due to the way UA-cam inserts ads. I completely understand that ads need to happen to generate revenue; however, the way they are inserted was extremely disturbing to me. They're just stuck in randomly in the middle of sentences or important segments, which is jarring and takes me out of the flow. If they were inserted at natural breaks, or where creators planned for a break, I could take it, but I can't deal with them the way they are. It's also why I stopped watching TV - completely. Now, I decided to buy UA-cam Premium, as I said. But a lot of people I know are going elsewhere.

Instead, I watch real content such as yours Aaron and I’ve been doing this for years because of the admiration I have for how hard you and other artists work. That you share knowledge of art and tablets is generous, you’ve always been a beacon in the dark. I love how well you edit what you record and waste no time saying what you mean.

Today is the first chance I’ve had to stop by and say hello and ensure you know how precious you’ve been to the art community.
