I have the fantastic US Flicker Alley blu ray set...the same films and restorations...but I'm tempted to get this too. The extras are superior are seems. But this is really just a historical taster of the silent Laurel and Hardy shorts. They didn't get fully into their stride until 1928 ( these films will be featured in the next Flicker Alley release, coming soon). I've loved Laurel and Hardy since the 1960's, when their films were constantly on tv. Strange that you didn't take to Sons Of The Desert. The absolute quintessential Laurel and Hardy feature and one of the greatest comedies of the 1930s in many people's eyes. But very much looking forward to your reviews of these shorts. And hopefully Eureka will continue with the series. For the cream of the Laurel and Hardy silents 1928/29 are the years to cherish. Two Tars, Big Business, We Faw Down, Liberty, Double Whoopee, Angora Love etc. A nice version of Birth Marks is featured on the Laurel and Hardy Definitive Restorations blu ray set from MVS Visual released a couple of years ago. Its a region free US 4 disc set of mainly sound shorts and features. Cheers;
Paul Merton writes notes on all 15 films in the booklet of this release, and teases that one of L&H's 1928 films is one of the "funniest films ever made" and that it will be in "volume 2 of this collection." So I think it's safe to say a 1928 set will be coming from Eureka :)
Growing up, I watched them when I could. I even had 8mm film of some of their movies. A Minneapolis tv station showed their movies on the weekend a lot. One of my favorites was from 1929 though, called Wrong Again. A classic mix up movie.
This boxset has just arrived for me, I'm a big Laurel and Hardy fan! I look forward to watching everything on the set and I'll also look forward to seeing your longer review of everything on the set. Since Neil Brand and Patrick Vasey are featured on this blu ray set, I'd like to say that I've met Patrick Vasey once and I've seen Neil Brand live twice, both times he was presenting Laurel and Hardy.
Hey Luke. My favourite L&H film is called County Hospital, its a short from 1932, and I found it very funny. The usual highjinks that you would come to expect from these two, especially in a setting with as much comic potential as a hospital. Also, I have just ordered my first ever MOC Blu-Ray, its Serpico by Sidney Lumet, looking forward to checking it out.
Just ordered my copy, but it's already "Available on back order" so I'm not at all the only person to order this video. Loved your review, which of course prompted me to make the purchase, so well done.
I wasn't going to get this as I already have the Flicker Alley release, which has the same films. However, that one has commentaries from one guy on all films, and the extras on the Eureka release are also better.

I have a feeling the film Paul Merton is referring to is Two Tars...a classic! But they made some great films in 1928.

I think a lot of people watched their films on TV growing up, they're just a worldwide institution I think. 8mm, nice! A different experience I bet.

Oh wow that's very cool. I hope you enjoy the set.

Nice! Serpico is a great film, I watched/reviewed that last year.

Nice! I hope you don't regret it haha. I'm having the best time working through all of these films.
Just pre order convoy 4k steelbook 😊
Like Laurel and hardy, they're so funny together.
Indeed they are!
You the best
Funniest Duo ever.
Can't think of another that would rival them really!

Yeah there doesn't seem to be an insignificant difference between the two sets, which is nice.
