      +Harold Stone Affirmative. I flew the A-1 Skyraider with your father out of NKP RTAFB in NE Thailand in 1970-1971. I had posted two pictures of your father for you a couple of weeks ago. For lots of pictures, audio, squadron data, training class photos and other records, see www.skyraider.org.

      +Alan Young We heard some pretty interesting stories about his time there. Would you please send me a short email about what it was like to fly with him? Based on the stories he told he was kind of a hot shot. hc.stone@yahoo.com. Thank you.

      +Tuco Ramirez The key is that the Skyraider has an extremely tough airframe and piston engine designed for carrier operations. It's meant to take a pounding. It is also very stable and flies at lower air speeds and has lower wing loading than turbine fighters, so aerodynamic forces are a bit less violent. It is also big and has many empty spaces within the fuselage and wings, so many projectiles went through and on out the other side without destroying something critical. It also has heavy aluminum armor right around the cockpit. So it kept on flying even with some radical battle damage. The A-10 shares the same heritage in its even more redundant design. The real key is just how over-built and strong the plane is. If the AAA didn't kill you or damage the engine very badly a wounded Skyraider would get you out of the strike area safely. My worst day was a 12.7 mm AAA hit in a 20 mm ammo can. Big hole. You could see the ground down through the wing but it still flew well.

    Used to watch these guys fly out of NKP and cross the border into Laos on the way to operations. I was totally impressed by these aircraft as they taxied out. Not as loud or fast as the Thuds when they lifted off the runway at Korat but saving those downed pilots in Indian country was a big job.

      I used to ride in a jolly green giant going on runs to pick up packets of things needed to run the war. (Things that were needed to destroy downed birds like a F111A that just didn’t get back to Thailand and end up in Laos) Aardvarks were a thing of beauty, taking off from the alert apron and up into air and then pulling their wings back and flying off to support groung groups or as an intel plane flying in low just off the floor of tge jungle and leaving before they knew what had hit them.

      I believe this design, and another prototype by Martin, were specifically requested as carrier based heavy support aircraft for the anticipated invasion of Japan. One of the great planes of history for sure.

I was Seated in the cockpit (next to an instructor) & I was starting that monster while the instructor was yelling at me for calling out the Wrong hydraulic pressures ! All this over the smoke & noises from start up. Something ya never forget ! Loved it all

    My grandfather flew these low and slow targeting the Ho Chi Minh Trail during the “secret war” in Laos and Cambodia. Sometimes flying as low as 10 feet over the jungle tree line. He was based in Thailand and flew 192 missions. He said he hated killing the elephants which sometimes were carrying supplies for the VC/NVA forces.

    The navy called them Spads, the Air Force called them Sandy's, but nothing in the flying inventory could supply extended close air support like the Skyraider, people think that the prop planes are to outdated for current combat, I would point at the AC130 aircraft, also any theater of operation that helicopters can operate, propeller driven gunships would also be effective, and a lot cheaper than jets or helicopters.

      Even the OV-10 Bronco still sees action here and there to this day! Some modified G variants were used to great success against ISIS, employing the APKWS (Hydra 70 with a mid-body distributed aperture laser guidance fin kit) to minimize collateral damage. Once again props proved to be precise and economic, so in short very efficient. It's also why I personally dislike the A-10 as anything other than a morale booster.

Talk about versatility and durability!

    What i love about The A1 Sky Raider was..not just the beauty of the aircraft itself but the ability n capability it represents. A1 was really was a flying tank! Fully Armed to the teeth n gum!! it has very strong n sturdy airframe build that enables it withstands such punishment from natures element n operations anywhere from rough,small n short runway airfield..even on dirt road or hi way if it had too..hours n hours of loitering time ability which are very essential n important not just for S.A.R mission,also for Recon,S.A.D n COINS missions too!the most best part was it can be upgraded with latest techs..it was not accident prone, (widow maker) very forgiving, safe n easy aircraft to fly(saves lots off cost n training hours for new pilots)fuel efficient,good flying or operation hours,easy to repair n low cost maintenance which were very important for a small country to have in their airforce like for example the south vietnam airforce to operate at that time. i would love to hv a bunch of fully armed to the teeth n gum A1 in my base as my personal low flight ops fighter-bomber Hahaha..

    Douglas would later develop the Skyraider into the turboprop-powered A2D Skyshark. Unfortunately, it never entered service as the Allison T40 engine that powered it proved unreliable. Besides, Douglas was also at work on the pure-jet-powered F3D/F-10 Skyknight, which proved much better. By Vietnam, US forces were using the Vought A-7 Corsair II.

    I watched (from another aircraft) as, time after time, "fast movers" were sent out to do tactical strikes against enemy positions in Vietnam. They would show up, take 10 minutes to figure out where the enemy was, drop one or two bombs and then head back to their base to refuel. In other words, they were just about USELESS to accomplish anything of importance. ONLY these 'low and slow" ..."prop" fighters were able to do ANYTHING against the Vietcong and/or North Vietnamese regiments. They had the loiter time to "nail" the location of enemy positions and the armament and TIME to make multiple strikes on them. We should have had MORE of them in Vietnam...and not just for SARS missions.

      Did you get to see how the A-7 performed, by any chance? From a technology standpoint and lower speed, the pilot should've been able to engage the enemy more quickly and easily. That is compared to say the common F-4, but I don't know which types you saw of course, perhaps Huns as well.

    While not a "nice" subject...it is, indeed, impressive AND nice, to see an actual "non-Hollywooded" view of such.
    I was told the Spad could...and, would...fly and provide cover in conditions that were impossible for the then-modern jet craft, that because of it's relatively spartan design for the period, it was reliable in most any climatic extreme shown it, as in, less electronics to go haywire. Nowadays? I'd say, no way of course. But, we were still in kind of a "transition period", with good, accurate suppressing fire, I guess one could say?

    • @sheeplord4976
      @sheeplord4976 5 років тому

      It could probably still work in counter insurgency. Not very safe against modern threats, so facing people using last gen tech, it could possibly do alright. Of course, a pushed prop may be better for the added protection to engine in the strafe, tricycle gears, more space for sensors, an area for an aerial refueling probe, and better placed cannons. A modern with sensors for aiming, modern situational awareness capabilities, a new prop engine, and possible stol capabilities could be a way to lower operating costs.

    This airframe never had to search for a new role/mission. It could do many more than most. Just build brand new A-1's. Our SpecOps will find many ways and places to use them once again. Why dither with an unknown?

      We have the A-10 and we should keep it, upgrade it. Having served in combat (Afgh,Iraq, Africa and around the world) The A-10 kicked ass, saved a lot of lives and scared the hell out of the enemy.

    The A-10 was developed from the OV-10 Bronco used in Veitnam in the 1960s.
    If you google the Bronco, minus the two props, and add a slight variation to the tail to allow for the two jet engine exhausts, you'll notice the A-10 shape.

    Back in the day some military orders were so absurd that in reality they became suicide missions. Recent wars of the past like the civil war or WW1 had troops march right into the line of fire. This tactic dwindled, being last used in Vietnam. With that said, the military sacrificed many lives sending pilots on these outdated A-1's which had high losses, almost 200 lost in combat. They may have a sturdy airframe but were not a match for MiGs or SAMs. All in all the US suffered massive losses of all types of aircrafts during the Vietnam war. Compared to modern warfare, US losses of its air power superiority has been extremely minimal thanks and gladly to a better military strategy and mentality that does not believe in the idea of suicide missions anymore.

    • @sarjim4381
      @sarjim4381 7 років тому +5

      Between the Navy and the Air Force, almost 600 F-4 Phantom II's were lost in the Vietnam War to all causes. That was about 1/3 of all the F-4's deployed to Vietnam. 201 A-1's were lost to all causes, not just combat, in the same period in the war, about 20% of the number deployed. Two A-1's shot down two NVA MiG-17's while two A-1's were lost to MiG-17's. Your argument that sending A-1"s into combat in Vietnam was suicide is hardly persuasive.
