Great plane, great video - no music just the sound of the 3350 Wright radial!!
Perfectly said ... Thanks for watching ;)
@@705547 thanks for producing. See, three years on, and still making gearheads smile.
I was stationed at Na Trang In Vietnam where the Vietnamese flew these. When they took off at night it was something to see and hear. Flames would come out the hot exhaust and ground would shake as they rumbled down the runway. The power of those radials made for an amazing aircraft.
Your comment brings tears to my eyes and brings back a lot of memories. In the early 1970s I was one of the Vietnamese pilots of the VNAF 530 Fighter Squadron who flew those A-1 Skyraiders. Those were the days….. Thanks for your appreciative comment.
The VNAF 530 Fighter Squadron was based at Nha Trang in the early 70s.
@@loctran3020 Thank you for your service. I was in Nha Trang from 67 to 69. At that time the base was divided down the runway. USAF on one side and VNAF on the other side. I was with the USAF Security police K9 unit that only worked nights and we patrolled along the USAF side of the runway so I got close to the planes taking off. There was a beach at one end of the runway and spent many days there. Also spent many months on the Island off the cost. Beautiful area and country. Wish I could have been there at a more peaceful time.
@@wayned1807 Thank you both for fighting for our freedom. I was born 1969 in Nha trang too and I grew up in love with the sound of these Skyraiders everyday since my elementary school. My dad was a VNAF pilot of 518 FS in Bien hoa. The several last minutes of this video clip burst me in tears wondering how many VNAF pilots ever waved their wings saying goodbye on the last sortie.
Still no substitute for power. Flown so smoothly too. One of the most attractive and detailed Skyraiders Ive ever seen. Nice video work too. Thanks!
Glad you like it, Thanks for watching 😎👍
one of these early Sky Raiders, saved my butt the the V.N. highlands, such power and fire power, so glad I was on the side I was, thank you Sky Raiders.
Nothing better in close air support than a Huey gun ship. Thank you for your service.
Clyde Suckfinger A well-equipped A-10 is nice too!
Huey doesn't have the range or ordinance (and can't loiter). A-10 is great against hard target but flies too fast for close close air support. A-1 would compliment both in a ground support role.
Good old "Sandys!"
Appreciate your service to your nation!
I live in a Navy town, I used to hear the clatter of the Skyraider's radials overhead constantly, back in the day. The Skyraider is credited with shooting down two Mig 17 jets during the Vietnam War. A dinosaur in its own time, but too versatile to retire. One of the great airplanes of all time.
Wow that was so remarkable sir. Those pilots are the Skyraider Aces. For a turboprops versus jets.
Thunderbolts, Skyraiders and Warthogs, the Close Ground Support aircraft, will always be my favorites. Lots of engine power, lots of armor, big guns and heavy loads.
Just love the sound of these big radial engines
same engine used on the B-29
R- 3550 -26 W radial engine of 3.030 H P . Civilian Douglas DC 7 an Super Constellantion Turbo Conpound of 3.400 H P . Made Factory Wright .
My favorite piston-powered plane! Flew low and slow loitered for the VC over Khe Sanh!
Skyraiders were the A-10 Warthogs of their day!
Not many pilots can display an aircraft as smoothly as this. Brilliant 😊😊😊
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching my video 😎👍
I love the Sky Raider, it's a fantastic aircraft, and to think that a piston engined aircraft was carrying out CAS tasks in the age of aircraft like the F-4 Phantom in late 1960's is unbelievable.
So nice to see a pilot that knows how to take off a tail dragger! Great aircraft! Great pilot! Great show!
A big airplane. It's like, what 12 feet from the cockpit to the ground? Massive beast. A Spitfire would look like a toy next to it.
A real beast 😎 Thanks for watching my video👍
....we got covered by the "Spads" out of Pleiku all the time working Dak To, Ben Het, and Dak Seang West of Kontum in 1970. When a couple of Charlie Models or Snakes wouldn't do it...the Spads and A-37's helped out. Fabulous airplane! "Stick" Gator 11, 119th AHC, An Khe/Pleiku '69/'70
Jack, my father was a Dust Off pilot flying out of Pleiku in 67-68. He was shot down a couple of times during that time and found one of his best friends in the form of a Sky Raider pilot that gave support to his survival. They remained friends until his passing . I have quite the soft spot in my heart for that beast of an airplane.
You sir should write a memoir about the time you served in Nam
My father flew the AD-4 in the US Navy very late 1950s. Thank you for this video, one of the best I've seen from ground level of a show.
Glad you enjoyed my video. Thanks for watching 😎👍
A plane with a derivative of a B-29 engine [ie. an R-3350] that was still in active combat service two decades after WW2.
Three decades actually....
Truly a testament to the saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
I was a plain captain on the AD-1 at Corpus Christi Texas 1963 -1964 VT-30,a/c # 101 and 102 we trained Vietnamese pilots.Every day I would have to go out and start these huge 3350 engines up and check out all instruments and power settings, man what a power house!!!Thank you for these memories. David in Ft. worth Texas
Skyraiders are big and can deliver a wide range of bad news to the enemy. This is an outstanding example . Very cool stuff.
The space behind the pilot was enough for ten people or for bringing patients to the MASH units and Cargo as well what an incredible aircraft and the Skyraiders was a blessing to the troops as the name denotes it was a beast against ground targets and utilities aircraft, and like the gentleman in the comments said it was sheer bliss when it came to knocking out machine gun nests and taking out enemy infantry .I love the seemingly simple lines but of course it all had its purpose and was a instant hit the brave pilots who flew them and she could get you back...Skyraider my favourite aircraft
What impresses me, is the engine used was the same one on the B-29 Superfortress, no wonder this thing could fly with all the ordinance it had!
What a tremendous sound.
A nod to the P-47 and the Pacific-era Radial Engine aircraft in the design of this one.
I was crew chief on A1E Skyraiders in Nam and Thailand. Pilot let me fly it for about 30 minutes over Manila Bay in Philippines. We did these maneuvers. Quite a thrill.
The starting up sounds like an old Diesel engine struggling to fire up but once it does, the sound was just great. Wow, 6 weapon stations per wing. This beast sure packs a punch when armed to the teeth.
That is one badass aircraft!
Big credit to the camera op. Nice work, following that flight.
Thanks ☺
Sandy! Guardian angel any american soldiers in Vietnam war! Long live and thank you!😍😍😍😍
Genial!
Start up, Bild, Sound, Sonne und Mond, hammer Flugzeug!
Tolles Video!
Danke!
Danke fürs Anschauen! Ein sehr beeindruckendes Flugzeug, und perfekt vorgeflogen. Und der Sound erst, war ein tolles Erlebnis :)
Excellent pilot skills.
This is absolutely a beautiful display of aeronautics
Beautiful combat aircraft. I really like this warbird.
A massive powerful beast 👹 Thanks for watching my video 😁👍
Massive beast .... the bulldog of the airplane 👍
A P-51 Mustang looks like a toy compared to the Skyraider. It´s impressiv if you stand in front of it. And it´s heavy sound 😀
great Plane, great camera work. Thanks a lot.
Thanks for kind words and watching my video :)
Beautiful radial engined Skyraider .
Very impressive plane 👍 Thanks for watching my video 😎
Listening to a Skyraider idle on the flight deck reminded me of the same sound at a drag strip listening to a Funny Car or Rail idle. The flight deck is one of the most dangerous places to work... very noisy without MIckey Mouse ears! Jet exhaust and props! We had a kid walk into a prop, which ended his young life!
Hi,,, have a good time,,, amazing FLying in this splendid SKYRIDER,,
Greetings,,, and thanks of the video,,
Congratulaciones,,, your friend Oscar de Playa del Carmen Q R México,,, ,
Glad you enjoyed it, Thanks for watching my video 😎👍
Sounds fab. Nothing sounds like a rad.
In doing so, the missions and tasks of this aircraft admire the pilots for completing the mission.
Perfect Invader!
What a beautiful beast...the best looking single engine airplane...
The Skyraider poetry in Motion
This bird was at the top of the list as to what the NVA and VC feared the most.
my dad once was at beach, meaning to get in his 2 1/2 to truck he heard this bird growing in noise. he looked into the beach horizon, couldnt see anything. but he could hear it grow., then he realized the sun was in the way. eventually he heard this bird fly over. his eye balls rattled. it was awesome for him. august 1969
You can't really tell how big the A4 really is, until it's got a pilot in the cockpit or people standing next to it, it's a pretty big Aircraft. Meaning the other USN jets are even bigger and must land on a carrier day or night, sun or rain
In my top 10. Ed Heineman holds the spot most aviation enthusiasts have for Kelly Johnson.
I like to think of the A-1 as the inspiration for the A-10. Both excel at CAS, loiter time is awesome, built like a tank, tons of ordnance, when taken out of service the replacement doesn't do a good job, kept in service forever well past initally intended because no real solution.
If you take two Heinemann designs the A-1 and the A-26, throw on turbofans stir it up and there's the A-10. I know the GAU-8 is another beast all together but with features I posted above (the A-26 has a lot of those as well since it was in US service into Vietnam as well) and look at the firepower the A-26 had, things like
eight .50 cal. or
two 37mm cannons or
four .50 cal and a 37mm cannon or
a 75mm howitzer and two .50 cal. or
75mm and 37mm cannons.
All forward facing, in a changeable nose cone. That's a lot of concentrated firepower and I think Ed Heinemann is the grandfather of the A-10
Alter... das Teil rockt !!! DANKE für dieses Top Video !!!!!!!!!!!!!
These babes saved many pilots in Vietnam
Totally awesome and beautiful plane's and amazing flying too..you done an excellent job on this..Thank you so so much.for your videos..
Thank you for this kind words 👍 ... and Thanks for watching! ;)
705547 your welcome..
I love the rudder art
Wow, one of it’s kind, badass vehicle, love it!
Beeindruckende Vorführung.
Danke für´s Anschauen 😎👍
I remember bout 20 years ago I saw one on a trailer cuttin through Terry Bradshaw parkway in shreveport on a sunday morning while driving to work
Sad Day at Nakhon Phanom when one of the youngest pilots bellied in at end of runway with full load of stuff on all those hardpoints. Knocked me out of my bunk. His buddies covered my butt a few hours later in Laos. I was a recce pilot. Thanks Zorro.
What did you fly? I've never heard an American call it recce.
Rescue
Crews A-1s in 69-70. Zorro 22 sos “Yankee peddler”. Name of bird 680
This plane is so powerful, it can still climb without the propellers moving! 😲
That plane is beautiful 🛩+😍=beautiful plane.
Was a zorro crewchief. A lot of good work was achieved with this lion. Sar missions. Macvsog troops of the 5th SF got their butts saved by A-1s taking fire and trolling for fire to take out the bad guys OLAA out of Danang did great job. Bunch of stud pilots flew that bird.
Wonderful footage of a great aircraft.
Thanks for youre kind words 😎👍
Donald Douglas sure did build that one well. Very recognizable sound with the radial engine.
super Video. Dankeschön
Wright R-3350 Duplex-Cyclone engine, 2500 shaft horse power. And that amazing four blade prop? Wow.
The big Hornet and lightning bolt is the best paint scheme for the Skyraider! :)
Nice video... thanks for sharing.
Gorgeous!
2:34 beautiful shot
Warbirds during sunset .. can it get better ? 😎👍
What a beauty
An exemple to learn the italian adjective "Possente", more than powerful.
Haha perfect 😎👍 Thanks for watching my video.
I have heard of piston engines making exhaust trails, never seen it until now. That's crazy.
And somehow i get such a kick out of the fact they just put a cabin in the unused space in the fuselage and it didn't really change anything about the plane.
Beutiful plane. I would love to have one.
even The Sun and Moon were watching
My granddad, Col. Norman F. Repp flew the A-1 in Vietnam and has four DFC’s.
Amazing aircraft, carries more weight then the plane itself.
magnific !!! y lovet !!!
Glad you enjoyed it 😀 Thanks for watching my video 😎👍
fantastic - thank you - please would you let me know what was used to record this video.
Thanks ... uh 2016 is long ago, i think back then it was a Sony HDR-CX115. A small old Camcorder, that i replaced later with a CX625 which was much better and now i use a AX-53.
Love the Spad
The number designation is wrong, AD4N was a 3 Seat Night Fighter version, the one In the one in the video is an AD1 Skyraider. nicknames Spad, Or Sandy.
All French Skyraider were AD-4N, maybe it has now the paint of an A1. Even the owners website tells it is a AD-4N. Found a englisch history summary of F-AZDP here: www.touchdown-aviation.com/flying-legends/plane/amicale-jean-baptiste-salis/douglas-ad-4n-skyraider-f-azdp.php
And thanks for watching my video ... i always try to write the correct data of the shown plane. mostly according to the owners website.
Sandy......great plane!
You can tell that this plane means business
Fuck yeah lol well said
would love to have one
If youre hangar is big enough, go for it 😎I visit you for a new video👍
Cool plane!
the son of the SBD
there's a mistake in the title. It's not Douglas AD-4N Skyraider only Douglas A-1 Skyraider. Douglas AD-4N Skyraider is a jet plane.
you are incorrect.
The Pentagon wants light attack turboprops to preserve the expensive jet fleet in uncontested air for anti-insurgency ground support. What could this plane do fully modernized with new engine, weapons system, armor. Far more than a Tucano in every aspect and still cheap.
Especially if they could use more modern materials (Carbon fibre etc.) to make it lighter and even stronger. Could help to increase the fuel / weapons load manoeverability and speed. The possibilities are endless!
super video, Daumen hoch von mir
Why is the maintenance team on this lovely bird keeping the fuel mixture so rich?
great plane
Top. schöne Lichtstimmung
habs leider nicht mehr gesehen.
Ja Samstag abend kamen die richtigen Highlights schlag auf schlag, und es war nicht mehr so erdrückend heiß. Da hat das warten sich gelohnt.
Sweet!
It's like sitting at a drag strip listening to a rail or a funny car idling!
The advantage here is the show goes longer than 5 seconds. 😊👍
The old plant manager where I used to work was a mechanic on these in the Korean war. USMC
parfait
It must be a big joy to fly with no bombs or rockits on it,😬
..years ago Revel issued a Skyrader in the bastsrd scale of 1/43rd...
favorite warbird. Period.
My kind of airshow, no obnoxious music & the announcer knows when to be quiet.
Glad you enjoyed my video 😎👍
Great aircraft. They sure used a lot of oil, notice the exhaust mist and oil wash along the sides of the aircraft behind the engine cowling. I've always found it amazing that the Spad had a bigger payload than a B17 bomber.
It didn't have a larger bomb load maximum just the same load in a smaller platform
Is this the Skyraider that collided with a Mustang at an air show?
Yes, this Skyraider collided at Duxford with the P-51D Mustang D-FBBD "Big Beautiful Doll" in 2011.
That`s what I call a real man`s airplane . It did save many lives during vietnam . It makes me wonder what these krauts think of this single seat monster . The pilot sure put on a great flight demo .
VESCHTANTTEN! SHPEAKANZY DOYCH?
Nice.
Cool
Must be one heavy bird to fly. I can only imagine the stick forces required.
Are these still in use by the military ?
No, those old planes are now in private hands. Thanks for watching👍😎.
