It took me 30 years of trial and error to learn this stuff, you can do a lot better today. To learn more about how to find and process wild clay check out my classes ancientpottery.how/classes/
Greetings from Colombia, i love how you share in this unselfishly way, i have tried a lot to make open fire pottery but without your videos i would have never get this far, thank you.
I have never worked with clay but love your videos. I am a fiber artist that has an interest in clay though. I weave some Native American style rugs and love the southwest culture. Thanks for sharing so much knowledge with us!
Ooh! They grey stayed grey! Even if you didn't fire it hot enough to see the the final colour, the fact that it didn't discolour is a good sign! Here's hoping it whitens when fired even hotter!
I really love your adventures, wish I could be searching with you. I got a question about those Pueblo settlements, are these all archaeological registered?
Each state has its own registry of archaeological sites and if you are not a professional archaeologist you can't get access to that registry. So I have no way of looking them up and there is not a public service desk I can call to report new ruins I have found. But ruins that are right next to roads and such are usually well known and on the list.
Thanks for the journey, Andy! Excellent camera work, lighting, and directing! I know it takes extra effort to set up the camera on the ground so that you can record your truck in motion.
In-situ clay-making with a mortar and pestle for immediate analysis. Very wise. Saves you a lot of time by preventing you from gathering the wrong clay.
As a child I visited my grandparents in Ok. I made the best bowls for my grandmother out of red clay and sun dried. Colored with poke berries! Ty because I want to fire some now!😊
@Andy Ward do you have, or can you do a video on what type of clay or clays are the best for making bricks? I plan on making many bricks, to try and build a small house, cemented with ash cement, all primitively fired. I would greatly appreciate your wisdom.
Great adventures, did you get a chance to try out the yellow slip we gave you?... It does everything you would want it to and we have a pretty viable source. If it works out let us know, and we will pin point the spot for you. Great video! We enjoy the locations on this one a lot!
Great video! I just subscribed to your newsletter, got the Puki class but I also bought the 101 class as well. I am from the UK so will see how much clay I can find around where I live.
@AncientPottery I'm on Concho Creek and some of the are black and shiny. You can find little pieces of it in the wash that aren't marble shaped. It's kind of soft and I noticed while I was trying to facet a piece Play just disintegrated into a reddish play. I tested it out in the fire on a piece of pottery and it looks exactly like the red coating of the pottery in the area. I think that they're really junky pieces of garnet with all kinds of extra iron minerals in it.
Here's an additional image, drive.google.com/file/d/1CjP9p7xk24OrWRLCBWw5WXkMGBCi594q/view?usp=drivesdk. I find the marble things in wine, plumb and grape colors. The inside edge of the test plate was coated in a thin layer.
@ oh no, no snoodiness intended. I just thought you had indicated that you were there and I wondered how we had literally missed each other or if maybe you were too shy to come up and say hi.
Hello Andy, Can you make a clay Oven smoker video for us. The one you can smoke chicken, pizza, fish, anything in. Will it crack under the heat etc... Thank you. We already have your wild clay video maybe continue from that video.
@AncientPottery no Denmark. I expected the green to be like blue clay a d turn a nice and yllow. But no. It was close to a red clay area and it was just a bit lighter in collour
NO! I would soon be swamped with people mailing me clay if I started that. It's clay if it is plastic when wet, it's really that simple. Here is the video you need on how to test a new clay source ua-cam.com/video/7UcLpTB81BE/v-deo.html
Haha understandable!! I found great wild clay by the beach but there’s another thing I’m unsure of. It won’t break down no matter how long I soak it. It may be the same stuff that you found in this video - I may just grind it up and try it as a grog. Love this channel!!
question in Frasier builds video he mentioned mixing ground charcoal into clay to increase its heat resistance would a finer charcoal powder yield better results or would a grainier mixture make it better? Im asking because Im making a forge and I feel like you might be someone who might have tested this before
Hmm, charcoal, it would of course produce weaker, more porous pottery because the char would burn away in the firing leaving many pores. This could be helpful if you wanted the ceramic to be insulate, but otherwise it seems counterproductive. Not sure about grain size.

Sorry but that is really not my cup of tea. I'll stick with the pottery and not ovens and other things. Actually that is really adobe which is somewhat different from pottery and the clay mix is different too.

Thank you, glad I was able to help.
Finding a viable clay in the wild is a thrill. Thanks for the adventure and the education
you're welcome
cant wait for the processing of each clay and firing ..i want to see the color each clay will fire to.

Thanks Wes, glad you enjoyed it

Yes, a lot of work goes into a video like this. Thanks!
Love your videos I spin and weave but you are convincing me I need another hobby. Sending warm wishes from NZ 😊
Thanks!
Camping? Sounds fun. Looks like a pretty area.

Alot of stuff to carry
It's only practical if you are collecting clay along the side of the road.
Especially when far from home and you don't want to have to make two trips.
Love this channel!!
Thank you so much.
Wow awesome video Andy 👍 I've learned so much from watching your videos thank you sir
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it.

Oklahoma has a lot of great clay.

@@mattparker9726 have you seen the Townsend video about brick making? ua-cam.com/video/mzJoImT__xc/v-deo.htmlsi=x_Cg0g9uN-SGyyXz
@@AncientPottery yes I have but it has been a while. I will rewatch it.
You should have pocketed the pull tab.
@@EmilyGOODEN0UGH it’s historic, probably over 50 years old
I think I just reached the point where I've seen it all... hunting for different types of clay... that's gotta be the end of the road.
What a great video.....just love your commentary.....going to re listen and take notes......Thanks Andy
Thanks Allen, glad you liked it.

No I haven't tried it yet. I hope to make a test pot soon with all the yellows I collected on this trip so they can be compared side by side. Thanks!

There has to be good clay in the UK, otherwise what were those Anglo Saxon potters using. Thanks
Grind up the moqui marbles for the bright orange color.
All the moqui marbles I have tried make a very dark color, not bright enough. Maybe I am collecting them in the wrong area.

@@tbabbittt That sounds cool. Would love to collect a few to test out, can you mail me a few? My mailing address is in the dooblidoo.
@AncientPottery no, I would have to walk over 10 miles to mail something. I only go into town once every three months or so.
Andy i missed you at the kiln conference. I so wanna meet you....your cibola fan🤟
How did you miss me? I was there at every event on every day.
@AncientPottery i missed you by not being able to make it. I'm sure you were there every day....your reply kind of hit me as snoody?

Oof! Sunburn and a blister. I am glad that your hat brim is so wide. Do you wear sunscreen?
I don't usually use sunscreen, I should have on this day
👍
I found green clay that turned orange red. That could be the origin of the orange
Maybe, was it in that area on the Mogollon Rim?

Pueblo and potsherds. Lost history. Unfortunate. At least you are keeping part of the technology alive.
