Anyone who bought an Xbox this gen deserves to feel depressed and be forever clowned. Xbox brand has been factual, worthless trash since 2010. Ppl who support Msoft in gaming only do so cause they're as heinous and prejudiced as Msoft.
All Xbox fans and pretend Xbox fans tell the same lies or misinfo. Like how Matty recently said Sony uses Msoft trash Azure servers for their game streaming. Tho PS Streaming factually is superior in graphics and performance. Xbox fans love being wrong.
@@east00 To be fair, PlayStation does use Azure. There is a publicly documented relationship between Microsoft and Sony, it's not some conspiracy that Matty is creating. One of the laughable frustrations of Xbox is they utilise their own technology in a worse way than the competition. Both things can be true, but given how fanboyish your reply reads, I'm guessing you wouldn't care about the reality of the situation anyway. Xbox bad Xbox bad! Upvote!
@BenHDR no they hell they don't. If they did I wouldn't have mention Matty being wrong. It even came out in court with the ABK acquisition that Sony never used Azire. Why you think PS Streaming is far superior to Xcloud. Sony was using their Gaikai servers and now they're currently using Amazon's. Amazon runs PSN too. It was just a memorandum to possibly use Azure in the future from 2019. That will never happen now.
@@rocketboy1674 I don’t get this harping on about Concord. Game was a dud, big deal, no one played it and was refunded in weeks. Is the reason so many are focused on it is because Sony rarely has a miss or they just enjoy flogging a dead horse? It doesn’t detract from wins unless you’re a shareholder.
At this point Defining Duke should just become a PC/general podcast if Matty got less than 100 hours on his Xbox. I play primarily on PS5 as a trophy hunter and I got more hours on Xbox than him cause of Starfield and my replay of Fable 1-3.
Matty mentioned a month or so back that Defining Duke was moving more toward a generalised gaming podcast, just one that would feature the goings-on of Xbox and Microsoft a bit more than what you'd usually find elsewhere. They said they want to avoid skipping over talking about PlayStation and Nintendo exclusives just because it'll piss off the fanboys in the audience Colin discussed on one of the crossover episodes how Defining Duke would still stick around if Xbox went multi-platform, as long as there was some kind of ecosystem and hardware to talk about. I think they know interest in the brand is dying out though. Matty's mention the other day of how him and Cog know this podcast isn't going to last forever suggests to me they at least have it in the back of their minds
"I can start Final Fantasy 2 on my phone and then transfer the save over to my PC. Xbox has such a bright future!" Dawg. People aren't actually doing this. 99.999% of players just want to play their game on one device. They're either on their Xbox or they're on their PC. They have a dedicated space for the hobby and they like it that way. Xbox is looking at Candy Crush numbers (and Korea/Japan culture) and thinking that people wanna play Elden Ring 2 on mobile and refrigerators, but that's just not reality. Xbox will bet its entire brand on this and the rug will be pulled out from under them when they learn that "WOW! People just wanna buy a video game and play it on their console?"
Also who is buying multiple copies of a game. I understand Microsoft gives a PC / Xbox digital purchases through the windows store but that’s not the case with steam / epic / ps5 and switch etc.
This has somehow turned into the worst xbox gen which is an absolute achievement considering last gen and how long they spent building this one up. This year has been garbage for them.
This year has certainly had it's lows (Losing Tango) but it's had some very high highs. Overall the Gen has been far better than the Xbox One, and is only set to get much better.
@@MasterJazz09How has it not. Their releases are either broken or very underwhelming (apart from Forza and a couple of smaller titles), multiple studio closures, constant changing of messaging/procedures since this gen started because they aren't doing well.... so tell me how they aren't without just pointing it down to being fanboys.
Cogg over emphasizing Steam Cross save support. The .majority of steam users aren't gonna play on Xbox because of achievement's...again putting the cart before the horse. What will happen (imo) is if people get introduced to steam they won't leave that market for Xbox .
Also if you're getting a steam deck you probably have a decent understanding of computers and can switch from Steam OS to Windows if you want a smooth pc gamepass experience, or just do your own thing on the deck etc
Exactly, I've gone full PC and haven't played on my Series X since 2022, and have dabbled with Cloud to play the Gears trilogy. I get everything on Steam; Xbox games, PC games (obviously), and Playtstation games. What the hell does Xbox Live/Xbox hardware offer me? Nothing.
Bro how can you say Playstation as a platform had a bad 2024 when it is the only place you can play all 6 GOTY noms? And it's the only console you can play a few of the frontrunners that didn't get nominated like Stellar Blade?
A lot of people get caught up in the Concord discussion because it's easy to make fun of it and whatnot, but I think 2024 on Xbox will have a more lasting effect in the industry than that.
@@acurisurthis is totally incorrect. Even after the actiblizz acquisition, total xbox revenue is still well behind ps. Revenue numbers are the only numbers we can compare unfortunately bc ms refuses to release profit numbers for the xbox division and hasnt for years. Sony does report ps profits.
When you've managed to convince you most ardent fans that the game is up and dont even seem to fully grasp why, its difficult to say you've had anything but a disaster of a year... 🙄
Not sure why everyone is so concerned with Xbox ceasing to exist, it’s Microsoft. They have basically unlimited money to keep it a float. Xbox as a platform will never go away.
Yes, absolutely. Between the death of Xbox exsclusity, closing Tango Gameworks, and that horrible "This is an Xbox" ad campaign, I don't how you could come to any other other conclusion. Xbox's condition is terminal, it's only a matter of time before they stop producing consoles and close/absorb every studio whose games don't sell at least five million copies.
@@alexlyster3459Tango was slated for closure by Microsoft, everyone employed there was informed of the pending closure. The Krafton situation happened after Microsoft had already committed to closing the studio.

Love ya cog, but you’re wrong homie. It is boycott time in this house. I will no longer be financially supporting Xbox/microsoft gaming. Game pass, new titles, any of it. They spit in the face of the loyal and I refuse to continue to give my money to those people.
@@superbadisfunny seriously bruh. This fanboism for consoles is ridicoulous and dumb. I am paying for Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and I love that I can game on my Series X, My Ipad with Cloud Gaming, and even on my PC. It's amazing I can game anywhere and almost all my favorite games are free with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. I think Microsoft/Xbox is moving in an incredible direction. They don't need to stick to a single console. And if Xbox Game Pass Ultimate ever makes it to Nintendo or Playstation that's even better for Microsoft.
It’s not that serious. At the end of the day, good games are all that matters. If Xbox puts out quality titles, I can live with their other business decisions.
Xbox certainly have put on the best shows as of late, but they’re just showing you things. When it comes to delivering, Xbox are pretty inarguably still in last place out of the big three. More game launches than not are plagued by poor performance, technical issues, or generally underwhelming most players. Showing is great, but it means nothing if when it comes to serving the meal it’s half rotten and stone cold
And this is an example where there’s no nuance in this topic. It feels like it got to the point that it doesn’t matter if Xbox’s games land in the 80’s, if it’s not a zeitgeist then it doesn’t matter. I’m not saying they’re beyond criticism but I see people are much harsher on Xbox than on other platforms.
@ I don’t necessarily disagree. But there are realities where if something isn’t in the zeitgeist, less people know about it, meaning less people buy and/or play it, meaning less of the games get made. It’s a trickling snowball effect that puts the pressure on Xbox titles (who are the last place “underdog” of the big 3) to deliver experiences that people can’t ignore. And they’ve largely failed to do that for a generation and a half. I love a fair amount of the stuff they put out, but they do need to deliver an unbridled success that isn’t something they’ve just bought and claimed ownership of ie COD or Doom. New IP or exceptional returns ie Fable or Perfect Dark are their greatest chances, so I’m optimistic. But as per my initial comment, the proof is still very much going to be in the pudding.
They released more than 6 small and AAA games this year. All are rated above 80 on MC. And best of all, they didn't shut down a $400 million game within 2 weeks.
@ Good for them! Guess we can be relieved that Xbox didn’t lay off 1900+ workers to kick off the year, go further by cleaving Bethesda literally in half by closing 4 studios, release multiple high profile games and DLC’s in unfinished broken states or generally underwhelming players, hike prices of GamePass and actively strip benefits from users unless they are on Ultimate, have the worst back and forth contradicting messaging and marketing faux pars, miss out on having any major third party exclusives essentially the entire year, and completely decimate their good will and trust with the existing community by diluting the brand. Thank god!
The host of the xbox podcast only has 74 hours on the console. Just like when the sacred symbol guys shared theirs. How are these guys on platform dedicated podcasts. This is literally just for the money.
@@tji7046yeah Matty is gamepass on pc and same with Chris on sacred doing sony titles on steam deck and occasionally goes to PS5 for exclusives he's interested in.
Colin plays exclusively on PlayStation to the point of delusional fanboyism, I'd argue he's more than qualified to host Sacred Symbols. Chris and Dustin both play a fair amount on PC, and Dustin (being on Knock Back) does a fair amount of Nintendo gaming as well
I’m pretty sure Matty likes Trophies so most 3rd party games he’s playing on PS5 and just exclusives on the Xbox. He loves a lot of Xbox’s first party studios and can play the neutral guy so I’m cool with him on the pod. Cog is your majority of the time on Xbox over 1000 hours a year and knows all the issues and great features that come with regularly playing on the Xbox.
Actually (and sadly) it’s common knowledge. These „Xbox” bros play on PC or PS5. Sometimes they’ll play on the Xbox to show off and get some clicks. It’s just business for them. Matty is very honest with that, kudos for him. Still, it’s not how it suppose to be.
Yup appreciate the honesty but we all know Xbox tax exist & most media don't play on Xbox but even Xbox podcasters don't play on it is weird @@wieczornyPyton
Matty has been very open about being a frustrated Xbox fan that would play on the platform more if Microsoft actually bothered to improve it. Lack of physical game support, lack of any substantial improvements to the controller, lack of true exclusives, lack of a Platinum Trophy equivalent (which is why he chooses to play third-party games on PlayStation), etc.
I am so sad with Xbox... It was my favourite console (Switch replaced it now), but they since 360 screwed up big time. The Microsoft management clearly are bean counters and don't get gaming. For me the Steam access on Xbox, or at the very least all the indie games come over to be on xbox would win me over. But right now PC seems the only place to be these days.
If you decide to make previously exclusive products available to sell on competitors hardware you have by default had an aweful year. 2024 was the year Xbox admitted to everyone that Microsoft does not have the same confidence in the brand as Sony has in Playstation. If Xbox was having a good year, or a good generation, they would never have uttered the idea of going multi platform. They are doing it because there is no other choice. The brand is dying.
I don't know how anyone can spin making the Xbox console entirely redundant, and killing next-gen before it begins, a good thing. Also, the plan for Xbox to compete with Steam is a fool's errand.
Considering Matty runs 3 UA-cam channels (2 of which cover multi-platform games), hosts Defining Duke and features on multiple LSM podcasts, I don't think it's egregious for his playtime to be that low on one console, especially when he's been open about how frustrated and disapointed he's been as a long-time Xbox player
Why? You have to pay to play it on PS5, on Xbox it's part of Game Pass. The Series X version was fantastic, a constant locked 60fps at 4k with ray tracing. What Matty probably means is he wants to compare the PS5 version to the Series X version, but I doubt they'll be any PS5 Pro enhancements.
Your comment is incredibly misleading though lol... He's not waiting to play the game at all... he played and beat the game, has a review of the game on his channel, and have spoken about the game and shared his thoughts several times on this very show, nevermind that he literally did so during this very episode. He also didn't actually say he was going to get the PS5 copy, definitively. He clearly stated that he is a big physical game kinda guy, which yes, he is at odds with the Xbox Ecosystem for this very reason. He then said it would largely be due to assuming that the physical copy on the PS5 would have the entirety of the game on the the actual disk which is not confirmed or even a guarantee as there are PS5 games out in the wild that do not include the complete game on physical copies.
I made the switch last year and have no regrets. Kept the Series X around because of the library I built up but to be honest, I've rebought a lot in sales to play them on PC anyways. The only reason I'd get an Xbox next gen is if they have Steam on there and backwards compatibility
Sony talks about things that will come out soon, Xbox reveals what they are working on way to early. I personally don’t care to know what Sony, NES, or Xbox is working on 5 years ahead of a release date. People been knowing about perfect dark and fable for a few years yet those games dont even have release dates. We literally just found out about Ghost of Yotei and it comes out next year. If Ghost of Yotei sucks, atleast we didn’t have to wait 5 years and hype it up to be let down. Look at Starfield, people like it but it was underwhelming to most and hyped up way too much.
@ Exactly, that’s what I push back against Cog. I don’t really care to know what these studios are cooking way ahead of time. 9 times out of 10, it doesn’t bold well for the game. Look at Starfield, that game was hyped up to be the game of the gen due to it being hyped up for years before the release date was even really known.
Not any more they don't. Most of what they've shown off last year came out that year or will come out in 2025. They were showing stuff off too early in the last because they had nothing else to show, and because they needed to hire staff for certain projects like Fable (hard to make an RPG with staff looking to make Racing Games.) Now? They can afford to wait and show stuff off much closer to release. Like Doom, Indiana Jones, Age of Mythology etc... all of which are coming out within 6-12 months of being shown. I know technically Indi was announced years ago, but that was to get ahead of leaks
I think it's refreshing for Astro Bot to be announced 2 months before release and win GOTY but you can't please everyone. It's dumb but some people moan when you don't give them a 3-5 year hype cycle. Sony not showing their games three E3's in a row and presenting a roadmap (e.g. E3 2016) announcing everything very early like they did for PS4 has actually annoyed a lot of people. There's been a lot of screaming that they don't know what each team is working on - they were used to the old format/roadmap. The Weapon Wheel Podcast has been like that for the last few years. Announcing the first game early also made people not notice that it had a very long development cycle compared to PS3 games (6 years between inFamous First Light to Ghost Of Tsushima).
I'm too old for midnight releases anymore but man do I have some great memories. Where I am there was a guy that would always show up dressed like Braveheart... no matter the game
9:16 same bro, same. I got a nice pc now and play 90% of everything on it through steam and pc gamepass. I only use my xbox to replay elden ring and cyberpunk occasionally lol
Microsoft/Xbox is a Business. A Business is in the industry of Making Money. Microsoft doesn't care where you are playing your games. As long as you are paying for their services or buying the games they don't care if you are playing on a xbox, a pc, your phone, a smart tv, a playstation; it just doesn't matter. They aren't crying if you aren't buying or playing on a xbox console. They can still sell consoles for people who don't have fast internet for cloud gaming or want to spend tons of money on a good pc. But to them it doesn't matter. They just want you to pay for game pass either that be Game Pass Core, Game Pass PC, or Game Pass Ultimate, or buy their games outright on any platform. Also, you don't need to see physical games at a store to sell a console. Physical Media is dying. Everything is going digital and online in the future and Microsoft/Xbox is getting that head start.
"social media isn't real life it's just noise" - Concord, Star Wars Outlaws, Dragon Age and their performance beg to differ... it obviously isn't just noise (even if a lot of it is).
@@ronmexico7256 I never claimed direct causation? "noise" implies that there is nothing significant about it, but I don't think you can claim that anymore. Many of these projects (including movies/shows) that had a lot of negative "noise" surrounding them also performed poorly. Pretending it is "just noise" nowadays is just burying your head in the sand and ignoring the data surrounding these projects not doing well.
@@Epiousios18 You are implying direct causation between social media and the performance of these games. If it’s not direct then who/what is the mediating event between these factors? I’m not saying you’re wrong, I just want to see the information that this is based on.
@@ronmexico7256 I'm not implying that at all.. I am implying a correlation that is very obvious now. The "negative noise" surrounds those games/projects and many of them are now performing poorly as well. This is pretty basic stuff.
@@Epiousios18 My bad I guess? I had assumed you were implying that the social media outrage was having a direct impact on the consumers decision to purchase media. Again, I was never saying you were wrong, I just wanted to see the information you were looking at.
Going multiplat makes sense if they don't have a console. It makes business sense but if they have a console being multiplayer makes no sense. That's why I think they don't want the console
I liked the talk of baseball at the start, but I think it was a bit. I don’t know how to say this, but irresponsible to point out how Xbox could hopefully make a move like the Mets. Some big franchise alter removed that turns things around. Maybe it was a lighthearted joke, but some people will think that that’s seriously possible. This isn’t a team that competes against multiple other teams on a yearly basis starting at zero each year instead this is a brand a company competing in an industry that has records and reputations and franchisees and such. No one miraculous move, can change the fate of Xbox at least not the move we might think of. Microsoft has made it move most gamers don’t like it, but it is the one move that flips everything on its head. They subtly announced their pretty much going hybrid. 1st party and 3rd party. In fact, I think that’s the best way it should be described. They are a hybrid publisher. You can play an Xbox anywhere, but we make our own platform. We have our own service for our community. It is the one move that they hope will up and the gaming market as we know it because the problem for Microsoft for Xbox is the gaming market itself. It’s the fact that the market in gaming has not grown in the past 20 years. For whatever reason I won’t dive into it each generation once we tally up all the totals the numbers are the same for platforms sold. Across all 1st developers. That’s right they already expect that this generation will be the same as last generation will be the same as the PS3 generation which will be the same as the PS2 generation. If you don’t have any new customers to sell games too, and your competition has taken 65% of the market and they won’t be leaving the competition at all. You need to do something different to grow the market to reach the masses. You have to meet them where they are. You can’t say leave your PlayStation come buy an Xbox instead you need to say you know what if you’re on a PlayStation give me $70. You can play a great video game.
Here's a question for the guys and Xbox players. If you could delete the ABK purchase and make it so the deal never happened would you, do it or keep the deal even with what's happened since?
As a fan, I'd delete it in an instant. While great for Microsoft's shareholders, it dealt a death blow to the Xbox brand which felt like it was on the cusp of recovery, at least in terms of building goodwill among the fanbase long-term. Heck, I'd go back and delete Game Pass. It's insane that we have a console leader convinced that good games don't sell consoles.
If it wasn't for Indiana Jones, which probably didn't do very well because it came out at a crowded time, this would have been a completely disaster of a year.

It's funny y'all mention the Switch thing with Xbox x Nintendo because I just watched that Patreon episode a few hours ago. It would've been cool for sure, I think I'd like to see Xbox co-develop games with more companies though, like what they did with Capcom and Path of the Goddess. I would love them to cooperate with SEGA/Atlus and make a spinoff SMT game like Devil Saga given their close relationship. I just can't imagine them doing much because of how expensive it may be and how badly Path of the Goddess performed if they even want to try co-making a game ever again. It could be such a cool idea though, instead of spending hundreds of millions on exclusives what if they helped fund games with other corps, Capcom, SEGA, Atlus, Vanillaware, and Larian, maybe try and get EA to do something more interesting for Gamepass like a 20hr RPG, hell reach out to some indie studios that were started by legends like Mistwalker and get a standalone title funded like Fantasian which is what Apple did for an exclusive on their Apple Arcade mobile gamepass. Idk man they have a ton of potential with the market they've created but I don't know if they'll ever do something as cool as co-fund Path of the Goddess ever again.
1:05:45 #DD2024 Thank you @LordCognito for keeping me cheesing with the physically humorous, non-verbal discourse you perform 😂😂😂 The Bronx energy always keeps me ctfu 🤣 Hope y’all had a good holiday, appreciate you guys banking this episode ahead of time!
Console exclusives are just bad for the video game industry. Imagine if sony music could only be played on a sony walkman, or if sony movies could only be accessed on a sony blue ray player. It makes no sense in a mature industry. When music and film started it was based much more around proprietary distribution methods, now we can access them everywhere. Video games just need to get past the growing pains.
Instead we now have shows exclusives to Xbox, or Max, or Prime, or AppleTV, or Hulu, or Peacock etc. etc. etc. Turns out, if companies want people to use their service, they need a reason to get them there instead of everyone only using one. That means these companies have to invest more into new content, which is good for consumers. They can't jack up prices sky high, because people will cancel and go elsewhere, also good for consumers. Being against exclusives means you're against your own wallet.
Thanks Cog for deflating this social issue is such a wedge thing, Matty does too when it comes down to the metaphor discussion. It's such a more prevalent discussion for "content"
I wish Cog and Matty would see the comments here because one thing I want them to cover is the whole Steam OS thing that happened with there being labels for steam os being on third party hardware, maybe for the Xbox handheld?
I believe the next episode or two (like this one) were pre-recorded a week or two ago. Same goes for most of the podcasts on LSM. The hosts are all on Christmas break right now, I believe Matty and Cog will be back recording on a weekly basis in mid-January
This year wasnt a disaster for nobody. It just wasn't that good. Couple of hits couple of flops. Even out. Xbox, playstation and Nintendo will have a good if not great 2025. Fanboys from all sides need to chill in 2025. Ya'll toxicated 2023 2024 and enough is enough. The fake outcrys the fake cancelations. Grow up or gtfo!
I wouldnt mind a future in which you had your playstation console at home hooked up to the TV playing all digitally games (lets face it, ps6 isnt gonna have a disc player- unless its an add on option to play your old ps4/ps5 games on it) and a xbox handheld console with gamepass on it. Thats the only way for microsoft to get me back, a handheld with gamepass. Because right now, Nintendo switch offer their exclusives+ GB,GBA,NES,SNES and N64 games on them- and I pretty much assume either NDS or GC games will also be on it.
I know that it's technically a win, but when they went multi-plat, I decided I wasn't getting a Series console. So, that's my part. I was excited for Avowed, The Outer Worlds 2, Indy, Doom, Perfect Dark, etc, and I still am. I just am an old, so I like me a real console war. If the rumors are true, with XBOX and Sony making portables/hybrid consoles, they'll be competing directly with Nintendo for the first time since the Gamecube. I hope that's how it goes down. THAT is way more interesting than the current generation. Also, Matty, no. If I saw "Only on XBOX" on a Playstation or PC game, my brain would melt.
We put the cloud out there as gamers we still have this idea that there is this war that Xbox can win the war is over. Everybody knows the war is over and I do mean everybody, Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft they all know the war is over. Everybody is trying to figure out how to make money in the current environment. Sony has said you know what we will be the high end console seller. Nintendo has said we’re just going to be Nintendo. We don’t have to be super fancy you want to play what we make and we will re-release anything to you and sell it to you full price. In fact, Nintendo has said our games are to be treasured they do not cut prices on their games at all. They said a standard saying $45 that’s about as cheap as it’s gonna get. If you are planning on buying any of our games for $30 or less, you better buy it used from someone else. Notice you’ll see a big name Sony franchise $20 eventually in store you never see that with Nintendo. Mario kart eight how old is that game? Guess what it’s still selling for over $40. Breathe if the Wild go look up how much it cost right now it’s over $35. Xbox has to figure out how do they compete in this environment and they finally said you know what we want to sell our games to anybody on any platform as long as they make the money who cares they took it a step further and said you know what if you’re going to play our games on any platform maybe we can offer you a service to access our games. That’s the slick move. That’s the invasive move. Imagine if your next Nintendo switch came with all of the Xbox games but Microsoft said hey you know you could also just play that on Game Pass. No, no no not on Game Pass on an Xbox open up Game Pass on your Nintendo switch. That’s the game plan long-term. They want to become such a big publisher in the third-party realm of things that they can dictate to the first party publishers, certain terms, and conditions they can put a little bit of weight they can flex a little bit of muscle. That’s what they want to be able to do and they have enough money to literally acquire studios to do so.
At 1:29:50when Cog is talking agout how the devs are lashing out because its uninformed not how the game actually is. The 2 biggest controversies ive seen that isnt true vanguard was full of preachy transgender issues and removed the choice to disagree as well as avowed the devs group chat leaked where they even said they put the pronouns in just to piss off elon musk and the people who think like him. I agree a lot of this is grifting but theres also just a huge genuine rift between what the average gamer wants and what the devs want
Episode 162 of Duke was the first episode to introduce me this show. It was a bit of a reintroduction to Matty as I was already subbed to his channels but hadn’t tuned in for a bit. Fast forward till now I’ve got all of LSM, The Iron Lords, and Snark Tank in my weekly rotation of pods. Hella grateful for the Dukes to starting me on this journey and I’m looking forward to 2025!
Guys need to start thinking about xbox as an "App".. the app is available on local hardware like PCs and Xboxs and you can also find it on your phone. Thats literally it, there are xbox games... Theres no "xbox console games"
Cog still in denial, still negotiating the terms 😂 Matty with the “more third party exclusives” remember when these were anti consumer? 😂 cog “xbox future everywhere I’m in” 😂 yeah Xbox future is being EA
The community is thinking like it’s 1999 not like it’s 2024. This is not that market where it was one big first party publisher versus another one mascot versus another fighting for your dollars that is not the market. We are in now gamers. I know we the hard-core that might be what we see But guess what the real world is totally different. The heavy hitters of video gaming online multiplayer services. They make way more money than the 1st party published content. They make so much more money than anything Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo makes that any one of those companies would kill for a game like that. They would kill for a game that does 10% of what some of the biggest games out there do. We might not play those games but they do exist and as a result, the market is different. We don’t want to admit it. We want to close our eyes to that fact and say no Sony you and Microsoft go do it out but that’s not what the money says. The money says something totally different so much so that Sony and Microsoft know it. We just are the only ones that don’t recognize it. There’s a reason why Sony said we’re going into live services and we are going hard into life Services. It’s because that’s where the money is. It is literally where the money is being spent. Not only to develop content, but in purchasing content. You get way more return on investment with multiplayer online live service games, then first party single player content. We want single player content, but guess what it doesn’t make money not like they need to. It cost money to make, but on that return it’s that multiplayer service content that brings home the bacon. Thick juicy fatty bacon full of grease dripping with profit. There’s a reason Microsoft said we can’t do this anymore. It’s because it wouldn’t have been profitable. We as gamers don’t want to recognize that Microsoft isn’t just here to make games. They’re here to make money and you the gaming community. We’re not spending your money on their platform so they said we have to go to another platform. We have to meet them where they are.
Ever since i got interested in playing older games ive started loving xbox these past few years again. Playing older games i never got to and new games i have accumulated a large backlog on xbox. I still dont think putting xbox exclusives on ps is a good idea
I own an Xbox Series X, PC, Nintendo Switch and a Steam Deck (plus all the emulators). My main platform is PC and I have more hours in my Xbox than Matty..........oofff
Love the pod as always, but I do have to say some of Matty's comments early on about dev comments/stating what they're working on and the intentions of their work online came off as very "shut up and develop." Not sure I can agree with the message to devs being "stay quiet and do your work." Seems like stifling creator voices in fear of public backlash, which I can see from a strategy point of view, but seems a little icky.
Cogs argument about gamers not standing on business is inaccurate, mainly because it’s usually the vocal minority who are complaining in the first place! Take hogwards legacy last year as an example, it sold really well but it still had lots of people complaining about it for various reasons and those people I’m sure didn’t buy the game on principle, but those that didn’t care and just wanted to play the game still played it and it’s the same for every game ever, avowed will be the same, there will be some that don’t want to play it because of recent comments and there will be others who won’t let that ruin their own impressions of the game! It’s just unfortunate that the vocal minority are always louder than the rest
Xbox isn't consistent. It's going to take more than Indiana Jones or Hi-Fi rush for them to get that money. They going to have to release those quality level games continuously for years in order to see profit or change in their market. They want things too fast investors want to invest but think it's going to happen in a second. It's going to take them years. If they had all these games exclusive until the next gen started next gen they will see a change. They want to change too fast without putting in the long-term work
They had their best showcase this year but in real time the worst year of actual gamepass drops since the service got big the cod tax was crazy didn’t get anything till Indy stalker basically. they started the year strong with some jrpg but dang, used to keep up with the weekly monthly announcements but it’s now flooded with “gamepass core” and when I see core first thing I think of is recycled gamepass ultimate game getting remarketed and bloat
Microsofts saving grace in 2025-26 will be their SteamOS integration. If they don’t go that route they are cooked. This coming from someone who clocked 1600 hours on Xbox in 2024.
Great Xbox discussion couldn’t have said it any better, Xbox lost its way as with all the constant mix messaging and now Microsoft is getting in the way.
I wouldn't be surprised if they break the ice on something like Halo next year. Porting Infinite multiplayer to Switch 2 or PS5 would be a good way to start the change without making people too mad.
I would say that 2024 was definitely not a disaster and the only folks who are saying that it is are the fanboys, so called gaming insiders and games journalists who have little to no credibility and have no clue as to how the business side of the videogames industry works.

@@east00 To be fair, PlayStation does use Azure. There is a publicly documented relationship between Microsoft and Sony, it's not some conspiracy that Matty is creating. @BenHDR no they hell they don't. If they did I wouldn't have mention Matty being wrong. It even came out in court with the ABK acquisition that Sony never used Azire. Its mostly a Xbox/pc pod because cog is only Xbox, so were already doing that nothing changes
Matty mentioned a month or so back that Defining Duke was moving more toward a generalised gaming podcast, just one that would feature the goings-on of Xbox and Microsoft a bit more than what you'd usually find elsewhere. They said they want to avoid skipping over talking about PlayStation and Nintendo exclusives just because it'll piss off the fanboys in the audience
Colin discussed on one of the crossover episodes how Defining Duke would still stick around if Xbox went multi-platform, as long as there was some kind of ecosystem and hardware to talk about.

He also didn't actually say he was going to get the PS5 copy, definitively.
He clearly stated that he is a big physical game kinda guy, which yes, he is at odds with the Xbox Ecosystem for this very reason.
The 5 year hype cycle for games must stop. I dont want to know about a game until its at most 1 year away
They were showing stuff off too early in the last because they had nothing else to show, and because they needed to hire staff for certain projects like Fable (hard to make an RPG with staff looking to make Racing Games.)
Now? They can afford to wait and show stuff off much closer to release. Like Doom, Indiana Jones, Age of Mythology etc... all of which are coming out within 6-12 months of being shown. I know technically Indi was announced years ago, but that was to get ahead of leaks
@ we’ll see
I think it's refreshing for Astro Bot to be announced 2 months before release and win GOTY but you can't please everyone.

@@PuNiShEdSiciliangamer agreed

Great episode lads, happy holidays 💪
Why is collecting on Xbox pointless? Physical copies will still be playable forever (until they're destroyed or lost).
Worry not, Matty, we old boys know you and other „Xbox” content creators play on PC, really.
The hosts are all on Christmas break right now, I believe Matty and Cog will be back recording on a weekly basis in mid-January
the dukes always asking the obvious questions lol 💀
This year wasnt a disaster for nobody. It just wasn't that good. Couple of hits couple of flops. Even out. Xbox, playstation and Nintendo will have a good if not great 2025.
Fanboys from all sides need to chill in 2025.
Ya'll toxicated 2023 2024 and enough is enough. The fake outcrys the fake cancelations. Grow up or gtfo!
Your comment just pacified the console war and insincere fanboy outrage on the internet. Next year will be pleasant thanks to you.
I dont think Ive ever regretted a console purchase more than the series x
Yeah, mine is collecting dust. The 360 was peak Xbox, glad I got to experience it.
It's even more abstract than that going by what Phil has said. It's like a concept now.
You mean come back to Cyrodiil Matty
Mate fable needs to be Exclusive
Sigh, it won't be
Xbox isn't consistent.
Excellent episode.
good damn you guys cant get any views so we need a catchy tittle.. LoL
Lol no one remembers the disaster of flintlock this year as well from Xbox
Buying physical Indiana jones on PS5 when vs buying Indiana jones on Xbox and get dual entitlement on PC... Ehhh I think Xbox is the better version.
It wouldnt be a disaster, if they dont put their games on playstation
Xbox will only sell a lot of hardware if they drop that Native Handheld in 2026. 💚
If Sony releases their Native Handheld before XBox, it’s over. 💙
