Hello Dennis..my buddy has a penn fathom 2 15 level wind that’s not working Correctly. Plastic gears seem fine, pawl has both “teeth” still intact. Does have a hang up point when spinning the gear for the worm drive. He said it happened when his thumb got caught in the levelwind and it crushed his finger. Possibly needs entire new worm gear?
The track of the worm gear may be bent or damaged if the other parts check out (did you check the drive on the back of the spool? ). You didn't say how he freed his injured thumb, but if he wrenched the line guide, it is possible that the track of the worm gear was damaged. You can usually see that type of damage if you inspect the worm gear - Dennis
Hi, Dennis great videos.... I have a problem with my Penn Fathom 15, when I tighten the star it jumps out of the threads, a just spins around..... Can you tell me what might be the problem.
Hey looking for some help. Been trying to trouble shoot and find a video on the penn fathom nld2 40 2 speed... once I engage more then 10lbs of drag the freespool is completely gone. All bearings changed switch out the cam . The reel is new but can't take it back because it was on clearance and final sale. I never had issues with any of the fathom line except this one
You can't take the reel back, but it should still be covered by the Penn 1 year warranty. I would send it back to Penn. Warranty Information is available on the Penn Reels website. That is the part that is designed as a failsafe as it will break rather that ruin the whole reel. The idler gear failure is common when folks try to reel out of a snag. The metal worm gear will spread the plastic idler gear when it is over torqued
Hi Dennis...very informative video. I have a Fathom 2 levelwind that I serviced using your video. The main reason for the service was to loosen up the free spool which I did by freeing up the pinion gear that bonded with the spool rod. The free spool works great until I put the side cover back on, then it tightens up again. Common sense tells me to keep the side covers loose enough to not add unnecessary pressure to the spool rod. This won't work, the side cover screws need to be tight enough to stay screwed in. They fall out when the free spool is at the correct tension. I've been at this for 4 hours now with the same result. Can you help me? I don't want to give up and send it in to Penn for repair. Especially after dedicating so much time into it already. The spool won't free spool....@808Kapuna
There has to be something binding inside. You need to go to the schematic and make sure that the parts are installed in the correct sequence and position. Sorry to hear of your issue -. Dennis
I wonder too. There were two reels and both of them were equally broken with the same issue. Not sure what caused it, but cutting the line would have been a better alternative - Dennis
This was a fascinating video.
Thanks Chris -Be well

Sounds like the gear sleeve needs to be replaced because of cross stripped threads - Dennis
Thanks, I'll have the reel check out
good looking reel
It is, but I've seen several now that have come in broken. Not sure if they are holding up to the rigors of the deep - Dennis

Had the same problem with a Squall 20. Idler was toothless.

I bet even after causing all this damage , they still lost their tackle. It's like stepping over a dollar to save a nickel
