- Finally... BMW have launched their first FWD hot hatch! The 128ti has now been introduced into their line up, and also the return of the ti model after well over a decade.
Stats include a 0-60 in 6.1 seconds, 400nm of torque, 261hp and a completely redeveloped chassis. BMW have smashed it with this FWD hot hatch, I was thoroughly impressed with this 128ti.

@@njt937 it’s a dream. Fun ride that’s fast, comfortable and stunning. My dealer has offered me loads of money for it though so I have just ordered a M135i which I’m nervous about as the 128ti is so much fun but they assured me the M135i will not disappoint.

I got rid of as much red as I could to be honest as I really don’t like the colour red ha ha .. I’d been looking for a new car for ages but couldn’t find anything that compared to my Golf GTD value for money until I read about the TI. Had quite a few golfs and VW’s but needed a change due to my disappointment with the new Mk 8 Golf. Hopefully I’ve made a good choice here. Looks like a fun car to drive watching your video

I have ordered a 128ti for delivery in late June. Kind of a leap of faith when I saw some good lease deals. I have a mk 7.5 Golf GTI Performance currently, and expect the 128ti to be similar in many ways, but with a way better interior (I have sat in a 128ti, just not driven it). Your review makes me think I made the right decision. It’s odd there are so few reviews online so far of this car. I guess the press cars have not made their way into the hands of the mainstream motoring press yet?
after i assume 2 years of ownership what are your impressions?
@@pietroferrari4279 overall I have been very happy with my 128ti, after almost 2.5 years of driving. The car is definitely more refined than the Golf GTI, for the most part. The ride is slightly firmer, but the suspension doesn't crash and bang in potholes as the Golf did. The engine maybe does not rev as freely as the Golf's, but nor is it as rough sounding under high load. The auto gearbox is ok, but not as fast changing at the VW DSG. It lacks a couple of features I liked on the Golf, such as adaptive cruise control and the ability to switch driving modes using the gear shifter instead of a harder to find button. However, the interior, including the seats, are of far higher quality. The front end is sharper thanks to the mechanical limited slip differential compared to the electronic one in the Golf. The car corners more flatly, and has better grip and traction, as long as you have the right tires on it (e.g. Michelins or Continentals). It came on Pirellis which had poor traction, were noisy and hard and caused terrible torque steer. That's all cured now I am on Continentals. So, yes, it's an improvement on the Golf. But, it would be better still with an 8 speed DSG, or the 8 speed ZF torque converter box on more expensive BMWs, instead of the cheaper Aisin torque converter box it has.
Anyway, it was no contest against the mk8 Golf, which has that terrible infotainment system, lack of genuine buttons in favour of touchscreens and haptics, and poor quality interior compared to the 128ti.

The only issue I have is, after discounts, there is only about 3 grand or so to the m135i. I will take the m135i anyday.

a 128ti is a golf GTI rival. A m135i has 40lb ft more torque and 45hp more + xdrive. 0-60 in 6.1 secs vs 4.5 seconds has nothing on a m135/ S3/A35 from a standing start or mid range.

Sadly I don’t think the car sounds the best to be honest, that’s why I didn’t include a clip of it. The fake engine noise is all you can really hear, tried to rev and record but didn’t sound worth it - thank you for watching though 🙏🏼
I ordered this motor with the live cockpit pro/tech pack in storm bay a few days ago, funnily enough I was wondering why there was no mention of the Harman Kardon pack when I was going through the spec on Carwow.
As it was hardly a deal breaker I forgot to ask the salesman about it when going through everything on the phone, yours is actually the first review I’ve watched that’s mentioned it comes as part of the pro pack so fair play, you’ve got a new sub for that alone!

What a colour 👏🏼 my current car is storm bay with the black grilles and sun pro and looks incredible so I’m sure against the red accents yours will look even better (if you chose to keep them on that is). When is your new car coming? I know that there is some issues with HK in the BMW factory so maybe that’s why it wasn’t mentioned? I’d just double check with your salesman! Now you've mentioned that about there being problems in the factory with the HK option it makes sense why you can't pick that pro pack individually, from the outset I picked the '128ti Live Cockpit Pro/Tech Pack' and then moved on to colours and other options.
The dealership dropped me a mail the other day saying it looks like the first week of October. When I was fiddling about with the configuration I did initially go with the black accents as I thought they'd suit storm bay better but then the more I looked at it with red the more it swayed me so that's what I've gone with.
I am definitely going to drop the salesman a line about that speaker matter now because I had right read through the order invoice last night and I noticed it had 'deletion of wireless charging' on it, have you heard anything about that at all?
I think that Covid increased the sales of HK sound systems (not just car sales but all their speakers etc) and so it has meant that there is some sort of shortage of parts or something… Please don’t quote me, but that’s what I have heard - which then means we can’t put those speakers in our upcoming cars for the time being.
The deletion of the wireless charging relates to the HK problem I think, as they normally come together - but in all honestly, I think you are better off charging through a USB, less likely to have your phone over heat that way, and you never get charge quickly through the wireless method.
When have you been told that your car should arrive by?
@@gracedavies5716 well matey from the dealership not that far from you (I ain't going to name them in here but they're south of the river) told me it was because of a 'semiconductor shortage'.
He said that was also the reason why my motor won't have the wireless charging inside either. I really ain't happy about this to be honest, if they can't supply what the motor is meant to come with then they should be knocking the price down a bit I reckon.
Apparently the 'Live Cockpit Pro/Tech Pack' model that I have ordered don't include the Pro options which seems a bit of an oxymoron to me.
Even more annoyingly when I asked why I had to pay extra for the sun pro glass he even tried to flog me the 19" wheels for another 600 quid seeing they weren't included as such!
The dealership I ordered it from undercut all the other BMW gaffs by over a grand which is why it was worth me coming all the way down from Lincs when it gets delivered but I have proper got the hump about it all now.
I am from East London/West Essex originally and we still own a couple of properties down there we rent out but part of me wishes I'd have ordered the motor from Soper's now.

As I am not directly in sales I don't know the full reasons as to why we are not able to spec these two items together - I am only going off things I have heard on BMW forums so they may not even be correct, I have also heard about the semiconductor shortage being a reason for this but as I said, I don't know any definite answers as I don't directly sell these cars unfortunately. I am surprised to hear that you were not given more detail of the spec items that you ordered on your car though, ordering a car should be a fun process!

Great review. I have had my eyes on this car and I think it just has the right ingredients for fun and affordability. Quick question if I may? How stiff is the ride? Whilst you were shooting the video, I could see your body feelings the bumps & pot holes through the car seat. Does it get uncomfortable on long journeys? Thanks
Thank you for watching. It is fairly stiff, although I did take this on country roads which are renowned for pot holes/uneven surfaces, but as you saw in the video, I did feel those bumps. I am yet to take this for a long journey so unfortunately I can’t give you a proper opinion on that, however, as soon as BMW are able to, I would suggest opting for a 24 hour test drive to truly experience this car for yourself if you are keen on potentially buying one.

Brilliant video, I do like the look of this car. Got alot of useful info, would be great to have another video detailing more of an interior and infotainment system. A review containing an exhaust comparison of the different driving modes would also be good as well.

Comes across as a very young person's first boy racer tacky kind of car, but not at said type of car price. Red accents and ti logo everywhere just makes it look cheap in my opinion, and having a fake exhaust noise is a deal breaker for me. Thanks for the review.
I understand what you mean. I think it’s marketed at younger audiences, those looking to get into a BMW, but want a bit more power than a 118i - I think with finance these days, people just get themselves into agreements without weighing up the “car for money” factor. Thank you for watching 👍🏼
I ran a Mk7.5 Gti and loved it, however I would most likely go for this over the Mk8. The interior is so much nicer and the rims are far better than any of the new ( awful ) Vw options.
Spec the car without the tacky red exterior, give it dark paint and manual box. Manuals are so well suited for fwd hot hatches.

Good review but if I spec'ed it the same as my M135i there is only a few grand in it and no adaptive suspension and well over 40k to boot but seeing that the VW GTI Mk 8 is dire this should do well.
When you add your own spec options you will see that increase, I completely understand your point. I think this car is a good entry level for those that can’t quite afford the M135i, but still want a sportier car than a 118i. Thank you for watching!

Good video, music a little distracting but plenty of info. FWIW the 120i (available everywhere except the UK, naturally) is very close in performance to the 128ti; 0-60 in 7 sec flat, and can be had in M Sport trim. This new 128ti is slower to any speed than the old 228i from 2013, especially from 0-100 kmh. I suppose shows up the extra dead weight, tech and luxury of this slightly porky cruiser (the 228i was 100kg lighter).

What about stiffness and driving comfort of this 128ti car?
In sport it’s not too stiff, you do feel the bumps from the road but the shocks help absorb quite a lot of it. I’d say that the seats could be more supportive though...

Yes you can turn the fake noise off if you don’t want it which is handy. The suspension is good, the 128 has bespoke M Sport suspension, stiffer modified springs and shock absorbers which combined make the ride very comfortable. The inside filming clips were filmed on country roads which are renowned for potholes, but I overall found the ride softer and more comfortable than the M135i.

Thank you for watching! They’ve now discontinued the 120i model in the UK.
you can only get the 2 series GC with the 178bhp 2litre petrol engine (220i), but doesn't come with steering wheel shift paddles :( It has not been made available for one series, I reckon as they want customers to buy the 128i if they want more power then 118i can offer, which is a bit of a con on UK customers. The 120i is available in Europe (i.e. Germany)

Been a BM fan my whole life, but that new front grill is very controversial. Personally I'd rather be sat in a slightly used F20 M135i/M140i. It's just better tbh.
Yes the grille is controversial, I didn’t like it when it came out but it’s grown on me since. I agree with you, nothing beats a 3.0 litre, 6 cylinder, RWD! Thanks for watching.

How do you rate the performance on the 118i ?
I daily a 118i and the performance is good, for a 1.5 it’s pretty nippy I guess - 0-60 in around 8 seconds. It’s definitely not fast, but it’s a decent car for the bracket that it’s in. Not brilliant on fuel.

@@dlyle2496 I’ve just double checked and unfortunately I can only get my hands on the pre LCI version as the LCI hasn’t been registered yet and is in the showroom still. Will get something sorted with the LCI this year, in the meantime I might take the M5 Comp for a spin and film it
So it's suppose to be a nimble, sporty, for drivers variant of the 1's series and u don't have the choise of a manual transmission and has electric seats ??? What the hell people are thinking of?
Sadly due to the way things are, manuals are few and far between on new models due to emissions. The demand also wasn’t there. I guess people like different things eh! Thanks for watching.

Yes. In my opinion, I think the xdrive takes a lot of the driving thrill away from the car. I like the instant power that the 135i provides but the 128ti wins it for me. Although, you can’t beat the F20 M140s...

However, this did surprise me, I really enjoyed the drive - I would enjoy it more if it of course came in a manual, I think perhaps BMW might be testing the waters with this car. Maybe they will produce a manual version at some point in the future to really compete with the Golf GTI and the Focus ST?

No dramas. The interior is pretty much the same as the 1 Series, just with some red stitching. All the displays in the new 1 series are touch screen...The interior didn’t need much showing but I’m sure there’s another video showing that if you’re interested. Thanks for the dislike 🤣
