Not gonna comment on the flight itself, what surprises me the most is how willing was the Egyptian government to cover it us as a mechanical failure.
It is really no different than the Catholic Church covering up child abuse. Religion makes people do stupid things to protect it.

Bruh, your comment reminded me of the time I was travelling by bus and I went to the bathroom, and just as I was about to sit down and do my business I went flying forward. I felt my soul leaving my body. I thought to myself "Huh, strange". I proceeded to do my stuff and got out of the bathroom. As soon as I stepped out everyone was murmuring "Oh my god, there was someone in the bathroom". I honestly laughed because what else was I supposed to do. When I sat down my sister explained to me that we were about to crash because our driver thought that it would be a great idea to drive in an opposite lane to pass a car, when suddenly he spotted a truck coming at us at full speed so he had to do a crazy maneuver.
And that's the time I almost die while I was using the bathroom.

1- This B767 was shot down by the US Air Force. The F/O did push the nose down trying to avoid missles that were shot at him.
2- At the time when the missles were shot, The pilots were eating and that's why the Captain went to the bathroom to wash his hands. Also the F/O was eating. No one would suicide when eating...
3- After the crash, a German pilot went to the NTSB stating that this day, he was flying above Flight 990 when he spotted "2 small aircrafts" flying behind Flight 990 which he suspected to be Fighter jets and just minutes later he saw a hige explosion far in the same direction and then Flight 990 was off radar.
4- According to the Investigation done by the Egyptian Authorities a few years after the NTSB final report, The F/O pushed the nose down to avoid the missle and indeed he did avoid the first missle! And then he disconnected all of the aircraft systems hoping that he's dissappear off the radar and to not be tracked and shot again and then he pulled up. But the fighter Jets were still able to track him and then shot a second missle which hit the aircraft's tail and caused the airplane to free fall and crash.
5- When the Captain came back from the Restroom, he didn't know that they were avoiding a missle. So he kept pulling up thinking that the aircraft was falling. When the F/O was pushing down to avoid the missle.
6- Also before the Departure, The aircraft was taken for more than 3 hours for maintenance even though the Egyptian crew stated multiple times that the aircraft was completely fine to fly. And just before departure an important US citizen that works for the government was taken off the plane for an unknown reason.
7- The F/O kept saying "i rely on god" because he was scared cuz he's litteraly avoiding missles that were shot at him and his passengers.
8- He cut both engines and raised the spoliers as a way to slow down the aircraft so it doesn't go into overspeed when he's maneuvering with it to avoid the missles.
9- The F/Osent 3 MAYDAY messages to ATC but somehow, no one aswered him back..
10- On board there was 33 Poeple from the Egyptian Special Forces that had just completed their training in the US.
11- The F/O which was accused of suicide was my friend's neighbour and as of what he said, he was a wise, respectful guy. And he also said that he had important papers for his grandaughter because she was sick and she had to do an operation.
12- For some unknow reasons, Egyptian investigators were not allowed inside the investigation room where they listened to the blavk boxes.. which is hella sus.
All this is proof that it was not a suicide and that it was shot maybe mistakenly or maybe even intentionly..

@@yassinhamza05 as an USAF veteran and pilot, this does not make sense to me. If the Air Force intended to destroy a civilian aircraft, there would be an obvious reason for it (such as a 911 type attack with massively more casualties). Also, if the government of the US planned to take out a foreign commercial airliner, why not use the CIA to place a bomb on board? Why would the FO relief pilot try to convince the original FO to give up his position? How can you even suggest he tried to take evasive action when fighter jets are much more nimble? He wouldn’t have stood a chance. In the cases of civilian airliners that were shot down by military aircraft/anti-aircraft missiles, the pilots had no warning and no effective response. Sorry, I know you gave a very lengthy explanation but I just don’t find it plausible.

Some cultures seem to have an absolute refusal to even contemplate suicide as a motive, despite overwhelming evidence. I remember the family of the identified "jumping man" from 9/11 refused to believe it was him because he would never jump just because he was trapped in the middle of a jet fuel inferno. He just wouldn't. Not an option.

Although i have read about his incident, when i watched this video my heart rate began to increase. i cannot begin to imagine the horror for the passengers and crew while this was happening. What a vile and evil act.

One girl was sick during the Fund Raiser, and did not get enough money for the flight and had to stay home. She was the only girl in her High School class the next year.

He wasn't suicidal, this was an act of revenge. He'd very recently been caught behaving inappropriately toward hotel workers and colleagues and had been told that this flight, in particular, would be his last. The man who actually reprimanded the pilot and caused this was a passenger on the plane.

Since most short flights have only 2 flight crew, one of the people who can sit in while a pilot steps out is a stewardess who can be easily overpowered. I'd rather put a strong male passenger in the cockpit than a female stewardess.

exactly. i have recently become addicted to this channel's videos and many accidents have mechanical failure that ofc crew can't predict, or human errors that were not intentional, misunderstanding or miscommunication etc. but it is crazy that even if your plane is working just fine, no hiccups in your routine of flight, no errors on your part or atc or anyone's.....someone could be just emotionally in a dark place and you could crash anyways.

I always think of what the passengers must have been going through with crashes like this. One minute you're in a smooth, uneventful, controlled flight and the next minute you're plunging nose down towards the ocean. I can't even imagine the terror.

Just beyond unimaginable horror. I think with that level of fear, like when you are beaten up everything's in slow motion and it's like your dreaming and detached from your body cus your brain just can't cope with that level of horror or fear.

I love the way this classy channel recreates past aviation disasters and guides us on the path that leads to the highest-level cause of each crash. I’m not a pilot, but I feel like one going through the experience when I watch their videos.

The concept of 'saving face' and being unable to accept that one of your own is responsible for killing all those innocent people is reason for the Egyptians attempts to explain it away as an accident. They lost even more 'face' with their actions. The horror for the passengers in their last minutes is hard to comprehend.
Exactly the same thing happened two years before after the SilkAir flight 185 crash. Yet again, it was caused by its captain despite the local investigators also played the game of mechanical failure.
In total 5 crashed happened because of the captain or copilot, the first victim was Japan Airlines flight 350 in 1982. This case was followed by Royal Air Maroc's flight 630, in 1994, SilkAir flight 185 in 1997, this Egyptair 990 flight, Malaysia Airlines flight 370 in 2014 and Germanwings 9525 the following year. For the latter, it's known that its perpetrator, Andreas Lübitz, was, as a pilot, fully aware that the MH 370 was driven to the ground by (one of) its pilot(s). He collected a lot of press cuts about the case and then decided to do the same after he got a sick leave from is doctor who knew how bad he was and that he shouldn"t be in charge of a flight again. The investigators found the doctor paper in a bin at Lübitz's.

Egyptian passed-over elderly First Officer 'I rely on God', was also disgruntled. Top management is flawed. From what I understand, the F/O was due back in Cairo for a disciplinary hearing on allegations that he made sexual advances on a female flight attendant. This would have been grounds for his immediate dismissal.
Hence he chose, what was for him the path of the least resistance by committing suicide.
Unfortunately he didn't have the courage to just take his own life; he chose to take hundreds with him.

I know this is obvious but they should have not let him man that seat if he is under scrutiny for such acts. Driving a car or any vehicle has its risks but driving an airplane has far greater risks and is more gruesome if left in the hands of a pilot whom is mentally unstable and who is emotionally distraught.

I can't believe that there are still those who say this wasn't a suicide flight and still claim that it was some catastrophic loss of flight control or something.
If I'd been flying for a fraction of my shift, and the relief F/O said " yep, I'll take over now " (paraphrasing), I'd be a little suspicious, just saying.
I believe that they had a "few words" before he was allowed to take over. What a shame that it WAS allowed.
Captain may of given in due to needing to use the restroom.
The relief pilot had seniority because of his age. But yeah, it is suspicious.
I'm guessing the same results, but with some survivors. Because when it neared time for landing, he might've requested to take over and tried to crash the plane then, too.
Amazed that Egyptair is still in business.
And Germanwings was gone with the wind after the suicide crash in France five years ago.

As part of a tour group, I was on the last flight to Cairo out of JFK before the Egyptair crash and learned about it upon arriving in Cairo. Friends and coworkers back home were in a tizzy. They didn’t know if it would be polite to call my parents to inquire whether I was still alive.

Imagine the horror endured by the passengers aboard this flight. When people choose to fly, they trust that they'll be safe and that the men/women operating the flight are of sound mind and will not put their lives in danger, ESPECIALLY not intentionally, so it's actually rather scary that you could get on a simple flight that's being controlled by someone (for lack of a better term) with some kind of death wish.
You have a much better chance of not running into this horrific scenario if you fly planes piloted by western countries like the US, Canada or Western Europe. I would avoid Arab, African or some Asian countries like Malaysia.

I like this channel. I’m not really into airplanes as a hobby or anything, so I obviously don’t understand all of the technical terminology, but it’s balanced enough to where I can use context clues to get the idea. It’s a delicate line this channel navigates well.
For some reason I really noticed the transparency of the windows in this animation; seeing inside the cabin as it nosed over into its vertical dive made it all the more disturbing and terrifying.
Yeah, I was wondering what the terror inside those windows must have been like. :(

Horrendous. I can't imagine how frightened the passengers- and how alarmed the crew- must have been, probably comprehending (if/while still conscious) that they were experiencing a long fall, into the ocean, and at night.. especially so when a fear of heights and a fear of deep water are such common phobias.
That too in pitch dark 😭 I can't even imagine how they felt 🙏

I am not a pilot, but in the 90’s I worked around UPS career pilots around the time this happened. All of the pilots I talked with said the crash for sure had to be deliberate. They were emphatic about this.
Please understand that in Islam If you Kill non believers ( Khafir) you will go in Haven and get 72 Hoors ( Virgins) . The way the FO ( Al Batuti ) behaved with Women employees in Hotels and the fact that he was not going to be flying again to America, he may be upset and following his religious beliefs that Killing other people will help him go to Haven. He purposely shut the engine to crash in the sea, he even did not reply to the Captain when he asked him what happened because he was trying to Crash the plane. This is the reason why the Egypt Government does not want to accept that it was Al Batutis fault . You will see the same behaviour in Malaysia Government for Malaysian Flight 370 disappeared in 2014.
Out of the four pics of the pilots, the one I thought that looked friendliest and least likely to be the culprit, was the actual culprit hahaha.... boy was I wrong 😑

Funny that, to me he looked the least like a pilot.
Red flag for me was he's still a FO at the age of 59. I'm sure there are exceptions, but most pilots nearing retirement would be disgruntled at that. Perhaps an indication of a less-than-stellar career. The guy probably had history - I doubt his antics in the hotel lobby were the first.

I do think it’s the worse way to die, when you see the plane falling and waiting to hit whatever it is going to hit, and there is nothing more terrifying than the ocean at night
In just under a minute, everything went down south. Just watching this makes me feel the horror those poor souls faced inside the aircraft. Knowing you are going down and 30 seconds the aircraft just dismantling at 10000 ft in pitch darkness over the Atlantic ocean...
So the probable cause of the accident was the airplanes departure from cruise altitude subsequent impact with water?

That's why the international aviation laws nowadays prohibit leaving pilots or copilots alone in the cockpit, for any reason,without the presence of another person. I hope the pilots follow the roles though. I expect them to be so since aviation is a very strict industry. Regulators don't fool around.
Surprised the Capt didn't try to punch out the F/O in order to try to regain control of the airplane.
I don't think he realized it was his fault. He asked him to help with pulling the aircraft up. The opposing elevator positioning shows that while the captain was pulling up, the F/O was doing the opposite. If you look at the time stamps you can see that this all happened very quickly.
He didn't immediately suspect the f/o was at fault and assumed that they could simply pull the aircraft back up. Not knowing just how demented evil and totally broken this sorry sack of a human being was sitting next to him.
He only had a few seconds to figure out what was going on. And a pilot deliberately flying the plane into the ocean is not high on the possibilities list.
Hindsight's a wonderful thing. However in many fatal crashes, indecisiveness by the captain is a major cause of an emergency situation not being recoverable.
When a problem arises, there's limited time to identify exactly what that issue is, and correct it before the plane cannot be recovered. Planes are so sophisticated now they practically fly themselves - on a typical long haul flight, there's no more than around 8 minutes in which the pilot is actually flying the aircraft, obviously that's take off and landing. The rest of the time, autopilot takes care of it.
But when something goes wrong, the captain is suddenly revealed to be strong or weak - his qualities of leadership, ie keeping a cool head and problem-solving under pressure, are crucial. Yet it's surprising how many captains don't rise to the occasion!
Following this channel, I've been shocked at how many captains are keen to hand control of the plane to their co-pilot - and even when something's gone horribly wrong and they're facing imminent disaster, the captain fails to take back the controls from him!
Those black box cockpit recordings don't just reveal the story of the crash - they tell us an awful lot about human nature!

These videos are so depressing and yet here I am watching like a maniac.
Initially, there was speculation that the crash was related to lauda air flight 004 which was caused by an uncommanded thrust reverser deployment, leading to a similar nose dive from cruising altitude. The two 767s involved were assembled back-to-back and had identical engines.
Make sense why he would switch off the engine
A pilot remaining silent in circumstances is near impossible - unless there was some kind of psychotic break. The flight recorder would have reflected speech conversation with troubleshooting and communication.

@@bl41ck97 it was a good thing? Like someone engaging speed breaks and you still shut off the engines but need to gain altitude is a good thing? Nah no way. The Captain sounded more like "the heck did u just shut our engines?" It takes some time to restart both engines and gain power. If you're almost stalling or in a nose down dive you don't have this time.

Like that one man who never flew a plane but stole one, had fun with it, did a flip and flew for a while before crashing down on purpose. He was suicidal but didn't want to put anyone else in danger, he even felt bad for the ATC for possibly ruining their day. A real fun and good man, not a pathetic coward like this guy.

I remember this. At the time, the press was reporting this as an "unsolved mystery".
Two years later in 2001, I was a National Guardsman doing airport security in the immediate aftermath of 9-11. An airline pilot I was chatting with was telling me about this particular crash. He said it was pretty common knowledge that investigators believed the FO was an Islamist, and that he was carrying out a suicide attack on the Egyptian Govt officials onboard. This pilot I was chatting with even mentioned he'd heard Al-Batouti was part of a terrorist cell based in Los Angeles (this, in 2001).
al-Jama'a al-Islamiyya was a group dedicated to the overthrow of the Egyptian government and replacing it with an Islamic state. They came to prominence three years after this crash, when one of their L.A. cell members committed the 2002 Los Angeles International Airport shooting. The scuttlebutt was Al-Batouti was also believed to be a member. But it was covered up in 1999/2000, presumably, because it was bad all around for Air-travel and Tourism. Heaven forbid that the public might get the idea that terrorists could possibly use airplanes for their operations.

Wow, I knew about this crash before but always thought the relief FO had locked the other crew members out of the cockpit when he decided to crash the plane (kind of like the Germanwings crash). Very surprised that the captain was actually sitting in his seat and on the controls for the last couple minutes, seemingly questioning the FO's actions.
That system was implemented after 9/11, the captain fought the tremendous g force pulling him backwards to reach his seat, that’s how hard the captain was fighting

Correct, the F/O was due to face a disciplinary hearing upon his return to Cairo. He would have had a Hell of a lot to lose, his job, reputation and his pension. He was very close to retirement.
On another flight UA-cam channel (Allec Joshua Ibay) this case has already been recreated, and sone details missing here is that the relief copilot had already been warned of impending suspension by EgyptAir when he had indecently exposed himself to whamen in a hotel lobby in the US.
But Captain and crew were still content to trust their lives to him. Similarly we trusted TheFlightChannel to fully inform.

What a nightmare! There should've never been a time one pilot was alone in the cockpit! They had many pilots on this flight & I'm baffled as to why none of the other pilots rushed to the cockpit to find out why they started going downhill! The captain was heading home for his wedding!

Mental health is no joke, specially for jobs like these. I know that this was more than 20 years ago, but it reflects how occasional medical checks have to be done more regularly to pilots.
You could substitute "religious fanaticism" for "mental health issues".

I'm not sure if I remember hearing about this when it happened, so tragic when a pilot is left alone inside a cockpit and you never know what's inside his head at the time he's alone, even though the captain was able to make it back inside the damage was done already and he could not save the plane, so many innocent lives lost just makes me sick to my stomach just watching the words narrated about this murderous pilot
Where were the other two pilots when the plane started to nose down? I don't understand. I don't understand either why no passenger or crew member alerted or came to the cockpit to enquire about what was going on!?

There was a Japan airline pilot who crashed the plane into the ocean and caused the deaths of 22 out of a hundred or so passengers. He did some time and is now retired in a rich section of Japan prefecture
