- What does it take to shift the UK’s position on Palestine?
One lawmaker, Layla Moran, has a deeply personal drive to fight for change. Her relatives have been trapped in a Gaza Church for days, surrounded by Israeli snipers and tanks and running out of food and water.
Moran has been fighting to change the position of her Liberal Democrats Party for years, to introduce policies about recognizing a Palestinian state by bringing together Israeli and Palestinian voices.
Her efforts led to the party calling for a ceasefire in Gaza on November 13, more than a month before other British parties budged on their blanket support for Israel’s military action.
Now she wants the government to commit to joining the international community in pushing for an end to the war, and to uphold its “historic obligation” to recognising Palestinian independence.
This week on the Big Picture, we speak to Layla Moran about her family, her Palestinian identity and her belief in dialogue as a tool to bridge the bitter divide.

It hurts me as a muslim that our christian brothers and sisters have lost one of the oldest churches in the world in GAZA. And even more the people that have lost there lives.

It is utterly sad that some Christians only started to care when they learn that there are other Christians in Gaza. But nonetheless, the more people care, the better.

There's lawyers and other legal experts who are Christian Palestinians who use their professions to help Palestinians of all religions. Israel's attacks have been a threat to all Palestinians. Christian Palestinians are a minority, but the few there are help make an impact. It kind of helps, that they can't be labeled Islamist fanatics.
When a religious institution gets attacked, it also calls on additional outrage for crimes targeting religious people. The Pope spoke up about this incident, but he also expressed support for Palestine from when this started.
That's very noble and admirable of the Pope but unfortunately we have reached a stage where this disease and cancer called Zionism (political ideology) takes precedence over any other peace loving religion.

I have very deep sympathy for the plight of Layla Moran's family and with all Palestinians caught up in this genocide, regardless of their religion or none. I could see that Layla was treading a careful and diplomatic path and naturally for her that is the only course of action possible. I wanted her to talk about political Zionism and the carnage it is causing but I know for her diplomacy is all she dares do because her family's lives are literally at stake. If political Zionism had not infected the US and the UK governments, the position would not be as dangerous. That is the dilemma that the world still has to face. Good Jewish people and their moral stands have been cast aside by the fascist Zionists.

I am a Christian too - this carnage is not about religion and I don't think we should imply that it is. The truth of this inhumanity needs to be shared with all of humanity.

I don’t understand how Layla was able to escape Gaza and get a Top Education becoming an MP but her family is stuck languishing in Gaza? Why didn’t she use her powerful position to get them out? Please help me understand
She is a backbench Opposition MP, not someone with close ties to any government, either in UK or Israel~Palestine. She certainly has no influence over Hamas, which she opposes as much as she does Netanyahu's government.

She is highly regarded as a constituency MP. Ed Davey took no money from Post Office lawyers. He worked for a consultancy that later also had the Post Office as a client, but it was a different branch of the firm and he wasn't involved in that work in any way.
Did Layla speak up for the Muslims?

Layla is a vocal opponent of Hamas. As a Palestinian Christian you wouldn't expect her to have any love for a reactionary Islamist terrorist organisation. Her nuanced position, opposed to both sets of extremists, means that the "river to the sea" cloud probably regard her as a sell-out.
The tactics being used, the pogroms, the various methods are the same used by the Germans in WWII. I speak of the terrorization of civilians, the silence of the politicians in other countries, seemingly blind or complicit, the obvious prejudice against Palestinians by Israeli people, attacks from settlers, theft of money, possessions, removal of women and children...mass graves, so much of this is history repeated. This is very similar to how Israel was primarily targeted, and attacked by the Nazis. The length of time it took for assistance during the Holocaust was far too long, also. This has gone on long enough. We are not blind. Historians know far better than me what is happening. Why are they so silent? This has to be dealt with now. Peace should be the end result, not the annihilation of impoverished and innocent civilians. Women , children crying out, praying and begging Allah for Mercy. Well may God, the Creator, whomever you believe the source of life to be...unite us in love and understanding of fellow children, ( aren't we all ) women, men...and come to tbeir aid and assistance.
