21:30 You are right Hera, there was a champion there, and even I used to make all of my villagers work on wood there, and when you get closer, he becomes yours.
yea i remember seeing a yellow dot on the map in between the trees and thinking what is there , i wished i had the bought version of the game so i can make trebs to cut the trees and reach the yellow dot to see what that is
I went through HD edition and compared the campaigns to DE previously; a lot of units and messages in the trees were removed in DE. The units might have been used for triggers or to keep civs alive.
Gotta agree, Moctezuma was really nostalgic. Either the jungle bits, or the part where you capture Tenochtitlan. Joan of Arc, mostly. I remember when she had that brown cloak at the start, looking like the Scythes in Attila campaign. Barbarossa too, the first mission, where we probably all made a bazillion badass teutonic knights. The Cid too, Saladin. The OG ones for real. Does anyone remember the REAL nostalgia : the 2 icons on the desktop : helmet with red mohawk for Age of Kings, the spanish helmet with blue feather for Age of Conquerors. The cnematic where they play chess and it morphs into an epic battle ? Doing post imp games + aegis to spam Elite War Elephants. Killing ships with trebuchets cause making navy was for noobs.
For me it's gotta be the first Joan of Arc campaign. That whole idea of marching through unknown lands, not knowing what you encounter next, it captured my imagination for a long time.
You know what is a great mod to use today? The 'original sounds' mod. To hear the original sound for the town center and for the IAAOOOOOs is great. :)
Indeed, they used to place these "one unit in the corner of the map" - to what I presume not allow a given player to resign/get defeated in the scenario. I think they should've just kept them regardless, even if they weren't needed anymore. :)
I remember when i was a kid, i used to go to my cousin's house and he had a demo installed that only came with the William Wallace campaign. However, after u beat the falkirk battle, it unlocked the other AoK campaigns. So we would beat it to play the other campaigns, such a fond memory
The most nostalgic campaign for me was the relic one from the William Wallace campaign (i think it was the 5th) as it was the first one with castle age "freedom" and the one having an ally city to protect and "upgrade". Special mention to 9:09 which in the spanish version of the game is pretty iconic. There are no veteran aoe 2 players in the spanish-speaking community who could not recognise the legendary "HA LLEGADO WALLACE" quote.
It's funny how in real life, Wallace lost this battle due to letting pikemen get arrowed to death while not charging with his idle cavalry; and after a few years, he got betrayed by one of his followers and imprisoned by the English
I had a trial version of this game and this was the only campaign I had so I played it for hundreds of hours. I chopped all wood on all maps, carefully figured out victory conditions, walled enemies for hours and so on. Old maps used to have just sand in outside invisible areas but DE version has normal random map 11
There was a yellow champion in the left corner! The purpose was to keep the William Wallace player alive. And similarly, in the fourth Attila the Hun scenario, there is a blue samurai (of all things!) in the top corner to keep the roman army alive, which you can kill if you treb cut or chop through, but I don't remember whether it helps your chances because defeating the roman army might have had a trigger regarding the number of remaining units that only comes into play once the army has spawned. Blocking the spawning points of the army, though, did help a lot.
Mine no .1 Nostalgic campaign is Temujin becoming great emperor Genghis khan became a legend after his suffering called himself Scourge of God Hu Hu Hu ..... Tenri blessed me....
There was definitely a unit in the corner!! Also I sometimes built my castle outside the walls to protect my outposts. For some reason I was so determined to not let my outposts fall. Personally I played montezuma 1 a lot more than this one though
2nd Saladin is easily the most nostalgic for me. I used to struggle SO HARD on it because blue lands cavalier in your base and I would always die to it. Also, "Reynald is attacking our caravan!" is such a classic voice line. 😊
The English could attack at any time. You have some walls already but you should complete is as soon as you have enough stone. This hits hard. All I did was play this campaign when I had the demo version of this game
I saw a movies about the Mongols about Genghis khan ,Joan of Arc maid of Orleans,Brave heart about William Wallace , Attila the Hun waiting to watch movies about El Cid , Montezuma, etc
I would LOVE to see you play the extreme version of this campaign. I thought few times that such mod would be rad and I had no clue it exists. I'm gonna look into it.
I've always felt a connection to the Celts, ever since I played this game as a kid and discovered their music, thanks to my parents. Recently, I found out I have Cornish ancestry, which is pretty mind-blowing considering my nationality.
Favorite campaign mission gotta be a tie between the first Genghis Khan mission and The Scourge of God, the first in the Atilla the Hun campaign. Those campaigns were most of the reason why the Huns and Mongols were my favorite civs, even though I couldn't micro cav archers worth a damn, lol. Also gotta say, I loved the Moctezuma mission where you have to convert enemy vills to make a base and then tear down the Tlaxcala wonder. Loved converting Conquistadors in that mission, no matter how many monks I lost XD.
a trick, for those who have installed the game but do not have the cd, if you finish the last wallace campaign all the campaigns are enabled, after that you just save the game and you can play any AOE campaign
The most nostalgic campaign for me is the first one from Barbarossa. It felt so nice to fully stone wall my island to protect against multiple enemies hahaha also loved the full attack paladins from teutons, the civ completely shaped my architectural taste in AOE
Man I've played Montezuma 1 like 50 Times over. I only had demo version and for example one game converted plumes because for me they were the coolest units in the game.
One thing I liked doing is to fortify the passing with walls and keeps but leaving a path towards my base, then sit back and watch as the English keep trying to cross into my base while getting shot by the Keeps.... And I mean A LOT OF KEEPS, like a whole row of them.
Definitely would enjoy seeing you play through the Montezuma campaign. Still one of my favorites to this day and definitely the most nostalgic for me, as I didn't start playing as a kid until The Conqueror's expansion was out and it was the first campaign I decided to try for whatever reason 11.
I play mostly campaigns and I play totally original (no grid, no small trees) - infact I even have the mod that puts the OG AOK sounds back in over the new ones. But the most nostalgic actual mission for me? If not "Help, crusaders are attacking out trade routes!" for me it's Aztec 1 putting the relics in each temple, maybe for me because I got AOC and AOK as part of a pack. And yeah I used to finish the walls I'm sure the mission even tells you to do even though there's no real point to doing it. I'd do that then get the castle at the top of the river crossing to wipe out all English. My rule of thumb was also never add a second TC unless pop limit was at least 125. Which was a shame as most pop limit back then was 75 which is insane! considering the size of the maps compared to aoe1. (aoe1 all the pop cap was 50 so I guess they assumed a 50% increase was good enough?) Also this campaign is basically the only time I ever play Celts (despite being from a Celtic country and having ancestors here for 200+ years) - because the Celt civ basically is boring and sucks. Persians FTW
The William Wallace campaign is the best for me. Being Scottish makes you biased though 11. I played it similar to you. I used to be scared of moving out and having my army killed though haha. And it was always an A.I comp lol
I used to always wall the sea path and tower it, kinda copying theirs but on our side. I then built the castle on the right side. I remember something about you having to build it near the water ? But maybe I'm wrong and i just always assumed that.
Yes, there was a unit in the corner because on the older versions you had to have one to avoid yellow being defeated. In DE theres a workaround to keep a player alive with no units or buildings
Historiclly its nonsense but having this climax mission at the end, feeling all the effort and learning now gives u the fruits of your labor was awesome as a child. Obviously I went full celts paladin and woad raiders back then
As far as I'm aware you always could advance to the imperial age back in the day, we simply didn't care much about it. Through the campaign you progressively unlock the ages as you complete missions, teaching new stuff and such (like the 6th mission tasking you to gather relics), this last mission is the climax of the tutorial and is the only one that allows you to get to the last age. It would be a poor tutorial if they never teach you about imp tho.
This Christmas I was a bit ill, and just wanted a nostalgic hit, so I played this and the two preceding missions. I had fun, but even with an ELO a third of Hera's I couldn't believe just how easy this was compared to when I played it as a kid.
9:09 any player who loves this great game remember this epic moment. The first of many heroes who, thanks to AOE, became even more famous than he already is...HA LLEGADO WALLACE!!! 😎😎😎
When I saw the title of this videowithout thumbs I just knew that it must be Wallace campaign. I remember playing this campaign when I was like 12, but as I already played AoE1 it was just for fun.
Bro I have been thinking about this level for two days out of nostalgia I'm glad you thought of it too lmao I always remember "You have some walls already but you shoood complete dum, as soon as ya hava nuff stoeeern" And thenin de the ruined his accent 😢
Why we did not build multiple town centers back in the day was mainly because the total population limit was 75. And even that was an upgrade from AOE1, where it was 50.
Haha same, but I got a version where after I beat the last mission, I got to the campaign overview. So I always had to beat this mission to start any other campaign mission. And yeah I didn't know any cheats then
Ah Hera.. Likewise! I only had the demo version back in 1999, I couldn’t advance to the imperial age either and I didn’t even know how to speak English then so I didn’t understand all the bullshit advices. I did the same lol!

Miss that cinematic indeed!!!!
Genghis Khan 1 has to be my most nostalgic campaign mission. When the hoards of Genghis Khan roll by, and it's like, 28 light cav. Cinema.
Same, I never won the campaign as a kid because i didn't know english
For me it's gotta be the first Joan of Arc campaign. That whole idea of marching through unknown lands, not knowing what you encounter next, it captured my imagination for a long time.

yes there was a blue champion unit in the 2nd scenario of Montezuma campaign. It was probably for Cortez not to resign before the end.
@@AgeofNoob Its been a long time to see you again. I really miss your age contents. Wish you gave some insights how Chronicles DLC played out.
My nostalgic campaign is back in AoE Rise of Rome, and the Colosseum.
18:55 In my old day (Age of King), I built a castle right in front of the plant bridge that leading to the English gate.
The happiest days for me with this game was before I played online. Something's lost when you start playing against other players.
Legit. It's the AoE version of growing up. Losing the metaphorical innocence.
The most nostalgic campaign for me has to be Attila the Hun’s one
One of the best campaign in my opinion.
@@wayne9287 agreed!
yeah those grassy maps
you challeged my every decision

Jean D'Arc for me, by far. I absolutely loved it for the historic period.
It's funny how in real life, Wallace lost this battle due to letting pikemen get arrowed to death while not charging with his idle cavalry; and after a few years, he got betrayed by one of his followers and imprisoned by the English
Angus McFaden was so Robert the Bruce

Daaamnnn. Shots fired at Mr. Yo. Hera didn't even need a pro warmup for him. William Wallace was enough.
3k elo's be flexing... 🤣
Please continue these...just recently got the game after a 20 year break & relearning the game.
There was a yellow champion in the left corner! The purpose was to keep the William Wallace player alive. Mine no .1 Nostalgic campaign is Temujin becoming great emperor Genghis khan became a legend after his suffering called himself Scourge of God Hu Hu Hu ..... Tenri blessed me....
This is the battle that made me in love with the game with all alerting sounds that scared me at first until I made my first trebuchet.

This hits hard. All I did was play this campaign when I had the demo version of this game
Same! In the demo version you couldn't go to Imperial Age and this was the last scenario you could play as other campaigns were locked.
I remember going up to 75 pop and then converting ~50 Longbows back in the days.
I saw a movies about the Mongols about Genghis khan ,Joan of Arc maid of Orleans,Brave heart about William Wallace , Attila the Hun waiting to watch movies about El Cid , Montezuma, etc
Alot of the old campaigns had their pop caps buffed from 75-100+
my first contact with aoe were on aoc2 demo, there was only 1 map, the first missison from montezuma campagin, that game were revolutionary
Imperial Age was indeed blocked in the demo. It was made available in the full release of AoK.
The feeling of making your first trebuchet…
I would LOVE to see you play the extreme version of this campaign. I thought few times that such mod would be rad and I had no clue it exists. I'm gonna look into it.
The voice that never shut up is an integral part of the tutorial campaign in my childhood lol
0:35 yeah I had the demo as well, I did the same, just endlessly played the William Wallace campaign.
An army marches on its’ stomach!
I've always felt a connection to the Celts, ever since I played this game as a kid and discovered their music, thanks to my parents. Recently, I found out I have Cornish ancestry, which is pretty mind-blowing considering my nationality.

Congratulations Hera for completing the tutorial!!
Are you gonna do campaign walkthrough? Think you should try Chronicles too
For me it is either Saladin 1 or Genghis Khan 1. William Wallace 6 is also very nostalgic.
You can change the game speed from the main menu, if you exit campaigns
love the campaign vids!
Campaign content a nice change of pace
Videazo Hera papá, seguí haciendo más de las campañas porfa

Oh I soooo remember this campaign....So Nostalgic. ❤
I waited until the stone was gone and then built the castle there because the road would fit better XD
Please Hera do the Montezuma campaign. It should be called Cuauhtemoc campaign, Jaguar warrior of Tenochtitlan.
Hera i think it would be great if you played the V&V dlc campaign missions. They are way more challenging and also more fun.
William Wallace ultra hardcore-
I don't remember this very much but I've watched the movie with Mel Gibson

"The English are terrorising all of Scotland !!!" ❤❤❤
