@@jalocin Not to get into a deep discussion about an imaginary concept in a fiction, but certainly for me as a middle-aged man, some of the vitriol thrown by other fans at recent Star Wars films and shows has been almost incomprehensible. It has claimed to come from a concern for authenticity, and yet the focus has been not upon weaknesses in plot and storytelling of which there have been many) but quickly upon the real-life people portraying the imaginary characters that they didn't like, and ascribing imagined agendas to those individuals as human beings - for which these critics have felt entitled to personally attack them. I just don't get that.
This leads me to speak to just one 'in-universe' concept that you mention: that of 'the way the Force works.' I've seen millennial-aged fans in a fury because of the idea that a kid suddenly levitated a broom, or a young woman with little prior training has expressed an affinity for the Force which Luke never did. They have railed at the portrayal of Luke in The Last Jedi in particular, at his loss of connection, and his temporary submission to his inner fears and doubts. As a middle-aged man, i simply thought, "You understand me!" This is what it means to be human and to live, no matter whether you have access to arcane forces or not. We experience adversity, and we have to rely upon our inner resources and our connection to the people around us to see ourselves through. And that is what the Force was originally portrayed to be: a form of Zen conversation with the inner self, and decisions, at every moment, as to how we wish to show that inner self to the world - a conversation in which learning to fail time and again is the true key to understanding. Sadly, I worry that - for a millennial or younger fan, who has imbibed decades of turgid novels and backstories, edgy but badly misconceived adoration of the 'Sith' perspective, plus portrayals of the force through video game mechanics which tend to make choices between the Light and the Dark side simply a matter of taste - if that simple concept has been lost: and that, when they saw it in pure form when Luke and Yoda talk in The Last Jedi, they did not recognise it. My young padawans, that's why Yoda burnt the books. ;-)

Great analysis! One thing you commented on that struck me is how Andor aged up the story rather than retreading the Hero's Journey. I think that is one of the reasons that it worked. So many of the follow-ups just try doing the Hero's journey again when that is just one of many archetypes one can use. There's also the Maiden, the Queen, the King, the Crone, the Mage... KM Weiland explores this in the book "Writing Archetypal Character Arcs : The Hero's Journey and Beyond."
On a side note, while Joseph Campbell did of course draw upon Jung, I think he more directly repurposed the work of Mircea Eliade to appeal to popular audiences.

We can agree on this being neither scifi, neither for adults, neither for males. Is it any good for girls then ? It seemed to me you started answering that question, giving a lot of credit to its vaguely interesting, though as you pointed not original, initial idea. Then left the subject until 14', but gave no answer. What does this show has to offer to a teen girl ? In my early teens, as a perfectly ordinary child with a love for good stories, I was reading Verne's Voyages extraordinaires, Boulle's Malevil, Barjavel's Ravages, Bradbury's Martian chronicles, Asimov's Fondation, all recommended by a teacher. I might not have understood it all, but I enjoyed it and it stayed with me. If all of Disney is content, and not art, how can this show be any good ? Kids are not mindless animals to be entertained, and they need food of the body and the mind in large quantity - not McDonalds and Acolytes, even though parents want to save on cooking.
For a moment, I was wondering what was going on, since you had decently interesting things to say on Asimov, amongst others. Luckily, since I watched several videos of yours, I did pick up on your strange dislike of the 'vocal critics', and it dawned on me that this is probably your attempt to join the melee of the American culture wars. I came here to have a thought provoking take, though I'm sure we can agree that Star wars offers very little as Sci fi, and was in place greeted by criticisms of opinions that belong to a totally different sphere of thought. You being so ad hominem made me unconfortable (what would Azimov say ?). Like it or not, the Critical Drinkers and Nerdotics of the world have made themselves a part of the story. They riled up their fans (angry, middle-age men) against this show long before the first trailer ever appeared.
Sadly, they have enough influence to affect the online discourse (8 of the top 10 UA-cam videos are by angry middle-aged men crying about the show) and lead a review-bombing campaign against it (do we really need a daily video each time the RT audience score hits a new, artificial low?).

    Star Wars is dead.
How are people who openly hate a franchise's source material put in charge of writing for that franchise? This is what killed Witcher, the Silmarillion, Marvel, and now it's killed Star Wars, just to name a few. As an author, I find this as a very big problem. Stealing someone's life's work and twisting it to fit your own agenda and make you money is a horrible thing to do. Not respecting source material shows a lack of integrity, and it's crazy that its become socially acceptable.
Star Wars is dead, and if you like it and are defending it at this point, then you are clearly nothing more than a mindless consumer sheep, and this problem keeps happening because of YOU.

Hmm, that's weird, because those "outraged middle aged men" you're talking about were much more positive about Rogue One and Mando S1 & 2 - that was also made for 12 year olds, and we're only talking about a couple of years ago, while they also weren't that positive about TROS and TLJ - also made for 12 year olds. It's almost as if your argument is tenuous at best. The critics score for Acolyte is 6.4/10, while it's 8.3 & 9.0/10 for Mando S1 & S2, and 7.5/10 for Rogue One. That would kind of imply that the Acolyte, by consensus, is inferior to those shows, just as BoBF and Obi-Wan and Ahsoka were (by critics consensus). How do you arrive at the conclusion of blaming fans and youtube and not a response to ever worsening quality content?

    • @He.knows.nothing
      @He.knows.nothing 9 днів тому +2

Rogue one was not made for kids, and although Mando was, it does also have a specific appeal to parents that makes it good family oriented media. It's also true that Mando incorporated the clone wars narrative within it which also effectively drew in teens and young adults. Boba Fett was where they really got lost in the sauce of not knowing which crowd to appeal to.

    • @Ruylopez778

@@He.knows.nothing Rogue One was PG-13/12A, just like ROTS. Mando S1 and S2 have broad appeal, yeah. And there was no backlash, which invalidates the claim made in the video that the problem is the audience of "outraged middle aged men". Boba Fett & Obi-Wan were made to pander after the gushing about a nostalgia bait Vader scene in Rogue One. Lucasfilm have failed to translate Boba, Obi-Wan and Ahsoka to D+ shows without dividing opinion. Critics by consensus (even including the access media incentivised to be nice) don't give those shows the same praise as Mando S1 & S2. That's not the fans' fault, sorry, no matter how you try to make excuses. Yes, there was more expectation on these characters, but these shows were poor.

    Damo,
One of the things I've seen coming up a lot in the negative reaction from fans that you didn't mention is this: Much or most of the pre-show communication from Disney about the story was that it was going to be "Sitch-centric" and feature the "bad guys" as the leading characters.
At least to this point, this has not been the case, and a lot of fans are pretty bent out of shape about that. They feel like they were sold one thing but got when Amazon dropped it off, it wasn't that thing at all.
The reason this hasn't bothered me personally, it because I never believed it. I could write a bunch about how Star Wars could dig into the philosophy and ethics of the Sith cult and how intelligent SW would have to reexamine and rework that stuff to actually create interesting complex characters that were beyond the typical cardboard cut-out villians that SW features more than 90% of the time. Y'know, throw in some Nietzche and Max Stirner; Ayn Rand, maybe a bit of Bismark, definitely Machiavelli, and then, for frosting on that cake, Anton LaVey. Oh, and to be topical, throw in some Curtis Yarvin and the NeoReactionary Dark Enlightenment movement. Or, y'know, just imagine the Sith as whatever Byron, Coleridge, or Goethe would have written if they were obsessed with villains rather than heroes. Or maybe all the bad guys become something like Maul was for the duration of the Clone Wars and Rebels shows. But in those shows, dude wasn't the protagonist.
But doing this would completely change SW into something most definitely NOT for the kids that Old Man Lucas was concerned with, and that Disney is concerned with.
Remember how Rodriguez talked about Book of Bobba Fett like it was going to be a serious Mafia story with the main characters all being bad guys? We saw what a shit-show that was...I liked it anyway, but it's because I've been an SW fan since 1977. A mafia don type SW story (a good one, at least) just isn't possible unless and until SW completely stops being for kids and probably gets completely rebooted.
AND, if the Acolyte did this and the bad guy characters in Acolyte were really compelling, then damn near all the other bad guys from all the other stories look like completely boring morons and fake, shallow, and insufficient vehicles for whatever story they're in. A successful Sith-centric Acolyte story WOULD produce a large section of the fandom who legitimately were entranced by the Sith and wanted to actually be the bad guys in real life. People would be freaking the F out right now about how the Acolyte's bad guy heroes were a dire threat to the "purity" and "innocence" of children and another example of how the leftist media establishment was trying to destroy Western Civ.....
....But if they made the Sith-centric heroes of the story NOT this stuff and got them to more-or-less conform to the mustache-twiddling Ming of Mongo kinda stuff that Lucas started the franchise with, they destroy SW as it's always been known. When protagonists in the story are seen as shallow, or poorly fleshed out, incompetent and/or blundering, the fans react the way they did to Jar Jar, General Hux, or Kazuda Xiono, who's ridiculousness was probably the chief contributing factor to the death of the Resistance show. There is no way in hell a giant, big market-cap risk-averse corp like Disney is going to do that with one of THE primary assets in their portfolio.
Anyway, to sum up, part of the problem with the fan reception to Acolyte is really bad marketing and communication from Disney (which they've already done before) which has infuriated fans because they feel jerked around. I'm personally having a decent time with the show a think it's in the "middle of the pack" for SW stories, but, y'know, as I said, I even liked Book of Bobba Fett which was pretty much trash.

Is this a trend where everyone from the Anglosphere is so out of touch with the world outside of it? I'm a woman, from the east, former Star Wars fan, not anymore. Nothing to do with your sex, it has to do that the shows were supposed to be for everyone, but now they are made only for the Anglosphere with the political and societal messages that don't apply to any other place on this planet. It's just not for me, and it's not for the majority of the planet, that's why recent projects from Hollywood are scraping to make money and they usually don't. People are fed up with lectures from the Anglosphere... I don't care if you all eat each other up among yourselves, but that's not my form of entertainment, never was.

I haven't watched The Acolyte yet, and i doubt that i will enjoy it all, but one thing I can tell is that I don't think xenophobia is something that you can learn from being a fan of Star Wars. It's a nonsensical argument to suggest that societies cannot enjoy or relate to stories concerning other cultures. I watch Japanese and Korean dramas regularly, in which characters follow moral and cultural norms far removed from my own which would never work here, and yet I can follow them and be interested in them, even when I disagree with the choices they might make. It would be madness to try to ban them from the 'Anglosphere' just for that! when it comes to Star Wars, it's an even dafter idea: they are pulp remakes of Kurosawa films in space! Are they representing American or Japanese values? Or neither?

I do not feel that those who complain want something made for them as they are now. When they made a Star Wars show that was actually for adults, Andor, they actually mostly complained about that as well(and I hate them for it). What they want is something that is made for 12 year old boys the way 12 year old boys was when they themselves were 12 years old. That is why many in their fifties love Mandalorian for the first two seasons. It really, at least to me, felt like Buck Rogers or Tales of the Golden Monkey with a much higher budget!

I love your thoughts on Disney and content vs art. In regards to your comments concerning how young males and females are receiving different cultural coding; you make it sound as if the sum total of influence they receive is cultural and simplistic. I believe that you have overlooked an enormous amount of nuance and variation, as well as failing to note the weight of evolutionary, social, biological, and neurological factors. Would any of us believe that boys and girls act the way they do merely by influence of current cultural norms? Would that not be to ignore the millions of years of human and prehuman development? Or has that time and those existential pressures not been as impactful as the last five thousand years of recorded history and our present assumptions of the times and culture we live in?
Further, I understand your dismissal of the cry baby toxic fans. And I agree that star wars for the most part is a children's fiction. But I'm disappointed that you do not acknowledge that there are some arguments of merit to be made against rewriting a beloved legacy fiction into something to serve intentions somewhat alien to what it's creator intended. In short, I believe that you are strawmaning your opposition, which is a weak and foolish method of debate when one is not a great look. I agree those nerdrotic guys are on the wrong path but that doesn't mean that everything opposing the idea of loving the show is wrong. Just my thoughts here obviously. Anyway I do enjoy your work. Love your take! 40-60 year olds can still enjoy the original Star Wars trilogy for the rest of their lives. The fact that Andor was made by Disney means they still care and can offer something for older audiences. I grew up with the original Pokemon games and tv show, and while I'm not a fan of the newest releases, millions of children are, and that's ok because they're the intended audience. I can always pickup and boot up my gameboy and pickup where I left off 20 years ago. Nice take Damien. I believe Campbell was more in the vein of Freud than of Jung; there is loads of Freud in the first "Hero" book. Sure, we are in the realm of the archetypes which is Jung. If I remember, Jung characterises the male subconscious as a shadowy female figure, the "anima", which we see in dreams (Jung's patients had remarkably Jungian dreams). Early on he postulated a complementary figure, the "animus", a radiant male form seen in women's dreams. You see, women are actually unconscious; the "animus" symbolises their consciousness, if they had one -- anyway it was something like that.
Bringing it back to the show, it appears (from my non-watch) that the duality is insufficiently polarised: Mae and Osha look and talk exactly the same. We see bad twin first, presumably for dramatic tension (as if), but diluting our sympathy for good twin. Yes, I wouldn't be at all surprised if good twin originated as an imaginary "normal girl" alter ego of Leslye. Anyway do keep us posted.

I think that regression to the mean is a real thing when it comes to movies/tvshows/books. Let's be honest, most movies/tvshows/books are about average or below average. The original trilogy, and especially A New Hope, were massive successes. Huge outliers in the realm of narrative success. As time goes on however, and we get more and more Star Wars movies/tvshows/books about half of them are going to be below average and half of them are going to be above average.
I think a lot of Star Wars fans like myself remember the EU as series like X-Wing and the Thrawn Trilogy, but we forget stuff like Jedi Prince or the Crystal Star. We remember the books and stories that were great and significantly above average and forget the ones that are below average. This creates a sort of 'false greatness' that the current Star Wars is being compared against.

I don’t really care for the Acolyte, but there are some elements that I find interesting. I like the portrayal of the Jedi and that the both sides of the conflict are in the wrong. The music is really cool, it has a SW feel, but at the same time is not heavily influenced by the original soundtrack (like Rogue One, for example). It is always nice when composers try something different. The acting is good (except the kids - well, kid actors are usually not great). I don’t like the exposition dump in the dialogue, but there are some beautiful lines too. It all has the Clone Wars feeling (and I love some of the CW).
Actually, when the Acolyte was announced, I imagined some kind of a gritty noir-ish murder investigation and was a bit disappointed when I saw the first trailer. But at least it is better than the recent Dave Filoni stuff, so I’ll continue to watch while waiting for season 2 of Andor.

So the major premise you posit that I fundamentally disagree with is that the audience relating to what they're seeing on screen equates to success. That Andor succeeds because middle-aged men relate to it, or that Acolyte is great for 12 year olds because they relate to it. Humans relate to struggle and tension, no matter the form. Yes, it's nice to relate, but it's never necessary. I think all of us here have greatly enjoyed or despised media he had no relatable anchor points to, simply on the basis of their quality of storytelling.
