    It is quite clear that Sabonis has not the same agility that he had in 1986.

      The guy really never had a "prime" as he had serious injuries from 22 years old. I remember reading something saying how the Blazers team doctor was amazed that he was even walking after he examined him lol

      Sabonis had a severe Achilles tendon injury, and that's the main reason why he didn't go to the NBA earlier. Sarunas Marciulionis joined Golden State in 1989. SSSR disintegrated in 1991, and Sabonis went to the NBA in 1995.

      The soviets didn't take care of his health. They never rested his knees and ankles, overworked him. When NBA docs examined him, they said with just his x-rays he could qualify for a handicap parking space.

    Very interesting videos... As a European who has watched Sabonis in the 80s, I will commit blasphemy and say that he was overrated in certain aspects of his game. I remember quite vividly saying to myself watching him for Zalguiris in the then Euroleague how, for example, he has no back-to-the basket moves to speak of. Just a hookshot, period. At the same time, you had masters of the back to the basket moves and footwork at the time like Dino Radja, for example. Inside, Sabonis just bullied people, but footwork leaved a lot to be desired. His strong points was obviously supreme basketball IQ, incredible hands and passing at 7-3, soft touch and solid defence. But he primarily was a point center like Jokic today and had a better face-to-the basket game. Overall, when you add all up - supreme skills for a giant, IQ and personality, he was a phenomenal player. But he had holes in his game and of course he was diminished by the injuries. At the same time, his exceptional skills allowed him to have an impact playing after both his Achilles tendons were gone.

      Sometimes you don't need fancy moves to be great. Just look at Kareem sky-hook - that move was very simple, everyone knew that it was coming and it was un-guardable :)

    • @bogdanbackup
      @bogdanbackup 4 роки тому

      @@Rufgaudas It's not that Sabas was not great in this respect, people (me included) forget that this was almost 40 (when he first appeared) and 35 years ago (when he was already an established star). His bag of tricks was extensive, but he often simply did not need it - he was so big that he could just turn around and make a layup. But if I had to pick one weakness in his game, that would be the back to the basket moves. Other than that, I can't think of any. BTW, another player who also had no significant back to the basket moves was Divac (also great all around center). Radja had Kevin Mc Hale like footwork on the other hand.

      @@MARIOROSSI-pg3qz 4 years younger... Interestingly enough, really big guys who don't have a low center of gravity tend to have a better face up game. Gasol had great footwork, but he did not have a bunch of up and under moves, fakes and hesitations like Radja. Those who develop that are unguardable. Zoran Savic comes to mind, to a lesser extent.

    Sabonis can hold his own in offense with his size, skills and passing, but even 88, Robinson was too quick for him and had it been in NBA Sabonis would quickly be in foul trouble guarding him one on one.

    • @aitorgoniiradi6746
      @aitorgoniiradi6746 4 роки тому +13

      Sabonis played those games after being injured for a year and it is evident that Robinson was faster. But Sabonis with his size, skills, blocking, shot and passing was able to be more decisive. At WC 86, it happened backwards. Sabonis was a more mature and better player than Robinson but being more erratic USA won the Mundobaket.
      Sabonis's great virtue was being able to adapt to different conditions and play injured like no one else could have done.

      Sabonis had a severe Achilles tendon injury in 1986, and that is the main reason why he did not go to the NBA earlier. "Before signing Sabonis, Portland's then-general manager, Bob Whitsitt, asked the Blazers team physician to look at Sabonis' X-rays. Illustrating the impact of Sabonis' numerous injuries, Whitsitt recalled in a 2011 interview, that when the doctor reported the results, 'He said that Arvydas could qualify for a handicapped parking spot, based on the X-ray alone.'"
