Speaking of paying attention to the story, I have absolutely no idea what’s going on in Destiny 2. I hear names multiple times and means nothing. I played the original Destiny and D2 when it first came out. I still have no idea what’s going on, or why. But then again, I don’t play D2 for the story.

Looks awesome, wish it had a co-op/pvp/br scope. As-is looks super fun but it always feels a little medium putting a lot of buildcrafting work into single player games. The moment you run out of content it feels so empty. Soulslike games answer this problem with NG+ to varying degrees of success and have clever multiplayer options at least there as an option. I’d like to see EA explore this if they value the longevity of the IP.
If they made it like how you suggested or mmo it'll be up there with other notable games.
