By the time of Vysotsky’s death, I was a fairly mature boy and had already listened to a lot of his songs. Therefore, I can judge and compare Diana's performance. First, Diana can sing with her unique voice very similar to Vysotsky’s signature hoarse and raspy voice, but she does not abuse it. Secondly, she does not imitate the strong anguish with which Vysotsky sang this song - but she perfectly understands the essence of this song and felt its nerve (by the way, the only collection of Vysotsky’s poems published at the time is called “Nerve”), performing it in her own way emotional and strong. But in the end it turned out great - she preserved the essence of the song, singing it in her own way and at the same time conveying all the feelings of Vysotsky’s poetry and his emotions embedded in this song

Такой повод есть; его заинтересовал артист из России, который умеет делать именно это - заставлять своих слушателей задумываться о важном, выводить их из зоны душевного комфорта, отказываться от привычных алгоритмов восприятия музыки. На привычный алгоритм нас может настроить, например, её розовый костюм. Он вроде бы говорит нам о том, что перед нами молодая девушка, которая любит улыбаться, любит поп-музыку, хорошо умеет её исполнять. Но дальше мы видим, как эта девушка на наших глазах преображается в сильного, глубокого артиста, способного нас взволновать, задеть всерьёз, потрясти. Это не противоречие - это её природная сущность, изначально ей присущая парадоксальность и любовь к сильным контрастам. Это умение быть совершенно разной, быстро переходить из одного состояния в другое - необходимо хорошему артисту, делает его возможности почти неограниченными. Какая из этих двух Диан Анкудиновых для нас важнее? Вот эта, исполняющая песню Высоцкого, "Can't Help Falling in Love", саундтрек из "Дюны", "Я тебя отвоюю" - или другая, исполняющая "Попурри", "Ночь", "Гавану"? Для меня важнее всего та, что преодолевает по-настоящему сложный материал, работает на грани возможного, открывает что-то новое в себе. И мы, воспринимая в её исполнении эту драматичную, напряжённую музыку, открываем что-то важное для себя. Как это случилось несколько лет назад с песней "Кони привередливые", и как это, не сомневаюсь, случится ещё не раз в будущем...

Thank you, that was a very well thought out comment. It's interesting, I noticed when they transitioned from color to black and white, but since I didn't know what was coming I didn't know why. You are correct that it could have been a little distracting to hear such an emotional voice singing those lyrics while wearing a lot of pink! It sounds from other comments that she has a very wide range of genres she perfoms, and so the pink may fit those other songs ok, but I can see why they made that change for this.

Только Диана смогла спеть её так, чтобы передать все чувства.
Послушайте песни Высоцкого, у него действительно голос как рокот моря. Когда-то Джимми Картер попросил послушать кассету с песнями Высоцкого. После прослушивания, он сказал:" у нас есть ещё один аргумент бояться русских, когда у них есть такой певец". Картер не знал русского языка, и у него не было перевода текста.

Another one of my favorites by her is from the "Show Mask Go On" entitled "Oh, It's Not Yet Evening" ua-cam.com/video/cfTiQkJrLi0/v-deo.html. It's an over 300 year old folk song about a Cossack warrior who dreams of his death in an imminent battle. On Diana's face you see sadness, anxiety and pain of the soul of the Cossack warrior. One would swear she borrowed that soul to perform the song.
I'm not sure how many people appreciate the emotional gasps she produces here that absolutely melt me.

It is difficult to exaggerate how magnificent this performance is.

Already a truly great singer, she is clearly destined to be a great actress too.
She is self-consciously pursuing this option in her training at Gitlis, and she has already been cast in an award-winning film "Spirit of Baikal," albeit only as a voice part.
The crew put together a superb video, "Baikal," with Diana acting (underwater!) the part of the eponymous spirit of the lake, as a vehicle for her performance of the official soundtrack.

The frozen Lake Baikal is a metaphor for the heart of the protagonist - a boy grief-stricken by his mother's death who has shut down. His getting lost on an ice-fishing trip is a metaphor for the emotional trouble he is in. The spirit of the lake, lurking beneath the ice, is a metaphor for the inner strength of his own soul. Though the spirit/Diana helps save him, the message is one of self-reliance. He saves himself.

There is something about this girl and her ability to capture us, mesmerize us, and get past all our emotional barriers and impact us on a deep emotional level. I have never come across an artist that for me can do this again and again. No matter how many times I experience her performances. One that I can watch over and over again, that eventually I hope you get to is her performances of a song called Я тебя отвоюю (I'll win you back). It is just incredible sung by Diana.

Greetings from Scotland! The fade to Black & White signifies the seriousness and solemnity of the song and if you closely watch Diana, she also completely changes her body language and facial expression. It is normal for Diana to allow a very emotional song to take over and Diana herself drifts off, somewhere else. She likens it to singing in a kind of trance. She was 17yo here and among some of her most loyal fans in The Bard Club, not too far from her home in Moscow. This room is called "Nest of the Capercaillie" where people ar at arms length away from the performer. It serves food and drink, so people sit at tables. Very civilised and intimate! A place where Diana can relax and be herself. You can see how the emotions take over and Diana feels all the pain, despair and anguish as if it were happening to her. I have listened to the original by Vysotsky and I much prefer this version because with Diana's voice it flows better (for me). To be honest, it would be impossible (even for Diana) to sing in his super raspy voice, in the style of Vysotsky! 😊 And yes, Diana was crying!

It's where she experimented with and shared some of her earlier songs that she wrote herself because she knew it would be an honest reaction from the audience. It's great to hear comments from people who actually saw Vysotsky perform. I could imagine some of these lyrics might be more poignant for people who are older, which is why what Diana did was so astounding. I do plan on reacting to some Vysotsky directly.

I remember that time when you walk down the street and Vysotsky sounds from the open windows. A simple reel-to-reel tape recorder, a tape re-recorded a hundred times. It is not surprising that with such popularity, many performers, including his last wife Marina Vladi, tried to sing his songs. But it was not even possible to convey the soul of his songs. It took half a century for a young girl to appear who did what others could not do. Your analysis of the video is deep and delightful, I subscribe.

Вам обязательно надо посмотреть выступления Высоцкого, их в сети много, в частности этой песни. Вы прекрасно сами услышите отличия варианта Дианы от оригинала, с Вашим слухом и пониманием это будет нетрудно.
Высоцкий, при том, что номинально был актёром, и актёром прекрасным, всё-таки в первую очередь был поэтом, причём поэтом так и недооценённым, как мне кажется. Яркость его исполнений своих песен обусловленная и удивительным голосом, и общим обоянием, и экспрессивной простотой мелодий некоторым образом затеняет первооснову всего этого - поэтический текст. А стихи Высоцкого прекрасны и своими метафорами, и ритмом, да и вообще всем, чем может быть прекрасна действительно высокая поэзия.
Насчёт бесконечного минора в русской музыке - это, всё-таки, стереотип. У того же Высоцкого много песен шутливых и весёлых.
А минорный вариант Can't help..., который Вы слушали в исполнении Дианы, принадлежит Tommee Profitt :)
Thanks, all good info. I did find out it was the Tommee Profitt version. I will definitely look up some of the Vysotsky performances. I agree with you about the poetry and lyrics. They're so good I think a not-as-good singer could probably do well with the song, but with a stellar singer it really does hit another dimension.
