We've been living in Nicaragua for almost a year now and we love it here. The people are so friendly, it's sunny and warm all year round and the cost of living is super cheap.
I was retired just about one year ago and would like to find good, safe and affordable place to move out of the US. I had been never travel to central or South America before and very interested to be retired in Nicaragua. I was watching your videos and many different people videos and I am wonder if it is safe for single woman to travel, renting a car and place, not hotel, to stay there for some while for first time?
My mom was born in Nicaragua. I was born in the USA. I have Dual citizenship. I left the USA in 2014 and retired to Nicaragua. I absolutely love it here, and it helps that I have a lot of family here. I have not left since I got here, and have no desire to leave. Everything he says is true.

I left the USA in 2014 and moved to Nicaragua, at the age of 50. My mother was born and raised here. Because of that, citizenship was automatic for me. I have Dual citizenship with the USA. I have a 2600 sq ft home with two bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, and an interior patio. I pay $250 a month. Water is never more than $5 a month. Cable and internet $34 a month. Car insurance for $70 a year will only get you liability, full coverage cost me $240 per year. Property taxes are 1% of the value of your home. The cities listed to live are the most expensive places to live in the country. Very few people in Nicaragua speak English, unless you are on the Caribbean coast. Food is ridiculously inexpensive, unless you want to eat imported items. Average temperature is between 80-90 degrees every day in most of the country, only getting into the 60s in the highest elevation. Depending on where you live, water can be a huge issue. All said, I love Nicaragua and don't ever intend to leave. Nicaragua has the best roads in Central America.

I've been living in Granada, Nicaragua for 9 weeks now, I don't care for it; it's very slow, not much to see or do and not nearly as affordable as I thought it would be: that being said, if you're willing to live in a hovel (abject poverty) yes, one can live for less than $1000 a month here; I'm single and I'm averaging about $1600 a month. I'm headed up to Managua at the end of February to see if the quality of life's any better up there. Note: as for finding a place to live -- DO NOT use real estate agents, they charge absurd prices. I've found AirB&B has the best prices and use Google Translate to communicate with the property hosts.

Try Carazo BIG Departamento With Jinotepe, Diriamba, San Marcos, Dolores ( nearby beaches, all on Pacific Ocean Coast) Go to the inland areas like Chontales nearby mountain 🏔 range, cattle raising town, close to the beautiful Lake Cocibolca- and HUGE River San Juan, Or even try to go to the highlands, like Matagalpa & Jinotega, much cooler weather and beautiful sightseeing, lots of local celebration throughout the year all over Nicaragua.. or GO to the CAPITAL, amazing Managua, filled with the hustle and bustle of 2 million individuals.. with magnificent local folclore, markets, and great night life.. filled with natural beauty and resources like Lakes, lagoons, volcanoes, along with trendy neighborhoods with exquisite architecture like from “Altos de Santo Domingo “& “La Estancia” , well , There’s plenty for every one and every budget..

The best solution to this issue is to by land away from conflict areas, like Managua( too hot for my taste) so far the towns that stay conflict free is Diria, Diriomo, San Juan del Sur and others. please feel free to ask any questions.

Most of what Ronin has stated is true. Lots of goodness to be found. However, since this video was taped before the "unrest" in 2018, his price points are no longer accurate. I'd advise increasing his figures upwards by 25% to give a better idea of prices in 2022. Fuel costs are way up, with gasoline & diesel being sold by the liter not gallon. To fuel up our Toyota truck in the town of Sebaco it cost $83 for about a 20 gallon tank (about 75 liters) and this was for diesel.So just be aware while things are far more affordable in Nica, prices have risen.
Well done, but I'd like to see more of the facts placed on Graphics so I can take screenshots and save them. It's nice to see a breakdown of the monthly expenses for each category in separate screen shots and then a summary at the end rather than just the words. But you did a great job. Running water is a huge consideration. MOST cities and towns do not have running water 24 hours a day. Fortunately the city I live in (Nandaime) doesn't have that issue.

What about violent crime or theft against ex-pats? How do you stay safe when all the locals know you have far more money than they do? And, if a local's wages is only up to $220.00 a month, how does anyone live when rent is $325-$500?
42lookc Nicaragua is very safe so I wouldn’t worry too much. Just don’t flaunt your wealth and you’ll be fine. Everyone is usually very nice and welcoming to tourists. As for your second question, that’s why there is so much poverty in Nica and it’s one of the poorest countries in the world. People don’t make enough money to pay for basic necesites like shelter. Maids and drivers usually live far from the city and multiple generations live together.
@ Adriana Estefania, that rents price is for foreigners, the locals pay less, and they usually live in a place with worse conditions , or they live in the place that passed from their parents for generations, sometimes they build their house too, of course not up to modern standards.
Most people own a house there. And it’s rare for people to rent. When he mentioned $300 a month, he probably meant Homes for rent that for US standards. A luxurious apt it’s probably around 900 a month!

Hi Jessica, There are flights in from Miami and a few other places to Managua, but most people cross the land border from Costa Rica (but that border is only open one way, so you can't leave that way). You need a negative Covid test to enter the country. Hope that helps
"You can hire a driver for less than a dollar". That is a statement that is hardly helpful. Is the driver for five minutes, one hour, one day, or one week? Please check your information before you put it out to the public. "you have the option of eating rice and beans every day". Now, that is a great help. Another problem with your video is that your photos are generic, scenes could be from any place in the world. We get the impression that your knowledge is very superficial and that you have never been to the country. Finally, you have to practice talking and not gasping at the end of sentences. It is very off-putting. Record yourself and listen to the breathing then do it again trying to reduce the sound.
Hi Ray, The $1 price would be for a short trip within a city e.g. getting from a restaurant to your hotel. You can get a restaurant meal for around $10-$15 US or if you go to a local take away place you can get a meal for around $3 US. I recognised some of the photos from places I've been to in Nicaragua. The Pacific is nice but the Atlantic Coast is the best part to live and is cheap pearl lagoon and corn island visit and you all going to love it .

$50 for electricity isn't expensive at all, in the US you could easily pay $150 a month

I heard most Nicaraguans don't even pay property tax and the government never takes there home away from them.

There are flights in from Miami and a few other places to Managua, but most people cross the land border from Costa Rica (but that border is only open one way, so you can't leave that way).
You need a negative Covid test to enter the country.

"You can hire a driver for less than a dollar". That is a statement that is hardly helpful. Is the driver for five minutes, one hour, one day, or one week? Please check your information before you put it out to the public. "you have the option of eating rice and beans every day". Now, that is a great help. Another problem with your video is that your photos are generic, scenes could be from any place in the world. We get the impression that your knowledge is very superficial and that you have never been to the country. Finally, you have to practice talking and not gasping at the end of sentences. It is very off-putting. Record yourself and listen to the breathing then do it again trying to reduce the sound.

The $1 price would be for a short trip within a city e.g. getting from a restaurant to your hotel.
You can get a restaurant meal for around $10-$15 US or if you go to a local take away place you can get a meal for around $3 US.
I recognised some of the photos from places I've been to in Nicaragua.
