Here’s a blast from the past! Yesterday my friend Úna Molloy tweeted some videos from the brilliant New Years Eve Turning Pirate Mixtape gigs she ran in Vicar Street over the years. It reminded me I had some footage of my performance from 2016 sitting on my hard drive that never saw the light of day, so I thought I’d share it with yis all today.
It’s funny, I remember Karl Spain the comedian who was the MC of the event turning to me before I went on asking me if I wanted me to shush the crowd and get them quiet. The audience were a little raucous as is their right, it was NYE and the incredible musicians had worked them into this state of euphoria. So I thought, FUCK THAT, I either sink or swim, there’s no way my introduction to the room is having them being told to be quiet for me. If you watch the video you’ll notice that as my performance continued that the room tuned in to what I was saying, either that or I’m deluded. It was really fun to do but I was shitting myself and while I like the challenge of having to win over a room, I wasn’t sure if Úna made the right call to have me ring in the New Year. It was a brave call by her to make, I’m glad she’d faith in me. You can make your own mind up as to whether it worked or not…
Also is that Brían MacGloinn from Ye Vagabonds accompanying me on guitar?
