Wedding gown is beautiful and so is the bride to be. Yes it does feel good & lift a weight off our shoulders when we let it go.

I grew up sewing clothes, started quilting 35 years ago and absolutely love it. I have just come back to sewing clothes. I have learned so much from UA-cam sewists.

Prayer keeps me humble and grounded. WhenI was little I made doll clothes, got to junior high and began to make my own clothes and continued to this very day. But like many of my generation quilts were all around me. In my early twenties I took a quilt class and still quilt. When I first learned everything was done by hand, it took me by surprise when rotary cutters and sewing machines became the way to make quilts. I don't find the transition of sewing to quilting and visa versa difficult, it comes natural. I think the easiest pattern to begin quilting is the nine patch. Simple basic to the point, no special techniques just straight line sewing and seam matching.

I burst out laughing when you said your daughter didn't want the ball gown look. Myself and a handful of friends all got married in the early 1980's and oh the horror and protest from the sales ladies when we told them no crinolines, no hoops. That wedding dress is absolutely gorgeous! I know your feelings of relief. That's how I felt after I finished the Cinderella gown. It was taking up so much brain space. By the way, I broke down and wrote in the bullet journal I have been admiring for two years. LOL Your sewing room is looking great!🌷🌷Bernadette

I learned to sew clothes from my Mom. During college I stopped. I have quilted for a while now and trying to get back into making clothes. Favorite quilt was a quilt with appliqued gears for my daughter's graduation from college.

Definitely a garment sewer. I am doing the quilt block of the month with Izzy and am one behind. So far not “feeling it” but determined to finish it!! I am never going to win any prizes😂😂😂. Just glad Izzy can’t see the blocks 🙈. Happy Sewing now you are without the worry of the wedding dress 😊. Lynne

Amen Jen-in His timing not ours :) Your daughter is absolutely stunning in her wedding dress and will be a gorgeous bride on her wedding day. I find I am a slow sewist when it comes to garment making so I don't think I would find the time to quilt though I admire quilters. I do enjoy embroidery and have embroidered on jean jackets as well as kits in the past. I need to pick up that hobby again. Thank you Jen for such enjoyable videos.

I am a quilter (and use that term loosely) and and a garment sewer. I have been sewing garments since forever! I can make 3 tops in the time it takes me to sew a quilt block!! I find the precision you need to quilt sometimes is beyond me!! Most quilters I talk to, say they did garment sewing years ago, but not any more. They claim that they can buy cheaper clothing than they can sew1
I find most of the sewers on You Tube are in the Great Britain area. They are avid sewers and have lots of interesting gathering and expos there! Wish we had more of this here!

I sewed a couple of garments in 7th grade, but didn't start into the quilting area until my mom made a bunch when I was in high school. I've got a crib-sized quilt that I pieced and quilted by hand. Several of my childhood dresses are represented 😉 I like doing piecing on my Featherweight - it makes such a great straight stitch, and the presser foot makes a nice 1/4" guide. Search for some of the Zakka books, which have great smaller things you can make will cottons; much less intimidating that a bed-sized quilt! I will piece things now 'til the cows come home, but I send the large things to a long-arm quilter to do so I can actually use them 😁

I sewed clothes before I ever quilted. I love sewing my own clothes. It gives me the opportunity to choose what I look like, and not wear overlong clothes, and lumpy clothes. Quilting is a fun hobby and I went mad quilting for a few years but don’t do so much anymore as I don’t have anyone else to give them to. I would say about quilting, sew only what you love. Each quilt you make should be one you really like, even if the skills are a bit more than you would usually try for. I love my quilts that fill this space. Ooh and I love quilts with a black background. The colours really pop! Hope you enjoy your quilting, now you are freed from your worries about the wedding dress. But I still love the clothes videos - they’re super great. Please don’t become only a quilting vlogger😢

As a child I cut squares for mom from our outgrown clothes so she could make quilts. As a teenager I taught myself to sew clothes. The scraps couldn’t be wasted so quilting was a logical next step. Now I still sew clothes and when the bug bites or I need a special gift I quilt.

I have a tank one but after ruining 2 others I now only use distilled water in it 😂. As an 80's bride I love the look of the dress with the hoop! As I have mentioned before I make memory quilts for the family from the clothing of loved ones who have died. But, I have made many, many clothes for my daughter and me and for others, from birth to prom/bridesmaids, etc. I helped make quilts when I was a child and did a lot of patchwork during the time I was making clothing...this was made into vest and jackets. Now I love to make quilts but as of now I don't own a quilt that I have made because I give them to others. Sew, I wear a few different hats...I'm a seamstress, a quilter, an alterationist (not sure that is a word but it is now) a crafter,. a crocheter and a lousy knitter...but as for beginner quilters you should start with a simple block. My first quilt I made by myself was a log cabin. You start with a 2 and a half inch square and sew strips around the square until you get a block to the size you want. There are so many great tutorial on UA-cam to watch for help.

I grew up as a garment sewist. I sewed all my clothes in high school that my mother didn’t, I made my wedding dress, etc. Fast forward marriage and kids, 1st grandchild then retirement. My gift was to learn to quilt, as my mother, aunts, grandmother knew. I love it. Quilting has upped my garment sewing. I would suggest as a beginner you start with the simplest of quilts, a charm square 5” or layer cake square 10”. Jenny Doan MSQC, is perfect. Watch her very beginning You Tube videos they are perfect for beginners. I can’t say which quilt is my favorite because each quilt I do is made for a specific family member, child, or friend and it’s unique to them. My other hobbies when I’m not sewing garments or quilting is reading. Good luck on your quilting journey.

I am first a garment sewer. I decided to try my hand at quilting. So I spent a year learning to quilt and bind and all that stuff. I made a king size log cabin quilt. I made a twin size double wedding ring quilt. I made quilts with embroidery on them and did all kinds of quilting and after a while it just became kind of boring to me. I returned to garment sewing and that is my true love. I love making jeans. I love making dresses. I love making tops. I love knits. I love wovens. I love denim. In comparison. Quilting is so boring. It's all the same fabric and the same seam allowances. Not to say I will never make a little placemat or quilted thing again. But I am definitely not a quilter.

Brav-o for telling your daughter that what she wants is beyond your sewing comfort level! I understand wanting to help children realize a dream, but there comes a limit as to the stress we subject ourselves to trying to fulfill that dream. We just have to say 'no, I'm sorry' and not feel bad about doing so, even if our children are disappointed. Life is full of disappointments and they have to learn that they can't have everything they want. On to your question: I started out as a garment sewist back in the '70s. Probably like you, sewing class was a requirement for girls in middle school. I didn't sew much until after I graduated high school and had to support myself. My first job was in a fabric store, so naturally, I made a lot of my own clothes then because it was more economical to do so. Sewed for my kids when they were little - simple shorts and church dresses. Being a full time working (divorced) single mother didn't allow for much sewing time. Did some sewing off and on until 2020, when the pandemic started and my job elimination gave me a lot of time to sew and do arts & crafts. Watched a lot of YT crafting videos back then, and came across some about quilting. Started quilting (mostly charity) for a couple of years before realizing you can have only so many quilts. In 2022, I tne got interested in garment sewing again after I stumbled onto Vivmom's channel first and then yours, I believe. 😀 Haven't done much in the way of garment sewing yet, due to other issues that have taken up my time, money and attention. Most of my fabric and patterns have been packed up for many, many months in anticipation of my retirement relocation from CA to FL. Have learned so much from you and all the other YT garment sewists, especially by watching the old Sewing w/ Nancy (Zieman) PBS videos on YT, whom I first heard about from one of your vlog posts, I believe. If I can't do much in the way of sewing now, I can still watch and learn from others! 🙂 (I have to admit that it's torture to see all the beautiful garments being made and I can't sew anything until after my move. ) Thanks so much for all your interesting YT videos. Your quilting had included bowl cozies and Starbuck's cup wraps. 🙂 As for as a first blanket quilt, maybe make your grandson a quilt with cute animal fabrics or cars/trucks. Would be very easy to do and very easy to then machine quilt.

I'm still newish to sewing, I have only made one garment (mildly successful pj pants for my husband), and have found a fondness for making hats. I'm working on my fifth hat at the moment. One of my early newbie projects was a set of quilt-as-you-go placemats that I made for a friend. I don't really consider them as a quilting project, because they don't require near the precision that piecing an actual quilt does. Most of my projects so far have been things like totes, scarves, book sleeves, etc. My reason to begin sewing was to make garments, but I've really enjoyed making the non-garment projects as practice and to help build my skills.
That block-a-month project of Izzy's got on my radar a couple of weeks ago, and I intend to do that. I got a fabric quarter bundle from my mother-in-law for Christmas that will be perfect for it. So, I'll be playing catch-up when I start that as well. At the same time, I'll be doing the Closet Core class for learning to sew clothes, which I've recently started. So, I'll be learning both garment and quilting skills at the same time. Quilting feels more intimidating to me, but I love the idea of being introduced to it slowly, a block at a time, through Izzy's quilt along project this year. When it's done, my plans are to hang it on the wall in the sewing space I'm creating in my home. I was so tickled to hear you mention it, and I hope you'll do it and share your progress as you go. 🙂

I'm a garment sewer (when I actually get a chance to sew!) Seems like I end up repairing/ mending / hemming ect. items for family....I love quilts though, and respect the amount of time & talent it takes to complete one, but I myself to not have the patience. I've made potholders and will be making quilted placemats, but that would be the extent of it for me!😊 I hope you will show us your iron set up and demo the steam iron. I'm in the market fir a new one. My iron is my biggest disappointment of my sewing room. I had a sunbeam steam iron that lasted me 30 plus years, and I loved it. Mainly because I was in control of turning it on and off. I HATE the auto off ones on the market today. By the time you iron a seam, sit back down to pin & sew and get back up again , the iron has turned back off 😡😠!!

I have done wall or lap quilts primarily, with a baby quilt thrown in occasionally. I did hand embroidered blocks throughout my teaching career and have set many of them into quilts. I do all my own quilting on my domestic machines. I do NOT love piecing complex quilt patterns. Log cabin blocks are not complicated if you’re good at sewing straight lines and can keep a consistent quarter inch seam. If you want to start small, do a pieced placemat or table topper or runner to see if you’re going to enjoy it. I love machine embroidery and like piecing and quilting in the hoop.

Hi Jen, I’m glad you have that ( heavy on your mind) wedding gown burden lifted. I bet you felt like I’ve got to get this finished but yet you didn’t know( I think you’d mentioned before) how she wanted for the Total finished look. Stressing to you in lots of ways I’m sure. I understand. I’m doing better each wk with my rehab on my left knee being replaced two plus wks ago. Talk about a burden. Leg is stiff, very very stiff,,, so I go to physical therapy 3 times a wk and it helps but also hard too. Hurts sooo bad at times it actually feels good. Might be hard to comprehend. But that’s how I feel sometimes. My range of motion is increasing and I’m close to just using a cane. But I’ll do as I’m feeling and told. Baby steps. For now, all I c an do is dream about sewing. But I think I’ll try some hand sewing to keep my mind busy these next few days. Ha ha, in fact, as I’m writing this, Friday eve, my twin #1 daughter is on her way home on Allegiant. She’s never said much about flying with them(Allegiant) but her hubs who works for the FAA, based out of Tampa, doesn’t like them either! He can tell you lots about that airline. lol he says it’s not really one!!!!yes, how good or bad it is!!! Have a great weekend. I’ll be resting, pt exercises at home and maybe hand sewing. To be a typical spring ( IN weather) wknd for us,,, sunny but too cool to do much outside. Have a good sewing wknd and yes, did you use the pool!??? Also, My hubs says the same, as we have a neighborhood pool to use and we pay extra $ for it,,,,from May to early Sept. “have you used the pool!” lol. We pay, so he thinks I must use it,,,, if it’s cooler weather or I’d like to have a sew day,,, using the pool isn’t on my agenda either! Must be a man thing!!! lol.

I love sewing garments…always have. I’ve made a couple of quilt Tops, but my issue with making quilts is the actual quilting step. I’ve helped my mother hand quilt o a large frame, but it took WAY too long for my taste. Later, I tried machine quilting on a regular machine and to my horror, this resulted in crimps and wrinkles in the backing as well as skewed fabric. I never tried that again. Years ago, I started a quilt as you go project and it sits half done in a tote, to this day. One day, I will get it out again and finish it. (Maybe) maybe

I am not a quilter. I started sewing in 1972 when I was 12. I started sewing because I wanted to make clothes for my Barbie. So my first projects were 11-1/2” doll clothes, and then I advanced to clothes for myself. Before I knew it, I was making clothes for the entire family. When I was 13, my parents bought me a brand new Kenmore sewing machine for Christmas, and I still have that sewing machine today. I do not use it much at all, but I’ll never part with it just the same.
