    We use these to shuttle footage from HyperDecks to iSCSI long term storage. I’ve used the old model for audio recording, it’s really convenient to turn up to a studio, throw in a RAID 1 pair of SSDs, run Pro Tools direct to external storage and walk out with two identical copies.

    At our studio we use this for live backups of individual cameras during a broadcast at sports events. Works amazing for selling high quality moments to other studios or using for promotional footage sometimes.

    This in not a Consumer product. For those who are aware of Blackmagic and what they have done for the Video Post and Live Production markets, this is for the Prosumer and Professional markets.
    Price should be less by all means! Under $500.00!
    This is a welcome Upgrade to the previous Generation Device. Well suited to those of Us who use a Rackmounted Blackmagic SSD Recorder.
    Our optional Solution is using a Hot Swap SATA Drive BAY device which does not Hot Swap / Hot Plug on 2 Gigabyte x399 Motherboards! USB-C does work!
    The closest thing to this is the Blackjet Cinema Dock, Thunderbolt 3, Rackmountable. Very handy!
    Thanks for a great Video!

    The switch would make far more sense on the front. Or a front USB port. Like my BlackMagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K recording direct to the B port, then flip the switch to A setting so my workstation can directly grab the footage right away. For a $600 device to work with their equipment that would make perfect sense to me.

    Some serious talk... why storage solutions are still so expensive? eg : Synology (no HDD included) :(

    • @malisa71
      @malisa71 4 роки тому +4

      because people do not want to learn to setup own solutions. If less people buy them, they would be forced to reduce price.

    • @CodeMonkeX
      @CodeMonkeX 4 роки тому +9

      @@malisa71 it’s the exact opposite. No matter how “simple” this is, it take a lot of development, testing, etc. If they sale millions they can lower the price and still cover the initial costs of releasing a new product. If they only sale thousands then the price needs to be higher. Most storage solutions are not mass market, they are specialized. So they don’t sale as many and cost more. There are a lot more costs that go into a product like this that you don’t see in a tear down inventory of parts.

    • @GodofGrunts
      @GodofGrunts 4 роки тому +5

      @@CodeMonkeX There's also no subscription and you get all the software updates for free. You're not just paying for the hardware, but all the software it comes with.
      I'm a sysadmin and I'm totally capable of setting up my own setup, but my Synology is just "set it and forget" and it's so nice.

    • @malisa71
      @malisa71 4 роки тому +2

      @@CodeMonkeX You have no idea what you are talking about, even more about the build quality and cost. Just from this video alone i saw no special components build it. All were standard grade pieces! Just from the build perspective there is no reason for this kind of cost. And your point about how much they sell / would sell is also wrong. If they would market this is different way, lower the price, more people would be interested into trying to use this. More "casual" people would see benefits to this. Now your average Joe will not even consider this just because of the price, even if he could use this.

    In looking at the required SSD solutions for the new 12K I discovered that the Blackmagic Multidock 12G will not work with the required Ssd media for the 12K. That's because the Samsung 983 DCT 1.9TB SSD drives are U.2. The 10G is not a U.2 device so you cannot use it for that. There is a solution for that however it is not supplied by Blackmagic yet. It's the Mercury Herios 3S.

  • @leexgx

    Just 2 SSDs can just about max out the read speed of around 900-1000MB/s over a actual USB 3 10gbs port (3 SSDs will definitely saturate the single USB 3 10gbs Port read or write)
    What you only get 25 MB/s or you getting the 500-550MB/s on reads
    Also due to these being hot pluggable write caching will be turned off so write speeds likely might be lower then the normal 450-500MB/s (device manager disks and turn off quick removal and enable first tick box for cache, but not the second one, make sure eject before removing the SSD)
    Not sure why software RAID0 or RAID5 wasn't working in windows (but I wouldn't recommend it any way as this is for quick release as you don't have any way to secure the disks)

    • @BuildOrBuy
      @BuildOrBuy 4 роки тому

      SATA specs are Burst mode. However everyone takes them as if they expect that Spec to be achieved as throughput! Not gonna happen!
      But this Device is all about expediant convenience and connectivity!
      Anything in RAID should exist in 3 places. Like You said, no way to lock those drives! And then some Users ask about a front panel power switch. Also not a good idea for same reasons You've mentioned!
