The one 'mechanical' thing that stands out to me with Michael Phelps coming off the wall is how deep he is compared to the other swimmers. I had just learned about 'getting under the backwash' which is the stream/flow of water that follows you into the wall from my swim coach, and then saw Phelps win one of his medals where he went into the wall maybe a half body length behind who ever was next to him, and he came up a body length in front. In the interview after, he commented about how he was able to get down under the backwash. This is not mentioned, covered or explained, in any flip turn video I have ever seen.
Wow! It makes total sense. I got back to swimming after a long time and now I can really see how much physics there is in it. Third law, how much you can push behind you is equal to how much you are going foward First law, how much you can maintain. I remember in a few classes in college teacher told me to hold up longer to the speed of my jump and not straight up swim, since swimming right away only causes friction that actually de-acelerates your jump/speed. Only that tip helped in like, whole seconds. And now this one. I was getting back and experimenting the turns swimming in my back and I was noticing being a little below the surface was feeling more hydrodynamic... And it makes so much sense, the current that is following you is holding you back. You have the whole pool for yourself, you should use it to your advantage. Thanks so much for the tip and explanation!!
I also wonder if starting deep allows him to take advantage of his buoyancy in order to gain extra velocity swimming slightly "up"? He would also technically have to cover more ground...but maybe the tradeoff is worth it, or maybe the swimming up using buoyancy theory I just came up with pales in comparison to the backwash theory you mentioned...?
The best underwater I ever saw him do was his final turn in the 400m Medley at Beijing. At least 8 metres under water before he came up for a breath - at the end of a freakin' 400 medley, smashing the WR by about 2 seconds. The guy has gills.
Actually I am also a swimmer who won the provisional medalist. I learned so many tips by watching Michael Phelps videos. He is the greatest swimmer ever
I love/hate swimming I love the feeling when your swimming as fast as you can and you win milliseconds before someone but I hate the feeling you get when you taking your start knowing that it’s going to beep and your heart is just beating out of your chest
"What a big turn! What a big turn!" I've been searching for that clip forever. It was posted on Twitter briefly, then disappeared behind a paywall I guess. Thanks for posting.
Phelps' turns are a masterclass in speed and precision. Watching him approach the wall, he’s already calculating the perfect angle and timing to explode out of the turn. His body stays streamlined, minimizing drag, and he gains serious momentum with that powerful dolphin kick off the wall. It’s no wonder he shaves off precious milliseconds every time! These turns aren’t just transitions-they’re game-changers that keep him ahead. For any swimmer looking to improve, studying Phelps’ turns is a must.
My friend is like Micheal Phelps. During a medley, she was swimming backstroke and everyone else popped up at 7-8 meters while she popped up at 14 meters and almost got us disqualified! She risked it so much! At least we won the relay thanks to her.
Underwater swimming must have Ryan Lochte also. Crazily powerful dolphin kicks and very smart swimming techniques. For Phelps, I would put: 1/ 400m Medley Olympic trials 2008 the last leg. 2/ 200m Free Melborne 2007 3/ the 1st one in the clip
I just recently won a bronze medal for 400yd relay. Ive never been so happy before, i wish i could be as good as phelps someday Edit: for my highschool championship btw.
if u look closely at his lead off in the 4x100 free relay in Beijing 2008, his turn at the 50m mark helped him to get from 7th to like 3rd position......it should've been in this video too.
Yeah I like that too but In my view these are the top 3. you should also check out the 4x100 free pan pacs 2014. He was 6th or 7th at the turn and came back 1st.
I think phelps vs Peter van den hoogenband (?) 200 freestyle at, I think Athens?, is a great one. VDH would pull ahead on the swim each length, but phelps would overtake him on each turn underwater. Until the final turn where phelps just switched it up another gear and popped out a good distance in front. Pieter had no answer and I think was a bit gobsmacked when interviewed after the race. Phelps is a legend.
So umm SwimStrength I have a question, say if I’m a Foreign Athlete and I train in the US for the next upcoming olympics but I want to represent my country how would that work do I have to race in my country for the Qualifying Time? Or like could I race in the US and Qualify there?
Yeah my thoughts too. I don't understand the use impossible and then show some one doing it. It is like people have no knowledge what impossible means.
And that’s why ladies and gentlemen why your turns and stream line are so god damn important. One of the reasons why Phelps was able to catch everyone on the turn was basically of his badass butterfly kick
Kick on the side. That will improve your upsweep and downsweep of dolphin kick. World class swimmers are able to generate same amount of force in the upsweep as the downsweep.
i think what makes him win every time is how long he stays underwater on his push offs, as you can see he returns to the surface a few seconds after the other swimmers
every swimmer at Olympic, even national level can stay long underwater, but too long gets you disqualified, it's a very tricky thing to do. What he did is special but it's not merely dolphin kicking under water, everyone at that level could do it the whole 50 meter without surfacing, it's how to maximize the advantage (dolphin kick underwater is the single fastest move human can do in swimming) without breaking rules
Comment down below who is better in underwaters than Phelps.
caeleb dressel?
Kris Humphries

dressel of course
Marc Somadjaja dressel is dead

Damn me too my arms get tired too early slowing me down

In the comming years this is how swimming will evolve. People will swim underwater the maximum 15 meters each and every turn.
They already done it, watch how dolphin kick became popular
It was so much more awesome before they put the 15 meter rule in. Dudes were going 30-35m underwater the first two turns.
