As someone who has experienced it first hand and has had the ice break underneath me to the point of falling through, it’s real and it’s terrifying, obviously I’m ok but you won’t catch me going ice fishing anymore unless there is an exceptionally gorgeous girl involved

I ice fish on lake Michigan in the UP. That sound is constantly happening. Something really dangerous you should cover is pressure cracks. Some are invisible and some can be 10 feet high. It's when millions of tons of ice crash into the ice solid from shore to however far out and it creates a seem. Pressure under the ice creates flow on the seem which keeps it from freezing over. You can go from 2 feet of ice to a 10 foot gap of open water barely or not visible at all. Many deaths occur on an annual basis because of this.
I hear that sound all through winter from the first good snow until mid March here in Southern Minnesota where people go glancing all winter long on the ice that's covering the lake.
