She wrote this song over 4 years.. such a masterpiece.
The album version is even more vocally reserved than this live version. Equally as emotional. Lambs love these Rosie O’Donnell interviews and performances. She also did Petals on this show a couple years later. Another Mariah recommendation would be Vision of Love (2005 BET Blueprint).

@@CJWahanui Aside from her Oprah interview about her Memoir, I always feel like Oprah isn't really listening and eager to cut her off talking over her. Which I don't understand because during her interview with her and Whitney, she was much more respectful to Nippy and allowed her to finish her fucking sentence and would respond to it as opposed to going off on her own tangent.

Edit: This will kinda blow your mind but the song I hated the most/didn't enjoy much from her was The Roof 😳 I actually enjoyed Mariah's parts but the rap part in the Official Video wasn't it, but now I mess with it although I prefer the solo version 😅
It's bittersweet that such a brilliant and beautiful soul got hurt many times since she was a child, but like she said "... To anyone who's ever told me a song i wrote helped save your life, i thank you, because you saved mine."

I'm glad you love Butterfly as much as I do! This is one of my favorite songs on that album. "Still I feel like a child as I look at the moon, maybe I grew up a little too soon.." line gets me everytime. 😢
The writing process of Close My Eyes happened when Mariah was leaving the house she used to live with her ex husband, Tommy Mottola. She even jokes when referring to this house as "sing sing" because that was the only thing she used to do and the only thing she grasped to it when living there. When thinking about the song, she first was reflecting on her life and the first part of the song represents that. What we could certainly say is that Mariah was exposed to lots of things that most children do not encounter while growing up, so Close My Eyes is definitely a compilation of the emotions and situations this woman has encountered throughout her life. Also, Mariah has said that this was the first song that she started the writing process, stopped it and came back to it after a while. So this song is a representation of some years of growth and maturation.
If I’m not mistaken, it took her years to finish writing this song.
The song is actually a few seconds longer. It's a very personal lyrics. It's kinda picture of herself and her childhood. I think somehow Mariah will always have a song that is a mirror of some moment of our lives. That's why I stan!

She may have been writing about watching her sister prostitute herself. Later she writes in this song, “I left the worst unsaid”. Huh. Her music. Her words. And now we are getting, Her Story. This is one of her most beloved songs. She actually sings it in head voice in the original record but in here she belts most of it. Lyrics are perfect and the producing of the song is unique you don't hear many songs like that. The bridge is very unique. The way she sings it makes it sound a bit like Daydream album. Her whisper register became more evident after Butterfly so the original version fits better with 4th of July, The Roof and Beautiful ones.
Even hoarse her voice is angelic!

One of my favorite most personal songs from her.
Hi! In the studio version she originally used all falsetto/whisper voice while here she did mostly in chest voice here
And I understandood why she rathered that way because when I tried to cover it it was really difficult to sing in all falsetto and around the near end my voice was kinda tired already!

And oh yeah Mariah does thrive more in an intimate setting. She is more comfortable and more vocally relaxed especially when she is singing for the lambs. Glad you were able to notice that.

Butterfly is my fave album of hers too, followed by Daydream. It's also Mariah's favorite album and Close My Eyes happens to be one of her favorite, if not her favorite, song she's ever recorded

Butterfly may not have been the "Blockbuster " that Daydream or Music Box were BUT it is her MAGNUM OPUS. Mariah herself also stated that the Butterfly album is her personal favorite ( and arguably she was at her most vulnerable after her divorce from Tommy Mattola)
Imagine Walter Afanasieff had the nerve to say the album sounded unfinished production wise. He was and is salty Mariah ditched him I guess. The album is a masterpiece

This song saved my life. Literally. I played this song over and over again. I cried everytime. More so tears of relief because I felt like “Finally!!! Someone who feels like exactly the way I do.” NOW, Jack, Jack, Jack! Lol 😂 May I suggest not pausing during live performances. It’s kinda takes away from the feeling of the moment.
