      LOL! Yeah the only damage to the scabbard was from the eel having it in it's mouth LOL! My camera assistant thought it was so funny and couldn't stop laughing! It was a big eel. proper "survival" scenario....... eel steals your only knife and you have no choice but to swim down and get it back LOL! Hence the crazy camera action whilst i came up got a breath and went back as asp to get it before it tried again to drag it off! The AMF has passed the "eel test" LOL!

    On the subject of the knife, that's a cleaver, axe, and machete in one. A very nice tool. I just read your description and had to laugh. Maybe I immediately liked this knife because I'm 54 years old and carried three different knives on my belt when I lived in FNQ (Cooktown/Cedar Bay/ Mt Amos) in the early 80s. Everyone carried at least one knife back then up there. Back in the day when common sense was practiced by lawmakers and we were allowed to carry them in town as well as in the bush.

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  6 років тому +2

      LOL, yeah I did think about several of my viewers when I wrote that. We are the same age mate! Yes I remember the days of common sense. It's a joke now as in non- existent basically, especially re knife carry in rural and outback regions here. I mean, even for folders??? and multitools. What's the story there? We have the media with nothing better to do to blame for this crazy hysteria prevalent around a lot of the world now. That's why in our neighbouring countries no one bats an eyelid if you are carrying a machete etc (Ok as long as doesn't mean running down a street with it raised above your head! LOL)

    Must admit, I wish I had bought a Gerber BMF when they were available. Nice to see a very modern knife clearly based on that design.

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  6 років тому +2

      Yeah tell me about it. I had my chance 17 years ago, 2 chances in fact, even even at that time a guy I knew owned a shop who was selling one. I bought several knives from him over the years but that BMF and he also was selling a Buck survival knife, you know the one with those crazy screw in spikes; they both sat on the shelf until shop soiled as they were so expensive. And yes, the AMF is def based on that design, just looking at all the time makes me think of those knives of the past.

    • @NGMonocrom
      @NGMonocrom 6 років тому +2

      +Bush Camping Tools
      I remember that Buck knife too. The spikes were for turning the knife into a grappling hook. At first, I thought that was a joke. Looked into it further. No, Buck was serious about the whole grappling hook conversion thing. Haven't found a single account of anyone crazy enough to attempt to use the knife as such.

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  6 років тому +2

      Yeah! he owner of this particular shop also told me that and they actually sold lots of climbing equipment (I was there to buy more climbing stuff and he was trying to sell it to me LOL but way too dear at the time. I don't think I'd trust my life on it either as a hook. I wonder why though it would be easy to make a guard, such as in this AMF meet UIAA standards for climbing in that it could possibly be threaded with climbers static cord and used as a typical climbing chock/stopper/nut in a dire emergency LOL!

    Thats a hefty chunk of steel. Not surprised that it performed as well as it did!

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  6 років тому +1

      Hi glad to see you around! Yes indeed, it is a big chunk of steel! I was surprised actually at how heavy it feels but it wields just fine. I like it that the grip is very comfortable and that's important for all positions on such a large knife with lots of leverage back to the hand for less stress. Also the fact that there is no finger choil, so we get a maximum cutting edge. I'm going to be making a short video soon on this aspect of finger choils Vs no finger choils and what that means in terms of real usage. I have several knives with choils and some when working hard, necessitate the need for gloves (if you are using the choil)- I prefer not to. But for example with this Extrema Ratio AMF, I can get very close to the start of the blade, safely and hence deliver lots of power in my carving stokes and that (not so obvious from the video) rounded grip profile makes it very very comfortable without gloves.

    • @turtlewolfpack6061
      @turtlewolfpack6061 6 років тому

      Bush Camping Tools I personally cant stand choils on most knives and very much prefer none!

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  6 років тому +1

      Yeah, they do take up the space of a cutting surface. Mind you I have a few knives with choils but never use the choil in reality as I once cut myself LOL and I think in a very early video I even said something about not putting fingers close to the blade LOL!

    I'm on the fence with getting this knife, I absolutely love it, both the style (gerber bmf is my dream knife but is so rare lol) and the fact that it's made in my country, however the only thing I'm concerned about is whether or not the screw that holds the handle together comes loose after hard work/batoning/chopping. I've seen another review on this one by a popular knife channel and the handle does loosen up on their end after hard use. Of course it's easily fixable but I'd have to go around the bush with an allen key on me lol. Is that actually an issue or is the other review overblowing it?

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  Рік тому

      Truly I'm not sure what they did with this knife but I belted the hell out of it outside of what I shot on camera and there was never an issue with at screw coming loose. The tension on the screw is actually partly due to the elastomeric properties of the forprene because one can screw it down hard and it slightly compresses the Forprene and this in turn exerts some force upon the screw. What will move slightly but will never loosen is the guard when bashing the knife into hardwoods since it butts up against the forprene as well and Forprene is elastomeric (even hard compound/high shore rated Forprene). At first this worried me but then I realised it didn't do anything. Its a big knife and very versatile, just look what I did with it. If it's a big thing then one could use a non-permanent Loctite, eg 242 (the blue colored one). Hope that helps.
      BCT

    • @PTSDexplosion
      @PTSDexplosion Рік тому

      @@BushCampingTools thanks for the info. About the guard, how much does it move?
      Does it get permanently loose after doing hard work or does it rattle or does it only move slightly if you shake the knife or only if you rock the guard back and forth with your fingers?

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  Рік тому

      @@PTSDexplosion If you belt it hard, you can hear it move but this is only because of a ever so slight flexibility of the forprene. If they made it a really super high shore hardness, it would defeat the shock absorbing abilities of the forprene, so useful for such a big bladed knife. Once one stops belting it, it is firm in place and not loose at all. Trust me it isn't a problem at all. For example if they press fit the guard then this could not happen but then one would need to be careful cleaning the knife as any crap under the press fit could cause corrosion and go unnoticed. So if you were to shake the knife it would not move at all. Unfortunately it's not with me right now otherwise I'd make a quick video and show you. So yeah, it's def not permanently loose and you can not rock the guard with your fingers unless you have super strength plier finger grip LOL-from following my "grip strength" videos-LOl naw just joking here!

    Excellent video mate. Just an armchair question. How come you use "thick" blades out in the jungle? I all ways hear/read about poeples and there machetes.

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  6 років тому +1

      Hi mate thanks for saying that. No that is a totally valid question! Most work in the jungle environment is with machetes, Parangs or Goloks or similar types of knives, which are on the most part a bit thinner for sure. The people that are using them certainly don't use Bowie style big thick knives LOL. I was using this location simply to test out it's versatility to other tasks that one might have to do, as I guess it's marketed towards this "Survival knife thing". You'll notice too that where I was walking in this "jungle" it wasn't very dense around at lower levels and hence too no need for a machete, no paths to blaze etc. (see my other recent video on a machete in some very dense scrubland). You can obviously chop down small trees with it but I'm not sure it would be my choice for taking with me climbing up a coconut to chop off the nuts as it's reach is not long enough and of course not designed for it.

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  6 років тому +1

      I'm hoping to use it on some coastal locations where a thicker blade can come in handy for say levering abalone from rocks or large molluscs to eat along with splitting drift wood up. As the axe will be great at the latter, it would suck as a makeshift diving knife.

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  6 років тому +1

      Oh forgot to say, yeah "thinner for sure but also a lot broader". Although a thin machete like a Tramontina would, IMHO be too light to chop a palm tree down, these types of light weight machetes are only good for softer and thinner materials. Thicker parangs (which really come in all sorts of shapes and designs depending upon who makes it and where in the tropics it has been made and or goloks etc can be better for harder fibrous objects and they are generally shorter than machetes.

    Another great video. I love the size and shape of the knife, build quality looks amazing as per ER’s other offerings. Good chopper and looks to be a capable slicer too. For the work you’re doing with it, how does it compare with the TASK J?

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  6 років тому +1

      Hi Darren, thanks. Well this knife handle is a departure from the usual styled handles of their other knives. I think they had to make it like that to as the tang is the same profile for the entire length basically. But it's very comfy and offers more vibration absorption than their standard ones (Which are great too) but of course there is a lot more Forpreene present in the AMF's grip. It's a lot heavier than the TASK J and of course longer too. The scabbard weighs nothing and probably wouldn't take a beating like the scabbards of the more obvious military models, ie with those hard plastic inserts within the Cordura/Nylon material. But it's still a good scabbard. That eel's teeth managed to abrade some of the protective webbing over the stitching but hey, that's what happens when an eel tries to nick your knife LOL! I'm still loving my Extrema Ratio Task J though. The TASK J won't chop down palms LOL like the AMF but then they are both totally different designs and end uses, but you know my take on the TASK J, I think it's a solid performer and I wouldn't have a problem with it too as a "survival knife" that's strapped to my side. But yeah the AMF is not a light knife. The thing I like about the Task J is that the spine profile is thick where it needs to be and thin where it needs to be and cuts very well. The edge of the Task J is a little different to the grind on the AMF and the AMF's grind is a little steeper and I guess they did that so it might take more "abuse" as a "survival" knife but of course end users could put any edge on it they wished. Maybe I'll do something about all the ER's I've got and put some data in a table for comparison of what, at least for me, I find them good at. But yeah, the TASK J is still going out in the pack on camping trips.

    • @dazzpol
      @dazzpol 6 років тому

      It does look the business. I’m resisting pulling the trigger on this one! The TASK J is a great knife and there is little I’d change about it, but I really fancy something with a bit more heft! If I spend £300+ on this knife my mrs will want your address as it will be your fault! 😉

      Listen mate, I'm facing divorce already over all of the bloody damn knives hanging around LOL! But seriously, I might have to disappear into the bush so she can't find me LOL! Yes it does look the business for sure and I guess it's one way to to get this retro styled knife if one can't or doesn't want to pay the huge prices the Gerber BMF now commands as a collectors item. Foot note: I was told I'd be divorced when i bought a Strider 17 years ago now, when she found out and whenever it makes an appearance and she sees it she still has a go at me about it.

    • @dazzpol
      @dazzpol 6 років тому

      Right! Forewarned is forearmed!! I’ve now invested in this beast and it’s awesome. The handle is far more comfortable than I expected and the guards do not hinder it at all.
      If they had milled a small piece out of the spine as in the selvans to facilitate ferro rod use it would have it all.
      Mine didn’t come as sharp as my other ER knives and that is a work in progress. The last thing and only letdown for me is the bead blast finish, it scratches up and wears smooth in places that kinda takes from the aesthetics a bit. But it’s an outdoor knife made for heavy use and it looks cool with wear and tear (I look at it as memories etched in the steel lol)

    • @BushCampingTools
      @BushCampingTools  6 років тому

      You know mate this is the crazy thing, I couldn't find a damn standard out there for hand sizes and was actually hoping someone (you're the first) to comment about this. I know that if I (in Australia) try and put on say size 7 rubber/work/bike gloves, then no chance; size 8 of the same can be a tight fit; 8.5 is ok and sometimes size 9 but sometimes size 9 is swimming on me. Apparently some measure it as the distance from the top of the wrist to your longest finger? In this latter case, that would make me an 8 to 8.5 (as in inches long to the finger tip).Anyway, maybe you saw some black dots on the blade? I put them there so people could gauge the scale of this knife to my hands during the video.

      Hey yeah I saw it. I did actually surf their site, amazing knives! And yes, the look of the Krypton does catch my attention. I sent them an email but they are probably at Eurosatory this week in Paris so I don't expect to hear from them until after this week at least. Yes, the Krypton looks good and the only reviews I can find are by themselves and few independent ones and none in English for the "dummies" who can only speak English LOL, like myself!

    is too big for the maneuver, uncomfortable in the grip.. I have the Jungle King 1 of Aitor... and so very similar to the AMF... they are very heavy and usually performs the work of hand axe. Thanks for show in reality how knives work.

    Check the size of the tiny threade bar in a barrel connector in the tang. It is tiny. For such a good tang they ruin the knife with poxy connectors. Pointless! In combat or hard use, it will break!

      Hi there. Not quite. How it works is this, the resistive force to prevent the allen bolt from unscrewing is achieved by the elasticity of the Forprene, in this way; when the allen bolt is screwed down upon the solid stainless steel butt cap, the base of the batt cap forces itself upon the Forprene (not the end shaft of the tang). One can screw the butt cap down very hard but there will still be Forprene between the base of the butt cap and the end of the tang. let's suppose a hard hit comes straight down upon the butt cap. The shock will be diverted not into the end of the tang but absorbed into the Forprene. if that force is great enough, the Forprene may fail, however, that force would be way in excess of say using the butt to smash a armoured window or even in attempts to ingress into a laminated glass window (extremely difficult anyway and not the tool of choice here anyway but a proper fireman's axe or similar device for such work-IMHO).There is no danger of distorting either the allen bolt or the end of the tang like this. Now if the butt was to be swung in an arc into an immovable object, yes it would indeed exert a bending force against the allen bol shaft. I doubt it would shear an A2 or even a 300 series steel bolt but if deformed (bent) then this would not render the knife unusable, albeit the end bolt may be bent. I can't think of why someone would swing a knife like this, or any knife. If we talk about real uses such as breaking glass then a simple tungsten or hardened steel point will work much more efficiently for this job, not any knife butt because the crack needs to be propagated from a small point in order to release the forces within the glass (if tempered glass).
      If used as a persuader type of tool, then any human head will yield to it long before any damage could be done to the butt of this knife. I would call a situation where I would utilise this knife in such a way a "combat situation" IMHO. Now in terms of combat if I go by what my mates have told me that either are or were in the military, no one is going in their opinions to be carrying such a large knife as the AMF for combat, a least for those Aussie soldiers, I can not speak for your combat experience of course and it may be totally different of course. So I guess to summarize, I do not believe it to be as weak a "link" as you suggest. If you look at their knives listed a combat capable then you will see that the fixing bolt is no where near the butt end and the tang protrudes (such as the Fulcrum series of knives) and bashing this end will have zero effect upon the integrity of the knife. The AMF is more of a Retro survival type knife but not a combat knife. That's where if we were to look at a Venn diagram, then many good combat knives could function (I've written about this extensively) as a survival knife too- survival in any situation; however, a "survival type knife" may not function as a combat knife. Not sure if you saw my old blog on the strip of the AMF but just in case u didn't u can see it here and see what I mean about the butt cap.

      Hi, thanks for watching. IMHO I would never select it as a service knife, way too big (long and heavy), hazardous as is for jumping; need tools to pull it apart. My active mates would laugh at it and I know they aren't carrying anything with such a huge blade. Of course if you are enlisted and or have been and carried/carry something else then fair play to you as well.
      It was merely designed as a kind of tribute to the long since discontinued Gerber or similar design. I've seen up to USD$360 starting bids!; on Ebay for that old model. personally I have no problems with what I could achieve with this type of knife in the wilderness and this video is just to show that nothing else.
      I appreciate you comments, as it's entirely up to the individual whether they think they like something or not, I can only demonstrate stuff here and since I don't work for them or any cutlery manufacturer in anyway shape or form, that's all I can say do is a demo of it's intended or otherwise purposes laid out by the manufacturer or based upon my personal experience and/or those of other who may also possess the same equipment and actually use it.
      Unfortunately, I've been involved in several survival situations, some were on the rescue side (no knives of any kind were ever involved) and some situations did involve knives (of which none cost like anything like any knives seen on UA-cam by any channel I can assure you) and not for use as weapons-(if you are interested you can read about it in on of my blogs). Unfortunately the "survival" thing has gotten out of control on the social media and maybe it's partly due to the yearning from human's genes to get back to some close to primitive state-away from computer screens and boring office jobs-LOL!
      Most people (civilians) in my experience today, rarely venture away from the marked trails and hence would never have a reason to own and or use such a knife unless purely as a collectors item.
