Julie Andrews - The Singing Princess, 1949

In 1952, the film was dubbed into English, retitled The Singing Princess and starring Julie Andrews in her first and only film role and also the first and only venture into voice-over work in the 1950s. The film was reissued in 1967, at the height of Andrews' subsequent Hollywood career. The film went unreleased on VHS until the mid-1980s and on DVD until 2005.

Undoubtedly one of my favorite aspects of this work is the animation behind Amin’s black cloak. The way all of these characters are animated they feel like living ink beings. But they found a means to make Amin’s cloak flow in the wind as he flew in a way that made both him and any he carried off appear literally liter than air. Beyond that I was just mesmerized with the way they blended the dark shades of Amin and the cloak together so they looked like they were entwined together.

This is the first italian animated film, the original tile is "La Rosa di Baghdad". It's also the first ever italian film in general to be made in Technicolor

She is like the English version of Diana Durbin! She could have had a great career in opera if she had chosen to through extended studies in Italy. i believe that was the initial plan by her parents.

This animated feature made in Italy ( as I gather) is something for study for Animators on several levels. There are some excellent scenes along with many others that fall short of what they could have been. This inconsistency was hinged on the particular talents of that particular Animator who worked on that scene. But there are some distracting scenes such as those using back and forth cycles to stretch out them out that produce mechanical action, some with hitches in the movement. There are pacing issues in spots with scenes lasting too long, with others not carried through enough and cut too soon. The coconut hitting the head of the guard is one such example where the "comedy" is not carried to completion since there is no reaction after the splash. There are timing issues in a good share of the animation, and camera errors which could have been cut, others done as retakes such as out of register cels or images popping off such as the flames on torches. While the style is reminiscent of Russian animation, the execution is not as accomplished and consistent, unfortunately. The Russian feature, THE SNOW QUEEN is an example of this style that is better controlled and consistent.
While European storytelling tends to be at a slower pace, this feature with al of its beauty meanders a bit too much and does not remained focused enough on the central character. For 1949, the techniques are a bit primitive compared to what was being produced in The United States and other countries. This was a noble effort that appears to have been a challenge to direct, as there appear to be directorial problems throughout the feature. But it is worth studying because much can be learned from this.

The copyright at 1:12 says MCMLXVII, which is 1967, so this is presumably that reissue.
(I think you can delete "and only" from before "film role"!)
