Can somebody tell me why index fossils need to be organisms that live for a very short period of time? I'm kind of confused. Thank You!

Well because index fossils are used as markers that can be used to help figure out the age of other fossils much more easily, if they lived for a long period of time then their fossils are also spread out on a larger age range which means it won't be as accurate of a marker, the shorter the period of time is the less spread out the age range of the fossil is which means it is much easier to put an age or shorter age range on it

Yeah, this video explained exactly what I came here for, so If it wasn't helpful to you try to find a video that explains the stuff you really need to know, because this video did exactly that. This video wasn't misleading or anything, it showed exactly what I was trying to learn.
