Edit: as a member of the Fallout 4 (and other games) modding scene, i at least have all of mine on the green side of things lol. 3D models for guns and Sound Design is my thing, but i know quite a few people on the larger side of the modding community.

5:40 The whole EV thing is. You usually do not need a personal vehicle, if you live in a dense settlement. And you usually have the roof area for a massive solar plant and space for a battery if you don't. So theoretically, if people were up for it, most of their charging would be their own solar.
And whenever you need to use a quickcharger somewhere else, it's on average still less carbon emissions than a ICE.
And yes, having your own 10kW power plant on the rooftop is expensive, as is the battery to soak that excess up, but EVs (like organic food) is a luxury product in our world. :D

Currently, if I take the bus, it's 2.5hrs to work. For reference, it's a 20-40m drive depending on traffic. I would have to get on the bus around when I currently wake up. Plus it's really pricey here, even compared to gas. I don't know if you grasp how awful the driving situation is in the States.
@@hmnhntr Oh, I am aware about the US situation, regarding cars and public transportation, but the solution is a political shift, so do the democracy thing you are so proud of.
The whole thing has to change from a nationwide perspective, not an individual one.
The problem starts with people making fun about EVs being powered by fossil fuels, when all the changes that would make the situation better are major infrastructure or legislative efforts, rail systems, non-fossil power generation (hopefully at some point fusion and renewables, until then even nuclear I would consider valid, but burning coal is not the way), zoning laws, actually good government housing, etc.
In my personal opinion, good public transportation is next to affordable healthcare and education top of the list for what a government should provide. If it can't do that, people automatically have a less equal start in life, which then snowballs.
Just as an example for what I expect from a small town (~10-20k pop), I can get from my house to the next major airport in Frankfurt 100km away train with my 10$-equivalent monthly pass within 2 hours and 2 transits, or I can pay 20-30$ and be there in an hour with a short tram ride and a direct high speed line. Of course this is not making money, and any deficit is covered by the state, but it is a public service.
And it's not like the US could not afford it, even if we assume the whole of the US is as densely populated as Europe, French train net + German bus/tram/metro network, would only run about 1 trillion in revenue, for 333million people that averages, 3000$ a year, or ~250$ a month (and it doesn't need to be that dense, 1/4 of the US is federal land and then there is probably another 2/3 that is truly rural [where cars are required, and where you have the space for wind and solar energy], but even this completely oversized network is not absolutely absurdly priced).
Yes, you need to build the infrastructure first, but the running costs are relatively low.
And it's not a tomorrow solution, but the best time to start is yesterday, the second best time is now.
Also, do not, I repeat, DO NOT, have private companies run it, that will just balloon costs. It's not designed to make money. It's supposed to break even. :D
Also, bus+train only need to beat cars, not planes, to make cars a luxury you don't require.
The US has, sorry to say that, for years bred a very self-righteous and individualistic attitude in large parts of the population. And the only way it still runs is on the exploitation of it's own labor force, see the whole multiple jobs and living wage discussion.
And from that perspective car travel trumps everything, car trips avoid contact to "the poor", so who needs trains, busses or a walkable neighborhood.
And yes, the transport in Europe is not perfect, but my generation avoids buying cars, unless it's for fun or specifically work (not commute). Half my friends don't even have a driver's license and some only because their parents bullied them into getting it, but haven't driven since the exam.
Okay this got very rantey and tangent-heavy, I just really dislike putting "you need a car" as a fact, when the why is political decisions people are not complaining enough about.
