I love that you saved that little seedling! Repotting season brings me a lot of joy! I can't wait to get dirt under my nails when I repot my house plants in the spring and start the garden next month 😊
IT's always nice to get some volunteers. I hope those two will do well! I also had a repot these days were there was still some clay/mud kind of soil in it and it also didn't have that many roots in that area!
Thanks. I have a hard time not digging those volunteers up and potting them along. I get some nice trees that way and sometimes a big surprise! Last year I scored 3 Pagoda dogwood, 1 western redbud, 4 scotts pines and a Blood Good japanese maple. They aren't giants but they could be! Glad to see the ideas for the one-sided elm. I have run into that more than I have the "good" root spreads. Thanks.
I love that you bring focus to these younger trees. I’m finding it more and more rewarding when I start my trees from seed, or find a tree pop up in my yard and watch them develop over the years, getting to learn the quirks from each species. Also if I make a mistake on a young tree it’s a bit easier to take then by learning from mistakes on old trees. 😊
That little spruce looks like it has some subtle movement at the base, and branch structure already starting - it wants to be a Mame!! It will be so exciting watch this transition into one of your mini pots, eventually.
Well Nigel, since repoting season has started in February, maybe you will have enough time for all repotings this year. Can’t wait to follow it along ^^
The natural soil for us, in the east Bay Area (California), is more tough clay than this. My dad once had to do some irrigation work in our yard and said he had to dig through pure clay.
Thanks Nigel. It was quite nice seeing how you deal with a one-sided root base. It is a common case to have when one grows trees from the seed. I have a question that can be a video idea. It suits well the current repotting season. What are the pros and cons of bonsai soil reuse? It would be nice to hear what is your opinion on this topic. I find a very little information about it. Thanks in advance.
Contamination from bad microbes and unwanted weeds is the biggest downside…I think. You can let your soil dry and bake/sterilize it in an oven. Or a less perfect(and cheaper) way I prefer. Is after drying, putting your soil on a tarp or plastic and let it get hot in the sun(on a hot summer day) afterwords you can always re-sift your soil. Curious on Nigel’s thought on this!
My gut tells me that a lot depends on the age of the older soil...if it's from a planting that's more than a year old, I personally wouldn't reuse it...
Wouldn’t that little seeding be perfect for a miniature pot? Depending on vigor though, might require more frequent repotting than seems to have been your recent practice.🤔😉Thanks as always.
Just a thought Nigel, those one sided root bases are perfect for jamming into the edge of a landscape planting. Just saying.
Great advice on keeping the little seedling alive. Thank you!
These recent repotting videos have really gotten me psyched about the arrival of spring. Thanks, keep growing
Yes, I love watching the trees grow in the summer after all the repotting is done!!!

That Elm is on it's way to becoming great! I love the little seedlings too! If anything, I can plant them outside in the yard if I have too many.
Thanks Marysol!!
Wow! Cold your way. After this nice repot, you deserve a nice hot cup of tea tonight to take the chill out of the bones.
Nice little spruce seedling. A mini. Super cool!
I liked the cute one👍.

Thanks Nigel...I have been potting my volunteer conifers the same way nut will now add the layer of sand...Good idea...Thanks for sharing...
It seems to work well, this little tree is growing!!
Cool video Nigel
Thanks for sharing my friend👊🏻
Glad you enjoyed it!! Thanks!!
Thank You Nigel!!
Thanks Scott, have a great day!!
In anticipation of repotting season I found, and purchased, a restaurant waiters tray (as seen on The Bonsai Zone). Thanks Nigel. 👍🏻
Awesome, they do work well!!
That is good info - the small trees on a tray of sand - will definitely do that - 🙂🙃

So true!!

Yes, I can't wait to get the new little pots fired!!
i love finding trees here and there. im always looking around. the wife thinks im crazy. love that tip about the sand.
I can't wait to see this one! The tiny fairy plants are so fun.
That's such a cool showcase of how roots need air.
Thanks.
Welcome!
Mantap👍👍👍
The duck's and chickens are getting great protein...😂😂
Beautiful

I hope so thanks to the warm weather this year!!
Gracias por mostrar una poda de raíces tan complicadas.
¡¡Mucho más por venir, gracias!!
My glassed in sunroom has too much of a temperature swing in the winter. Otherwise, I'd have it packed with trees..
👍👌👌

@@dkstott29 I only do this with non-organic soil

Yes, absolutely!!
I wonder, would it help to smear some rooting hormone on the side that is missing roots or it wouldn't make a difference?
Foist
I have never seal the root cuts, they seem to heal well without it.
Hopefully all will go well, roots do seem to heal well without cut paste!
Do you re use the soil coming out of the pots Nigel?
Generally I don't reuse soil for my bonsai. The old soil goes into the garden!
You could have made a few more pots with all the clay you've raked out of the roots! Lol
Lol, yes indeed!
Harsh fate awaits you if you are Nigel's tree. You either bend (become bonsai) or die :)
