- In celebration of the Marine Band's 215th anniversary, John Williams, the Academy Award-winning composer and conductor laureate of the Boston Pops, conducted the band in a fanfare he wrote specifically for the ensemble's anniversary. The work is aptly titled "For 'The President's Own.'"
On July 3, 2013, the band rehearsed with Mr. Williams and recorded the new band work. Following the recording session, Marine Band Director Colonel Michael J. Colburn talked with Mr. Williams about the piece and his experience working with "The President's Own."
Williams has a special relationship with "The President's Own," having conducted the group on its 2003 and 2008 anniversary concerts in Washington, D.C., and in 2009 during a tour concert at Royce Hall in Los Angeles.

john williams is unreal in his talent...bernstein, gershwin, copland, williams, sousa..true composers that all define the American soundtrack.
Absolutely. Revitalized and popularized symphonic music as champion of the neo-Romantic. His voice is just as clear and important as any American composer.
From one of our country's flagship composers: "I hope it's turned out to be something reasonably worthy of these players." Wow...simply....wow. I'm so moved by this man's humility.
"Colonel, you have a hot band..."
Understatement of the century.
What an honor to play in front of that man. Legend.
+EUROPA We agree.

0:07 Big goofy grin on the bass clarinetist's face. Which is the appropriate response to Williams' music.
Here in about 4 years (after getting my Degree in Saxophone Performance @ the University of Utah) I am auditioning for "The President's Own" Marine Band! I went to a concert during the 2014 Tour at Jordan High School in Utah. I was blown away, it was my first LIVE concert of you guys!! I was emotionally thrilled, and speechless! After the tour, I had the opportunity to speak with Lieutenant Colonel Jason K. Fettig. It was a thrill to tell him how much of an honor it was to hear "The President's Own" perform here in Utah, and for me to be able to hear them in person. I was able to say how much of a difference they made. We exchanged some good words, I shared with him my musical accomplishments. I was 2nd Chair in the 2014 All-State Band, and received a Superior score at both Region and State Solo & Ensembles. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Thank you for that!
I can just imagine how Williams feels when he fears his music played the way he wants it probably even better than what he envisioned it in his head, he probably got goosebumps hearing it up on the conductor's podium.
It's always a joy to see how this legend enjoys conducting his own music. 😊
I had the opportunity and honor to play this piece at Pennsylvania's All-State Wind Ensemble in 2017 under the direction of director emeritus of the Marine Band Colonel John Bourgeois, and it is DEFINITELY a technical and musical challenge. But, as any of Williams' works, it's pure genius.
The trumpets make their parts seem just sooooo easy. They're not. Oh, it's easy enough to play the notes, but these guys do it right, with just the right balance, as Maestro Williams pointed out in the video.
I look at it this way. These guys aren't just musicians. They're Marines hand-picked to compose an elite unit.
Sure it's not an elite COMBAT unit, but if they weren't the most professional, dedicated, and skilled musicians in the USMC they wouldn't be sitting in those chairs. I can barely comprehend the amount of time and effort they've put into getting there.
John Williams always writes fantastic trumpet parts. He really understands the capability of the instrument.
Marching Band is elite COMBAT.
Charley Hibschweiler The Commandant's Own Marine Corps hah.
He's 81 and going strong. Just brilliant.
5:32 sounds like a distant echo of the three NBC chords. Very cool!
Ah - good catch tubakerry! Thanks for checking out the video!
Wonderful performance. The Marine Band is the finest of all the United States Armed Forces bands.
The Presidents own US Marine Band IS the finest of ALL the Premier Bands. AND This is coming from a Navy MAN
Bass bone player here. We have this piece coming up this summer. Thanks to Mr. Williams and "The President's Own" for showing us how it is done...
Never has a baton felt so effortless and expressive as in JW's hand.
John Williams is THE MAN!! Semper Fi, you guys rule.
Didn't get the flute spot I was hoping for but not giving up. Definitely will be spending my Saturdays at the Okinawa band hall 😍
What a lucky ensemble to have not one, but two pieces written for them by Maestro Williams. Stunning music!
This brass section is ridic. AMAZING...as John said
I got to play this with Colonel Bourgeois at Pennsylvania All-State Wind Ensemble this year; it's one of my favorite pieces for band now!
Congratulations to John Williams for the impressive work and The President's Own Marine Band for the excellent interpretation. Thank you very much for the video
What a blessed and generous relationship - the finest band in the country and one of the preeminent composers of our time. I can’t imagine how thrilling it must be to share space and make art with two powerhouse musical forces!
OMG....
Like say what!!!!!!!!!!!!
Totally wowed by this.
Musical excellence!!!
Such a unique sound, can always tell a John Williams piece, the fanfares and xylophones are a giveaway
Bravo! Brilliant trumpet playing, and great performance all around.
Was it just me, or did you not miss the strings one single bit ;D
It wasn’t just you.
What do you mean? They're a band, not an orchestra.
A fine performance by the Marine Band. Nice work by JTW.
Would the 22 of you who actually "unliked" this video care to explain yourselves?
Thanks for uploading! Amazing piece; amazing performance; great interview!
The musicianship exhibited in this video is absolutely fantastic! Thank you all! 🇺🇸
Magic...pure magic...
Brass playing was awesome.
I can't wait to audition for this band one day.
Good luck! www.marineband.marines.mil/CareerInformation.aspx
Wow, beautiful sounds.
John is one of the few remaining "tonal" composers of note, and his music is SO refreshing as a result!
absolutely brilliant
God sent !
FANTASTIC!!
Absolument magnifique.acclamations!
FANTASTIC !!!!!!!!
I was deployed on the Kearsarge when this happened damnit!!!!!!
at 3:24, john williams daughter, jenny williams gruska (probably with her husband). she enjoys her father very much and visits all his concerts! but i would do GUARANTEED if i would be related with the maestro! :-)
That piece is working them Trumpets OUT!
I’ve never been able to figure out if John Williams loves the trumpet and wants to show off what they can do or absolutely loathes them and wants to punish them every chance he gets! 😂 It’s probably the former, but I couldn’t resist.
There is John Williams. All else is a lesser experience.
Sensational!
Do you think John has a whole closet full of grey pants, and black long sleeve turtleneck sweaters?
Wow!
I wish that there was a AB point loop feature to youtube...
"For a smoker,it's a Kent"...the Indiana Jones theme was a 1964 tv ad
The 22 people who didn't like this are deaf!
The piece was great. The next time he writes for band, I hope he exploits the upper woodwinds a little bit more.
clarineterbob I don't think he writes woodwind parts where they are in the stratosphere, I think he writes in their tonal " sweet spot" where they are able to project but at the same time, not overshadowing what the brass are doing.
As a trumpet player, I'm super impressed by the glissandos he consistently writes for flute and piccolo.
I freaking love john williams!!
He should use a band in his next movie instead of an orchestra.
achei arretado de bom!!!!
That's too much from us for Williams.
Wow, this is great! Does anybody know if it will be available for purchase?
+sepes90 its available from Hal Leonard I have just bought it for my band in the UK
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🎶🎵🎺
So someone goes to school and gets a degree in say business management and can enter the military as an officer but a degree in music doesn't get the same deal? I mean surely some if not most of these excellent musicians have degrees in music from all sorts of highly esteemed schools. Could someone please explain how/why this is?
Don't know for sure, but I would assume that business management teaches a lot of leadership, resource allocation, and personnel coordination skills that potentially translate well to a commissioned officer, while a music degree generally doesn't?
If you're talking about getting a starting bump in rank so you start as an NCO instead of E-1, IIRC it goes off credit-hours rather than degree.
How many times a week do you rehearse?
Thank God this was before Trump.
Stunning!
You take a genius composer, with a band of one of the armed services, and turn it political??? 🤦♂️
This band plays exceptionally well for ALL Presidents and the public as well, regardless of political affiliation.
