  • A Harold Lloyd compilation, and (as it were) primer, put out by Art Ross and Lloyd himself in 1962. No substitute for watching the full length, original films, of course, but useful as an introduction.

The kings of silent films, Chaplin, Keaton and Lloyd were meteors of the cinema. They all burned brightly and flamed out. The public is a fickle audience, as a moth to a light seeks a brighter bulb. They were all geniuses of their chosen field. My favorite was Keaton. But the three of them made an industry with their talents.

Alice Meagher, you’re so right. After the 3 geniuses, came Bud Abbott and Lou Costello that I discovered. Great rea of comedy for all ages. Try finding that today. Let’s also not forget the Little Rascals, they belong on this list as well

Thank you Internet/youtube/TCM. Without all these channels i wouldn't have discovered such a genius like Harold Lloyd. I love him and I lough at his gags much more than with great Charlie Chaplin. They are just 3 giants of old cinema, Lloyd, Keaton, Chaplin, long time before CGI, when tricks were real only more safe than it looked. For the building climbing, a set was built on top of the buildings. While they were high in the sky they were quite safe. Still you needed great skills and athleticism. I read that he used special shoes made for walking on a rope. He did jumps, backflips. And he looked gorgeous. He did not drink or smoke, and was married to a single wife. What's not to love about this man. Maybe just that he acted against his popularity by limiting the viewing of his films. I love you so much, Harold!

Lloyd was a master of building gags on top of gags. "We would have a gag and then a topper", he'd say. "Maybe even a topper on a topper. But if you could have a topper on a topper on a topper, that's something." A great example of "toppers on top of toppers on top of toppers" is the scene from Feet First. Still thrilling, beautifully paced, and devastatingly funny, absolutely perfect.

Without question, Lloyd made the right move in commissioning Walter Scharf to compose a score for this compilation. In particular, his music adds real drama to "Feet First" - in the original release the climbing scene was played without music.

I'm not too familiar with Lloyd's work - what picture was the one with the turkey and the disastrous car ride? That whole sequence was great, but I would definitely have expected some different and more comedy-enhancing music.

    • @josephcalderon906

+TakersMissy The turkey and disastrous car ride picture is HOT WATER(1924). which was really a three two reelers bunched into a feature, very similar to buster keaton's the three ages.(initially, three ages was going to be released as five reeler not a six-reeler).

Well, if you can find his brilliant 1989 biography/documentary entitled the third genius, (i really recommend you see it) then it'll give you a complete and utter of how he and his crew made and constructed this wonderful setup for one of the most memorable comedy climaxes or that one salient scene in movie comedy history.

Walter Scharf's musical scoring here is absolutely awful! I understand that he was personally commissioned by Lloyd himself, but I seriously doubt Scharf ever watched his films, because his music here drains all the excitement from Lloyd's films & makes this film a boring chore to view. Truth be told, I've ripped the audio from this film & play it back whenever I need help falling asleep, and it is remarkably effective.
