- Working right to left, or layout South, we need to touch up the woods edge and the edge of the pasture field we installed using teddy bear fur. For that we used static grass, and we wanted to get that in so that we can work the ballast which should be about the last scenery element one does. The area to the right of the bridge is also ballasted now. Last, we spent some time working on the pine trees for the loblolly/yellow pine tree vignette going in near the bridge.
John, I’ve been following along with this series and your scenery is incredible. Well done. The time and effort you put in pays off.
Many thanks! I appreciate it!
The static grass looks good, ties the edges in well, really makes that teddy bear fur field blend in. Good luck with the trees.
Thanks Ethan, I am definitely glad I added the static grass!
It's been a while, happy tuesday
It has! hope you've been well, and thank you!
Looking fantastic! Love the trees.
Thank you John! Cheers!
Thank you for sharing your details video as great watching every time
You’re welcome Robert- glad you enjoyed!
Great work blending that fur with static grass…tress starting to look like southern pines…good stuff
Thanks Anthony, I appreciate that 👍
John focus on lots of things all at once 😂. That makes it more fun. Depending upon what you cover the wire with on the deciduous trees a little carpenters glue on those tips will hold the super tree material well and you can apply what ever you use for your top coating 👍🏼
Very true - variety is the spice of life. Thanks for the tip with the wood glue for the tree tips!
The trees are looking awesome. They can also be addicting as well, as the skill develops. I like your idea of attaching other material to the trees as well. Try thick matte medium. They should hang right a way and blend in well. Just a thought. Cheers.😁
Thank you and thanks for the tip sir - I appreciate the advice!
The scene at 1:19 is simply spectacular. Good idea the TB stuff and static grass looks great. Awesome trees. Your scenery skills are excellent. Well done
Thank you very much!
Awesome looking trees.
Thank you!
You are definitely glutton for punishment...lol. Ive seen someone use wadded up and flattened back out aluminum foils to make bark on a tree, then painted whatever colors needed for bark. Just a thought. But the scenery looks great and maybe one of these days, we will get you into the fancy electronics. 😉 - Jason
Aluminum foil is an interesting take - I might have to mess around with that. I have seen for water, and for rock faces, but not tree bark. hmm.
Heath's livestream tonight, though he solved his issues, the frustration he experienced in the process is why I use ground throws! lol
John, on the advice of a fellow modeler (Glynn Thomas) I have used wire armature trees with smaller pieces of super trees attached and as you suspect it does work well for the final thinner branches. I used one of the tacky glues (i forget which one) but Boomer's suggestion of thick matte medium likely provides a better, more flexible solution. I did not do a great job of blending them all back to the wire branch but once they are flocked it was not noticeable. On the wire trees i made i brushed several layers of latex rubber to hide the wire but have already purchased some fiber paste to try that out. The fiber paste would probably be perfect to blend the ends of th super trees back to the wire branches. Sorry for the long post but since i am a long way away from trees i am living the scenery aspect of the hobby vicariously through others!
Thats a great thought on the latex rubber over the trunks - and I hear you on the vicariously living through others. your benchwork makes me feel the same. I have a carpenters square and a circular saw to work with, so getting cuts like you have is nigh impossible. =)
The latex worked, but i really think that Boomers approach is likely better (which should surprise no one!). Do you have a carpenters square or a speed square?
The scenery is looking good!
Thank you!
They ,the pines, are coming out fine. Boomer would be happy. Remember many things washes.
Thank you Bob!
Hey John, first off the ballast looks awesome. Great job. As for the trees. They look very much like trees in The Central VA area. About the pieces you want to adhere, try crazy glue (CA) and sprinkle with baking soda to accelerate. My personal preference is Allen’s Tacky Glue and a fine paint brush. That stuff is awesome too. I do have a question, your spray booth, I see the filter but do you airbrush in an open area or a window or something like that? I have a booth as well with the same type of filter but my train work room is what would have been a wine cooling room which is a long narrow maybe 4’ wide room finished off with sheet rock and I had shelving made to fit the exact areas I wanted to store things from trains to paints and crafting items. There is no windows and only one door. It’s also heated by a cadet wall heater but no AC as it’s in the back of the daylight basement and always cool. I guess I’m asking how do you or do you vent the booth or do you allow the filter to do your venting?
Also, I am taking your advice about laying the track and having some fun with it to see what plan I want, thanks for that. Alright buddy, have a great week and weekend. Maybe if I get back to Richmond we can meet up. I’d love to see the the layout and would also love to meet Bill who is in Short Pump. Also, if ever in the Portland area, I’d love to show you my layout. FYI, my son from Chesterfield will be her in two weeks for ten days. Very excited to see him. Again, take care.
Tim
Thanks Tim - I think something like a tacky glue or matte medium is the way to go on attaching those branches to the wire. As for my booth - I am not currently venting it outside. The window right behind the booth has an air conditioner up in the top of it so opening it is tricky. there is another window, I just need to run a vent over to that. so far I am just spraying tamiya thinned with isopropyl alcohol so I hope that isn't too awful for me! Good luck with your build - sounds like you have a uniquely shaped space to work with! Are you familiar with the channel ChessiePADiv? I recommend checking it out, Scott worked in a long, narrow space on his first layout and came up with a pretty awesome layout to fit.
@@johnarthur6302 Thanks John, I’m afraid I’ll be doing some spraying in my work room without venting too. I could always take it to the side porch/steps and spray there, I just like the idea of doing it at my workbench. I don’t know if I can add pics here of the layout or not. I have a good size room, it was a media room originally and I redesigned it and ordered benchwork to go all around including the lift gate. It’s more than 15x12’ but the cutout areas is where you get a bit of character. I designed it at 42” high. I don’t need to aggravate my back son that is great. If you know how to attach pics somehow let me know. It’s is shaping up. I just added the foam board to the top and painted that. Take care. Have a good weekend.
Tim
There a few modelers on here that are attaching little pieces of Super Trees to wire armatures.
I think we will be adding one more to the list once I figure out how! Thanks Chuck
@@johnarthur6302 Love both of your projects, old and new.
Have you tried the Golden's fiber paste yet? I went ahead and purchased a tub but haven't had the opportunity to try it out yet (working on benchwork). The trees look great!
Yes I have - that is the putty I used here on the joints between branch and trunk. User error, as I should have gone over it, stabbing with a brush for texture and instead I left it smooth. It is easy to work with though - I recommend giving it a go!
good vid thanks lee
Thank you Lee!
Find the site called Boomer Diorama and you will see a great study on how to make trees and a lot of other things...
Thanks David, you will see influences of his and other UA-camrs all over my work. His is one of my favorite channels!

I believe you watch Boomer so look how he did his trucks. Attach your little branches with that " clay".
His is one of my favorite channels and I have learned a lot from him! I used a modeling paste I saw him use, but I left it smooth and should have roughed it up a bit with a brush. Its ok, I have been able to cover it up with a little more fine turf to match the rest of the texture.
