  • Took this hike during April 9th/10th 2024. The weather was wonderful, and the scenery stunning. The snow was unforgiving: deep and mushy. During the first day it took me four hours to reach Boulder Creek Lakes from Canyon Creek: a 1.5 mile trail.
During the second day I attempted to start a bit early, but overnight it was not cold enough and the snow did not get to re-freeze - only made a small crust that cracked under the foot, with a delay, as soon as I would try to move my weight on it.
After reaching the top ridge, and having to use the crampons, decided to return as with every step I would sink in over my knees, making my advance a slow crawl, even worse than during the previous day.
Need to weight a bit more for the snow to get settled and harden.
Equipment: snow shoes, ice axe - occasional use on the descent, crampons - not really used, but would have been needed.
Music: Tim Buckley - The River
