  • Hand carving a wood sheath for a Billnas 61.1 axe. Open the full video description for more information.
The axe head is one of the smallest of the common mass produced finnish collared axes. Not mass produced any more.
    --------------------------------
Materials: Birch burl, cherry wood, fat wood, tung oil.
    --------------------------------
I did make the handle by boiling in water and using a snake head wedge - Finnish style... Just like I show in this video • Finnish collared axe r...
    ---------------------------------
    Most asked questions:
    1. why use burl and not just regular wood?
Burl makes a stronger sheath - be course it's the oppesite of straight grain wood (regular wood) is it a lot more difficult for the axe to split the sheath by mistake. Burl also just looks great. You can make the same sheath in straight grain wood - no problem, burl is just better. I did use birch burl in this case - you can use all kinds of burl.
    2. Why use fat wood for the lock?
It makes the very small piece of wood very strong, but you can use regular wood as well - no problem.

You mentioned in another video that you do all your own video work. As a professional photographer for over 40 years I just want to tell you that your not only an amazing Bushcrafter but your sense of composition and camera work are amazing also. Ill bet most people have no idea how much work and though go into each shot your make.
    Great work Rune

I agree, the burl wood makes it more beautiful. I did a similar sheath for my hook knife, but I didn't think to make a video out of it. Thank you for sharing!

Classy work indeed. Your choice to remain silent may seem a little odd at first but it becomes clearer as one watches that your interest is not about projecting yourself, but in your style of making items and living outdoors. In your recent videos Denmark looks very like parts of Scotland at this time of the year, after all the two places are almost neighbours, separated only by a relatively small sea. Nice work, as always.

People comment on you teaming up with other youtubers, I think that would be a mistake on your part. You would have nothing to gain by that. You are well above those people to begin with, in every way. Don't fix what is not broke. Don't fall for the typical media trappings that will ruin your art. You are far above those personality cults. People who suggest you team up with other youtube celebrities are entirely missing the point of your youtube project in which case has many many layers.

Tramontane Tramontane agreed!! He is just crushing it on his own with real skills not backyard bushcraft. So sick of gear reviews and guys always talking about new kit. Don't change a thing you will hit a million subs in record time doing what you are doing!

Thank you for another great video Bertram. I seem to like all the things you do :D and am very curious about your woodworking and metalworking setup. I keep trying to freezeframe and figure out uses for all your sawhorses and blacksmiths hammer and stuff but would really love a tour maybe and some explanations and examples about how you put them to good use.
Keep up the good work!!! And a Happy New Year!!!

It’s beautiful friend. Perhaps a little awkward taking so much room and could become brittle. But an absolute beautiful piece of art. Leather sheath are hard to beat. But for that particular hatchet it is gorgeous. Very nice

      Mike Stanton
I did not mean to be critical at all, it’s absolutely beautiful. I was just saying that leather is much more durable. I love this channel and I love the show. I use my aXe for very practical use, not reenactment. If I used a wood sheath it would break very quickly. That was my point, but if I had a beautiful hatchet like he did, I would make the same one he did and it would be on my wall. It’s beautiful.

Another great video as always, I've not seen a swivel cover like this used for anything other than a box before now. Using it for an axe sheath is really not one I'd have thought of, but I do like the end result. Be interested to see if you have problems over time with the lock coming loose as the pieces of wood shrink and expand etc.
