Saw the game live. Nb2 was brilliant, a positional masterstroke by Ding Liren! Gukesh would later say that he underestimated that move. What a thrilling start to this World Chess Championship! Applauding from the Philippines!😊🙏💕👏
It is funny to think of top players not wanting to allow white a space advantage by playing the French Defense and then seeing the position around move 25 where no less than four pieces invade the white camp with all white pieces defensively placed. What a masterclass in the French Defense by Ding! I am so happy he shows up strong after all the doubts around his shape. We know Gukesh will not fall over easily, either.
Thanks for the analysis Daniel. It was satisfying switching between David Howell and Jon Ludvig live and follow up with your analysis later. Wild first game, you said "Steinitz" variation which I believe is the line Levy and Keene recommended in the old book "An Opening Repertoire for the attacking club player" which many of us read. Perhaps Ding had a Chinese translation. :)
Just came home from work without having seen anything from the match - sure enough there was Daniel with an excellent presentation of the first game. Looking forward to seeing you take us through the next game tomorrow.
Ding played excellent chess, found counter play and kept his composure til the end. Looking forward to more reviews, much appreciated. The go to channel for world championship match reviews.
just legend, Minute 18:30: "Schluck-Tee-Moment" - txs for this outstanding analysis. I´m happy for Ding yet Gukesh has provided the inital spark and really set the board on fir with 7. g2-g4. respect. cheers.
According to Ding on the press conference after the game, Ding forgot his prep and just calculated over the board for 30 minutes. After move 7. This will be the match of monstrous calculators it seems.
I don't think Ding said he forgot his prep. Instead, he said he had to choose between a known line or coming up with a new idea on the spot. And he chose the latter.
"That's a good bad bishop, a bad bishop with an existential quality of goodness." Bill Hartston said something like that yonks back, and actually got into Pseudos Corner, very apropos in a French Defence game innit :-)
I hope this game was an indicator for Ding having found his composure. To be sure of that I guess we'll have to see how the next games are going. But it would have been a real shame if this World Championship match was an easy walk-over for Gukesh. We all want to see a great fight with the Ding Liren that we knew from the years pre-2021.
Best possible result for this Championship. Given Ding's form, this was pivotal and sets up the next fortnight brilliantly. Thanks as always Danny for the recap! I only caught the last half hour or so earlier so it was great to see how the whole game unfolded!
Well, what a pleasant surprise. Seems Dommarju was a little too ambitious in his first World Championship game; understandable. Now, we'll really see what he's made of. Should be a hell of a match now. I only wish I could watch some of the games live. Oh well, at least GM King will keep us informed. Thanks for the coverage!
Was getting a bit absurd for a while there, people were talking like Ding was going to forget how the pieces move just because he's had a bad year. Hoping this match is as much fun as Ding-Nepo was!
Another world championship is upon us, and it's my pleasure to see you again (and so soon!), sir. You're my go-to analyst when I don't watch the whole game live, which is most of the time.
Yet another masterful Powerplay analysis. Daniel has the gift of explaining complex ideas in such a clear, lucid, and calm way. In a comment yesterday I said that Ding may have been underestimated, and could surprise us, and so it proved with this masterpiece. Hopefully this will boost his confidence in his own remarkable abilities and we can see an epic battle between two very talented players. Ding has been so refreshingly honest, and humble in the lead up to this match. And the opening stage when he was so far behind on the clock, and Gukesh was prowling around like an Indian tiger, I confess I was fearful that Dings own fears that he “might lose badly” would come to pass. But the old saying goes “form is temporary, but class is permanent” And today Ding showed that he has CLASS and COURAGE. Fantastic start to what might prove an epic WCC battle. Brilliant game, wonderful summary, bring it on. 😎
"Totgesagte leben länger" as we Germans say. So many people saw Ding Liren getting destroyed. Thanks for the nice commentary, Daniel. Looking forward for the next videos.
Still can't understand why a great Chess Ch like this only has 108K subscribers!!! Daniel is by far the coolest. Proof he's not buying Subs like many others do hehe
The French defence is a counter-attacking opening. Korchnoi loved to play this style and I think it was a clever choice by Ding. Perfect timing for this style with all the chess world assuming Ding is the underdog here.
@lss4u A silly reply. White also plays the French if black replies 1. ... e6. I suppose in that situation you as white would play as you would in the Queens Gambit. "Okay, you play the French, I'll play the Queens Gambit." Let me know how that's works out for you.
@@sam-lz6pi Err...sort of. I normally think of the bad bishop bounce as coming off the back rank e8/d8. Nevertheless, it was fine activation of the bishop in the end.
Nerves for both, Ding forgetting his prep, Gukesh very agressive, a bit of luck for Ding and backfiring strategy for gukesh. Seems like we will get a good championship!
it's astonishing that people had Ding as the underdog in this match; he may be lower rated than Gukesh, but he's vastly more experienced. the only question for me was whether of not Ding wants to win. if he's up for it, and it looks like he is, he's going to be very hard to beat
Obviously we are here to celebrate, after 300+ days, the return of the form of Ding Liren. But Gukesh's post-match statements show an incredible maturity and perspective. He may, in the end, be beaten, but he will not wilt.
Very cunning from Ding to play the provocative French, exploiting the enthusiasm of his young opponent playing his first WC. Just compare the king positions after castling at move 31(!). I missed the game, but what a treat to find it on your channel. My favorite chess commentator by far. Thank you!
I watched Ding during the long think, and i feared he has a mental breakdown. Happy to see Ding is back, hopefully, but Gukesh today was not the guy we have seen during the year. Maybe, nerves and the lack of WCC experience. I wish both players to play at their real strength!
Am glad that The French defense finally made a great👌showing on the very highest stages of world chess , ( being unfairly described by Kasparov in the past as it being a defense for cowards LOL ) , and who better to put it to good positional / tactical use than a very calm collective Ding Liren !!! 👋
Thanks for the recap. Much appreciated. It's fitting that the only reason Ding was able to play e5 was because of the pawn sitting on g4 in front of the defenceless King. Ironic.
Very interesting comment. I have aso been wondering for a while if Ding has been conciously lulling everyone into a false sense of security. It will be fascinating to see how this plays out. In the last WCC Ding showed he is a real fighter, and counter attacker. Now we will get to see how he is when he's ahead.
Was waiting for this, best analysis as usual... No doubt Rapport would have had something to do with Ding's decision to play the French! Fortune favours the bold.
26:10 Rf3 there has sublime geometry. It does not only threaten the pawn on a3, it would also threaten deadly stuff from the other end of the back rank right after. I think if they had had the position with both players on 30 minutes on the clock, they would have both seen it.
Very “modern” for Ding to leave his King in the centre until so deep into the game; suggests a steely belief by him in his early “ in the tank” analysis. When all this is over maybe a couple of mini-series on centrally placed Kings and King marches ( Ding knows a thing or two about those too) would be fun and instructive (?). Meanwhile as you set out on your own marathon King March of coverage Danny, thanks in advance- the first one was a cracker! Tim
Winning as black Winning as black with French Winning as black with French in World Championship Quite a performance. Don't get me wrong, I used to play French a lot when I was young and it definitely has it's potential as usually it leads to imbalances. But at this level it's really quite an achievement.
I usually shunned the French because of cramped central space and bad queen’s bishop and prefer the Caro-Kann instead. But maybe this game at the championship level is disproving doubters about the playability of the age-old defense, especially as a surprise weapon as black.
The French was(along w e5 til the Zaitsev novelty) Korchnoi’s reliable goto in 78. Only when he switched to the Pirc did things go wrong. Shoulda played that French in game 32.
Very well played by Ding. Quite disappointed by Gukesh performance. It was like he really didnt understood the position. I was also surprised by a lot of the commentaries agreeing that Nxd4 was an ok move. Bxd4 seems much more natural after knights are exchanged and the c3-b4 structure. Its like Gukesh only wanted to play f5 the whole game.
I wonder if White can play Kf2 as the answer to Blacks Qa5? It's irregular but the point is to make sure d4 reamins a strong-point with a pawn there, not a piece. And Yes Leela0 agrees :) The third move suggested by Leela in Analysis...
Was f5 Gukesh eagerness to atk or a desperate attempt to create counter plays. Perhaps position felt uncomfortable so Gukesh didn't want to sit and wait? I mean moving the rook off the f-file probably means no f5 in the near future. Then what would be While's plan in that case?

When pawns are advanced they create weaknesses behind them. If the initiative is lost, as here, the consequences can be fatal.
Waited to see this game on this channel! Best channel for me to learn given my rating.
I'm absolutely delighted with this result, not only am I happy for Ding but it also promises an even more interesting match!
Best commentary as always. No one gives human perspective and a good understanding as you.
'That's not a bad French bishop, that's a BAD French bishop!' Hope that catches on!

Grischuk still holds the record I believe of a 72 minutes think, against Hao in a simular position.
