Vincent Price's acting was so "over the top" that I was laughing my a** off during much of his performance in Pit and the Pendulum.... It's clear that ol' Vincent had a lot of fun making these early horror films.
Vincent Price acting may have been over the top, yet the fear and loathing he felt was clearly evident in his portrayal. He was truly a remarkable actor.
I agree wholeheartedly! Price and Kerr should have at least been nominated. Kerr could have stood a chance. George chakiris who? Price and Schell would have been fighting over it. There's no way Tracy would have been nominated. The production design was flawless. Even Oscar winner boris leven was envious. A wonderful film. Creepy but very effective!
The exterior shot of the seaside castle in "The Pit and the Pendulum" has seen more action than the Marines on Iwo Jima. Every time a B-movie director -- especially at American International -- needed a Spooky Castle establishing shot, there it was. It even was called into service for the "mad scientist" episode of "Gilligan's Island". All it was missing was the blinking neon sign from one of my favorite Bugs Bunny cartoons: "EVIL SCIENTIST" "BOO".
This trailer contains brief shots and dialogue which I've never seen or heard in the film, and I've watched it countless times. I had quality transfers on VHS and DVD. For instance, Nicholas' line "The shrieking...of ..victims became music to his ears" heard here in this trailer is one which I have never heard before apart from in this trailer. There's also a shot in which only one of Francis' hands is secured above his head on the pendulum platform---never seen that shot anywhere but here. Some distinct screams can also be heard in this clip which I've never heard anywhere else. An excellent gothic horror film for sure, though.
I watched this last night, and that swinging pendulum blade really freaked me out! I love it when a horror movie does that. It seems as if everyone involved was really game, and the writing was top-notch for this type of project.
I remember, I saw this as a little kid. I remember one scene so clearly for some reason, when Price cornered Steele and told her he was about to torture her; but it wasn't that, it was that unbelievable - vicious kiss. I mean, he inhaled her entire head. It horrified me. To this day, I think that the guy must have been on drugs or something, damn, he had nearly her whole head in his mouth. It was vicious.
Romantic literature has a lot of subjects of interests. Horror, individual's madness and medieval ages are some of them. E.A. Poe combined them together nicely.

He was the best thing about this film. The other actors were too stiff.
My best friends dad rented a Super 8 copy of this and showed it to all of us at his 9th birthday party... things have changed since "74.
This classic horror film was greatly executed 👍🏽
"Executed"...no pun intended, of course.

Is it a famous mansion?
@@silviomorales6523 It isn't real at all. It was fabricated, but I haven't the slightest idea by whom; it's been around that long.
They use that shot in a lot of Hammer films
Vincent Price was the master of horror rip
How sweet the sound. It’s like a saint book.

you should check out the movie Widows
Vincent Price using drugs to get into character? No offense intended, but I'm pretty sure he's just doing that "acting thing." 😏
Awesome movie
Vincent Price has such a sexy voice! 🖤

Fun fact... Vincent Price is a distant relative of mine!
like all of us
Fun fact... Gandhi and Bob Marley were my great-great-great-great-great-great half uncles
Like me as well 😂
Distance is irrelevant when considering his great talent.
Classic after classic.

Yikes. Suddenly my life doesn’t seem so bad.
Can I watch this even though I can't watch horror movies because I am too scared?

Ok
0:46- Clearly stealing some of the laughing gas from Little Shop of Horrors.
That kiss 😑, if that did not truly look like he was trying to inhale her entire
head 😐; I've never seen anything
like that. 🥴
Is a terry George Movie
Some watching this copied in the Saw Franchise 😊
Macabre reverence. lol
I never found Vincent Price entertaining to watch in horror films; his acting performance never looked convincing.
I'm not saying his acting was hammy, but Barbara Steele once said his kisses were like bacon - really scary bacon, but bacon nonetheless. 🥓
This movie has literally nothing to do with the actual short story.
How idiotic
It doesn’t reflect the short story at all…however, that was the genre of the 1960’s. It is Hollywood’s interpretation to earn $$$$
