I'm form a 3rd generation excavating family in Mich (4 syllable last name too). Key man all those years? In house mechanic & shop. Life saver, kept equipment going, saved ten's of thousands in labor repairs, saved jobs with emergency quick fixes, without him we were toast. Operators you can hire and fire at will and often do. Keeping the equipment costs under contol is gold. But you already know this, I hope.
Andrew, my son bought me a poster for my garage that says - "If my dad can't fix it, it ain't broke". You need to adopt the same motto for yourself! Love your videos. So honest, down to (and below) earth, real, with lots going on. Wish I still had your exuberance and mobility but after 70 years I'm slowing down. Keep up the great work and videos.
Replace the head gasket on Komatsu before the season starts, running with leaky head gasket can mess the engine head, blow the radiator etc.. And its your hardest working machine. It's not hard on those 3 cylinder diesels.
i hope andrew's still making videos in 5 years so he can say "awhile back i fixed the radiator on this thing, i put a plate on the alternator to shield the hose from the belt. well the belt actually was rubbin' up against the plate now the belt's worn out and i gotta fix that. alright let's get to work"
Not sure if it's the right term to use here, but I really do 'envy' what you have goin on for yourself. All these machines, awesome outdoor work space AND indoor work space that looks sweet. I can tell you're never bored. Seems as though there's always something to fix or improve. Never a day wasted. Really glad you film your adventurous projects for us👍
@@HollywoodCreeper do you know how handy an old forklift is? Unless you can deadlift 1500 pounds and lift it 20 feet in the air, then maybe it's not so handy
Now go back and watch some of his earlier videos. They are just as good as this. It is great that Andrew is not a sell out and is true to his fans. I saw he has tee shirts for sale. I would be interested in a hoody for sure or a light jacket. I love it when he does a repair on something no shop would attempt. Great repair Andrew.
Nice job young man. What I enjoy about your channel is that when you don'y know something or are unsure you admit it.When you pulled the counter weight and had it rigged wrong I cringed. Then you saw the correct rigging points and said something along the lines of oh,this is how to lift the weight.Simple but will help others.
I thought for sure he was going to need a second set of hands to reattach the counter weight but he maneuvered it right in place. Damn he's good with that machine, like the controls are wired to his brain, same as his hands.

Nice radiator repair. Back in the day, my Dad's buddy had a radiator shop and made a living repairing and re-ccoring radiators. Get some "Ruby Red" solder flux, helps on jobs like that!

Hi andrew i was curious if you had any thoughts or if any of your subscribers had any thoughts on me welding 1 of my backhow legs pistons at a weld point that has sprung a leak. My question is do you think the piston would get to hot if i welded it wothout taking it apart? I have seen some guys do it but im worried the piston would get to hot and melt the gaskets. Any help is appreciated.
That adjustment on that rad hose some times Andrew you just got to think out of the box .you remind me of myself some 40 years ago when I worked on the same sorts of jobs you do only difference I’m in the 🇬🇧 UK

Nice repair, didnt expect that to be solderable. I can imagine a sturdy/industrial radiator like that to be very expensive. Modern radiators are I think much more fragile and finely build. I can imagine that doing so many oddjobs you get a good feeling for whats doable and what not in general. I like what you fix on your channel and the honest/direct way you document it.
Another way to do this is to first remove the cooling fins around the break. After that just cut the tubes at the bad spots and fold them up like a tube of toothpaste. Did this to the old radiator in my jeep and ran it that way for a number of years. Maybe 20,000 miles or so.

Another great video Andrew. I often think in the same manner as you when repairing things. I almost always have to work by myself and enjoyed seeing you web that strap over the balcony to hold up the cage, as that is something that I would have done. Your channel is one of the best on youtube!
Andrew.. in the old days on the farm we use to dump a can of pepper into the radiator one hell of a stop leak.. works every time. Make sure you get ALL that antifreeze on the ground clean up so Levi doesn't get to it.... Please.
Its not as big a hazard as it used to be. The put bittering agent in it now so dog's wont drink it. Unfortunately, cats don't seem to mind the bitter taste so it is still poisonous to them.
I was just going write about that anti freeze as well. I didn't know about the bittering agent being added, apparently since 2013. Still a good idea to get it cleaned up and not take a chance! Great video, as all of them are!

Winter is the only chance you really get to fix and repair your equipment. Once the weather gets nice its go time on jobs and have some fun in your off time. I would say dig into the head issue and get it done. Come spring you will be happy everything is fixed and ready to rock.

Dude I am at least twice your age and worked on deep and surface mines most of my life. You are a very smart and efficient mechanic/excavator. Even my daughter visiting the other day said, "Dad this is so satisfying watching him dig." Need I say anything more? Lol
I was over a buddies house a few years ago and we were making lunch. The phone started ringing so my buddy put his sandwich on a tv tray and ran to get the phone. His dog TC, a Rottweiler, went over to the sandwich and stole the meat right out of it. TC didn't touch anything else. So my buddy comes back from the phone and takes a bite and is like WTF?!? and exclaimed "What happened to my sandwich?" I came out of the kitchen to see what's up and he tells me TC stole his sandwich meat!!
Just another day in the garage great video. You may already know this but some antifreeze is bad around animals if they drink it. My dog died from it years ago. He had apparently got into some of it on my garage floor.I thought i had cleaned it all up with floor dry. I didn't realize why he was acting weird until it was too late. Animals love the taste of it.
People who buy forklifts for $300 bucks with a blown engine normally do the rebuild themselves, that’s a given. Replacing the head gasket on the Kamatsu should not be a big job. Would like to see the repair in the future. Spring is coming!

That is one way but not better way.Ur way is reducing radiator cooling capacity.

If the alternator on that forklift spins clockwise there's a chance of the belt catching on that little guard plate you installed.

I used to solder the radiator´s on my cars, too. Until the things were completely rotten, as long as there was no long crack in it it always worked.
Winter is the only chance you really get to fix and repair your equipment. Once the weather gets nice its go time on jobs and have some fun in your off time. I would say dig into the head issue and get it done. Come spring you will be happy everything is fixed and ready to rock.

did this to a 1979 chevy pimp van once and it worked great, good skill to have soldering & brazing.

$300 for a Caterpillar forklift seems quite a bargain even if the engine needed rebuilt.
