  • Hi Emily! It has a sneaky Snap Ring. Pull it off with a plier or pry it off with small screwdriver.
    Remove the snap ring on presser bar

    Just want to let you know how thankful I am for all the knowledge you share on your UA-cam channel. I must tell you the part of your videos that I absolutely love. It is when you say "Heh Heh" (that cute little laugh). I always look forward to hearing "Heh Heh" because it brings joy to my heart.
    Andy Tube, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!

    Andy, my heart was full to see a new video pop up. You are a kind, knowledgeable and generous spirit. I learned to sew on my mom’s 401A, awesome machine and I am still sewing on it. I watch and rewatch your brilliant videos. These have inspired me to rescue a 501A and then a 404. They both need a lot of TLC. I am taking your advice and will start with the 404, much less intimidating. I am close to having the confidence to embark on her rehab, just need to find a good name for her 😊 and take some before pictures. Thank you for encouraging this community. I feel like you are a dear personal friend. Thinking and praying for you Andy. ♥️

      such a nice comment. Thank you for saving those machines. You'll enjoy restoring the 404; it's very rewarding. It's hard to hurt that machine so just enjoy the process. Take care.

      @@andytubesewing1953 Thanks for the boost of confidence knowing he (my 404) is tough and sturdy. Just FYI, I figured out the perfect name for this machine, Andy. Promise, I will only have terms of endearment, even if he challenges me along the way of the restore! I will remind myself he is a strong and trustworthy and there are plenty of Andy Tube videos to help me out if I get stuck! Take Care, Joyce from NC.

      @@joycestevens5182 I'm honored; thank you. While it's true that Singer Machines respond well to good care they can be a little sassy at times. Don't be afraid to keep it in line if necessary. Remember you are the boss and they will respect you for it. Thanks for saving that beauty and happy sewing

    Hi Andy, I grew up with and still use my ggma's 201-2 and never had a modern machine mostly because I love the mechanics. I've been spending a lot of time with you via the wonderful videos you made. I recently finally found a 401 - I have been looking for years and wanted one so I could zig zag. vroom vroom! I found a beauty but she had sat idle so long she's all seized up. I want to thank you - especially as to all the 401 videos which really helped me know more how they work and which ways they are supposed to move. Aren't these old machines well made? The workings of my seized 401 are much better thanks to oil and a lot of good grease and wiggling about to get the grease in the gears... Looks like the next step for me will be removing the cam stack and getting to that worm gear and I'm so grateful you showed us how. I just love your videos and all you show how to do - and such a kind gentle person you must be comes through every video; like a good friend right there showing us how to tackle it. I just wanted to add my voice thanking you for all these wonderful helpful videos. I'm hoping you are comfortable and have all you need and wish you love and kindness always. - Dorothy

      You absolutely made my day. Thank you for your wonderful comment. It's always nice to feel appreciated 😊 Zoom-Zoom, hehe. I'm glad you found your 401A and hope you enjoy it. While you are working on it please know that the Playlist for model 403A has a number of videos that relate to your model and cover several systems on the machine that are not in the 401A playlist. You can find it here: ua-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKKyqvdDRwS-9MfLuwSNJTcg.html Also, I like to suggest people tune up the foot pedal. It has worked as hard as the machine and is usually neglected. My playlist for restoring the pedal will help you get it cleaned and adjusted back to factory specs so it controls and powers the motor properly while staying cooler. ua-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKL6ePPxLpmnWSzTyxPKTb71.html
      Thanks again, and I wish you could see my smile now 😄✨

Here in germany, the singer sewinng machines are very common, every day there are over 50 new items on ebay over the country. Your videos are amazing, please don´t stop it and educate us more ! Dear Andy, Let me begin with a bit of a warning, I have the "gift of gab" doesn't matter if I am speaking or typing. OMG you are BACK!!!! I found your videos after you took your break. There have been many days and night I thought, I wish Andy Tube was back. Tonight I am working on my Singer 503a, I watched parts of your video series on rebuilding a PA style motor and have been using some of the information to try and fix my carbon brushes and commutator, there are sparks flying. I was having a difficult time re-installing the top carbon brush and thought I'd view your videos again to help me figure out what I'm doing. I sat at my computer and thought, "I wonder how Andy Tube is doing?" As I started my search for the video I saw a video thanking the a Facebook group 301, so I watched it and kept looking at the date of the video thinking it must be something to do with the number of views, but as I watched I realized YOU ARE BACK! I am so excited you are back and thankful your health has improved. You videos have inspired me, I would NEVER have tried to fix my sewing machines myself. My first Andy Video was about replacing a bobbin winder, with the exception of the spring, I did fine and it works just find with the spring just placed on the bobbin winder spindle. At the time I first found your videos I had a Singer 503a, two 401a, and a Kenmore. These machines were all gifted to me so they are very special to me. Since you have impowered me I have gotten more sewing machines, most of which needed or need repairs of some kind a Singer 337, 338, 248, 628, 638 and a 5050. I was also gifted a Singer 99K. The 337, 628, and 5050 I purchased as gifts, cleaned them up and did some minor work. I have watched your videos even if they did not have my model sewing machine but were about the repair I needed to make. I don't know the words to express how thankful I am I found your videos, or what a great job you do explaining what you are doing, why, and the functions of parts. You think you talk too much, not at all, you have the patience's of a saint I can not learn or follow the other sewing videos out there. Thank you, thank you, thank you Mr. Andy. Please stay healthy I have a lot of repairs still to make. Thank you!

      Hi, Darla! Thanks for such a nice comment. Thanks also for keeping those machines out of the landfill. You have a great start on a wonderful collection. BTW, some sparking of the carbon motor brushes to the commutator is normal, but it should be a minimal amount. If the brush is so worn or used up that the spring pushing on it is contacting the commutator you'll really see lots of sparks. Let's say it's kind of a medium amount. You do not hear a loud noise like the spring is screeching on the commutator, but it seems like too much sparking. That can be from a dirty commutator which is very common from the carbon deposits left by the brushes. There is an easy way now to clean the commutator and reseat the brushes at the same time using a "diamond stone" polisher. Sounds expensive but it's still only $10 as I just checked right now. This is where I buy mine: www.zoro.com/diamond-d-brush-seater-4-34-l-x-14-w-x-14-h-brsrx13ms/i/G4831799/ Here is a 15-minute video I made showing how to do it, and you can leave the motor in the machine while doing it ua-cam.com/video/pzq4tv8qn94/v-deo.html Lastly, here is a short video on my channel explaining my situation as far as making more videos: ua-cam.com/video/AQt0GzHdj30/v-deo.html I do have about 600 videos on my channel. My Playlist page has playlists listed by repair function, such as needle bar, motor, bobbin winder, etc. Then lower down are Playlists by Singer Model number.
      ua-cam.com/channels/USPDsHaFtRoz1VA2U1xJ4w.htmlplaylists Thanks again and take care.

    Do you by any chance have a video showing how to change the bobbin tire on the 348? I have been given a 348, have cleaned it following your video, but I can't see how to change the bobbin tire. Many thanks for all of your extremely helpful videos. You're easy to listen to, and you have a good beat (apologies to Dick Clark). Oh, whoops, I mean it's easy to listen to your instructions and you definitely know your stuff!

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  Рік тому

      Nope, but I'll give you a free copy of the model 348 service manual that explains how to go about it. Reach out to andymanuals53@gmail.com and ask for model 348 documents and I'll have them reply with PDF copies of the parts & Service Manuals. You may be able to remove the motor cover, belt, and handwheel and get to the tire, peel it off the pulley, and press a new one on although the manual shows to remove the front cover plate and top cover and remove the entire BW frame arm to get to the tire. Thanks for watching my channel and good luck.
