We love them and our Daughter when 6 belted out "ITS A BLACK FIVE!!" Which got us an invite into the cab at Cheltenham. I have many parts for one and several parts for a second in 5 inch gauge. Plus hundreds of photos of them in bits having overhauls. Superb 10 years Chris and the way things have worked out for you, superb. Love David and Lily who feature in the IMLEC 2021 Special.

This was a fantastic walk down Memory Lane. Gods, this really takes me back. Can I just say that as much as you may cringe at it now, I really think that some of those earlier foibles, like the shaky camerawork and even the Nostalgia Critic-y gaff were some of the things that may have most helped your show take off in its early days. Speaking for myself, I was a huge NC/Channel Awesome fan at that time, so I was really drawn to your presentation style; clearly trying your level best to be professional while still having that familiar handmade feel to it. While of course I'm glad the series has grown and you and your crew have improved since then, I think that homespun style is what helped you out the most getting started. Seeing something that looked like a couple of blokes just like me trying their best to look professional with the limited tools on hand was a big part of what made me think "Yes, this is something special."
And yes, I'd love to see more reactions to early episodes. Heck, there's an idea for a monthly/bi-weekly thing for this year, make it a whole year's celebration. Plus cheap content and awareness of the USA Tour campaign, wehey!

It’s quite fitting that your SLIP career began with the extremely common Black 5s (so common that I’ve seen two in the past 6 months in the form of Eric Treacy and 5000) and now you’ve covered all sorts of unique and obscure locomotives. Well done for a solid decade worth of content.
And I love that your friend gave you a model of the pink black 5 with the face as a prank. That’ll probably be worth something in the future I imagine.

Happy 10th Anniversary Chris. The Black Fives are my favorite LMS steam engines and 18 preserved examples seems a very healthy amount. I guess in reality, Henry might’ve suffered the same faults these engines had when he was rebuilt into a Black Five. Now I can see you’ve put lots more effort than I thought into these videos. Despite being a real comedian at times, you’re a very smart guy.

I remember a good story about the black 5s looking like the 8fs. I was at The great central railway and the gala schedule had an 8f (48305) hauling the vans, and black 5 (45305) on the tpo. I saw an lms style smokebox and number approaching along with a lot of smoke. I asummed this was the black 5 doing 40 and accelerating hard to get to the speed in time.I pankied and dragged my dad's hand to watch the demo.after running hard towards the pick up and drop off point I knew wouldn't make it in time. Then when we were running along, and the engine bearing down on us. It passed us halfway just beyond the signal box and you can imagine my surprise when an 8f clanked past at 15 miles an hour. Thankfully we did see 45305 on the tpo in the end.

I'm so glad that I finally get to see this! I bought a copy of Volume 1 last year, but I don't have a DVD player of the proper vintage to play it. Working on that, but I'm just so happy to see the Black Five video after so long! Being from the other side of the Atlantic, I just find it so charming, like a British PRR Class M1. Congratulations on 10 Years Chris: I only wish I’d found this series so much sooner than just a few years ago, but better late than never I suppose haha.
But seriously, this has to be one of my absolute favourite series - not just on UA-cam, but full stop. I love the editing, the music, the PTCs, the amazing visuals and the rich history shown in such an entertaining way. I can see why parts of this may not have aged well in your eyes, it’s still a phenomenal series and comparing this with your most recent SLIP on the 56xxs, it’s amazing to see how much you’ve improved on something that was already pretty amazing.

    Congratulations!
For a video from 2011 UA-cam, I’d say this aged fairly well, Chris. Sure, your camera work is way better now, but the editing was pretty crisp and the whole thing looked reasonably professional, which was new in those days (when half the stuff on the platform was shaky vertical cell phone videos!). The humor being dated definitely makes it an artifact of 2011... I feel like comedy is one of those things that ages quickly.
I really enjoyed listening to you share all the incidents and challenges that went into making that episode. I think it’s quite easy to forget how much work goes into your videos, even for locomotives like the Black Fives that are reasonably common. I’m constantly in awe of it! Good luck on another ten years, I’ll be watching!

Congrats on the anniversary! I still remember when I first found SLIPs, I think it was the GWR Castle video a few months after it came out. There are some of the older episodes that I still go back to fairly regularly, mostly on a Western theme. It’s always hard to watch back old projects and performances, but I would argue that, in this case, the quality of content, information, and delivery far outweighs any cringe or iffy editing choices (at least, from an audience’s perspective). Since you’ve suffered through one of your least favourite videos for your audience, you could indulge yourself and do a similar re-watch with the one you’re most proud of…. Anyway, here’s to the continued success of SLIPs! 🍻 🚂

It does feel the steam out of Euston is not as prolific as it was around 10 years ago, from off the top of my head I recall 45305, 6201, 60019, 70000, 60163 and most memorably 5043 visiting the station around that time. I also have a feeling that 6233, 70013 and 34046 also visited too, although I'd have to check to confirm.

An interesting review! Re the occasional use of handheld around 10:30 or so, a lot depends on what’s in use and the conditions. I often do use handheld, with an ‘optical image stabiliser (OIS)’ lens attached to the cam, or just occasionally a monopod, masquerading as a walking pole when I want it to (and sometimes really use it as such on rough ground). A bit of processing during editing can help as well for some short shots.

I know what it's like having to sleep in a car as a few years back when driving back to Southport from York it was pitch black and I was worn out from traveling on that days "Scarborough Spa Express" with Galatea and after a scare on the M62 from tiredness I ended up stopping outside Manchester and slept all night in my car until the following morning. Parents weren't too pleased about what I did but better alive than dead.

    Hi Chris,
I've enjoyed SLIPS for quite a long time now - I vaguely recall seeing the initial episodes on Simon Martin's channel when they first aired, but after they went down, and with my schoolwrok at the time, I didn't find myself returning to the series until sometime around 2015/2016, IIRC. I quite liked this episode, and seeing your reaction to it. It's a product of its time in many ways, such as you commented on your attempt at doing humour like the Nostalgia Critic, things like the colour balancing, and some of the shots being a bit - I wouldn't go as far as to say "naff" as you did - but the cinematography has improved much since then. And the audio cut was a bit jarring with the differing quality mid-sentence. However, from the sentence editing I've done for personal projects, I must say, you did a good job of matching your own tone, as it stays mostly consistent throughout.
It's definitely eclipsed by your more recent work, but it still holds up fairly well. I think there's also some charm to see in seeing how good the first episode was, in spite of the fact that you've improved greatly since then (though the Black Five in pink - both photoshopped and painted Hornby-Triang model - made me laugh). In saying that, it's no surprise to me that you have difficulty rewatching this episode, I understand as a filmmaker, and to about any creative, it's incredibly difficult to re-watch/re-read/re-view in any way, your old work. But with that said, I think SLIPS to your abilities as a filmmaker, both then and now, and I'm happy to have seen so much of the journey unfold - and I look forward to seeing where it goes from here. Oh, and also, more videos like this would be a nice treat, in my opinion, but I understand if you'd rather not go on with them.
    Happy 10 years to SLIPS!

Eden-Green, YOU'RE A PRAT ! Listen, Lad. Anyone doing something like that as a "first attempt" should be bloody proud ! I don't see anything too wrong with any of it - even captions over the end Euston shot.. You weren't the first-and you won't be the last... The Alton sequence was masterful (or bloody lucky ! ) given how you did it. Risked an idea, total gamble, and it paid off. Yes, it DID . Even the pink Thomas 5 ? YES it could have been worse - I thought it would be the SOLVITE wallpaper fiasco ! (Love the fact your mate Steve "hit you" with that oo abortion - you deserved that...) Apart from the subject matter, I've got to say, this has been like sitting there with you, or on "Zoom" . Thinking "for god's sake Chris , finish that and get another bottle of Spitfire cracked.. NOW ! and stop bloody whinging.............Super. Love ya mate. Great work - even if you can't see it yourself... you prat..... XXX (Happy New Year)
