Train travel is the ONLY way to go! My mother had us on trains in the 40s and I used the train going back and forth to school. My husband and I decided to take a trip by train and we fell in love all over again. Thank you Amtrak!
I fell in love with train travel while living in Europe as a young adult. I took my son via Amtrak from Sacramento to Yosemite when he turned 18 and he and I both loved the trip. I’m now nearing retirement and I hoping take up train travel again. It’s the best way to see America.
My Dad (RIP) used to drive the Coast Starlight! I haven't ridden the train since I was a teen, & quite often would ride the Coast Starlight from San Jose to LA, and also San Jose to Seattle. Fun to watch! I have some vintage Coast Starlight coffee mugs & wine glasses. =)
Oh my gosh! I just discovered you guys. Train travel is so underrated. I have never done overnight trips but want to so bad! No one wants to travel by train, except me! Y’all are so cute and loving these videos.
Ty u for sharing u train trips with us. I literally stay up all nite watching your 27 day trip around the Us. I’m now watching ur 35 day European trip along with this one. Ty u again for taking us along the with y’all
God bless America! Everytime I watch these videos I am reminded what a beautiful country we live in! Thank you so much for posting these gorgeous vids, I'm traveling our great country through your eyes, please don't ever stop!
Hello All,, I have not traveled by train in decades, I was a kid when I did. I have to thank you guys you have awaken the train traveler in me now that I am retired and really don't have to worry about my time off. So having said that I am planning my first trip from Atlanta to New York City. Thank you so much for the inspiration and motivation.
I love your videos. I laugh BC both of you really give the viewers the 8 day Amtrak Food Tour. Honestly, it is really helpful to know what to expect and you always deliver. Thanks a bunch!!
Thank You soooo much for doing these! I have always wanted to do a cool train travel but have not yet and I loved being able to ride along with you two. : )
I love trains. I have only been on one when I was 16 un 1969 I liked everything about it, the sounds, the views of Banff in the winter (I live in Canada). They aren't the same today. There was a dining room with tables & the smells that came out of there were delicious.
My grandparents traveled by Amtrak train when I was a kid and it always sounded so fun and glamorous. That was back in the 80s to mid 90s. I always have wanted to do this as well, hopefully in the near future.
When I was a kid, every summer, first 3 weeks in July we would take the train from Union Station in Chicago, to Sioux Falls South Dakota. We left Chicago about 8:30 pm, and it went all through the night, traveling through Iowa. Don’t know the exact route, but as kids, we laughed at the name Davenport Iowa. And came up going north through Sioux City, passing a grocery store called Piggly Wiggly, laughed again. Best 3 weeks of our lives, but very sad when we had to go back. So this was early 50’s- early 60’s. I would love to ride a train again some day. 😎😎😎
Thank you so much for all your Amtrak videos. They are inspiring my family to try a circle trip LAP mo to Flagstaff grand canyon for a stop. Next to Emeryville CA for another stop. Last leg CA Zephyr to Galesburg to return to LAP.
I’m almost 79yo.. When I was a child, my family often traveled on the C&O ….Chesapeake and Ohio….We neatly always had a sleeper, which was a decent sized room, with a bathroom. I loved it. There were also cars containing bunks with curtains… That was fun, too. My paternal grandfather worked on the railroad, so we were lucky …and rode on a pass..
Enjoyable to watch. Very much appreciate your work and sacrifice to share these excursions with us the pubblic. Though enjoyable, I'm sure the extras (videling, editing, tour guiding, updating, etc.) aren't not all easy. And so, thank you for thinking of us too. I'm loving it. ❤❤
So perfect. You could/should have your own TV show. I took a cross country Amtrak and it was the experience of a lifetime. I hope your videos inspire others to take a trip.
When I take the Starlight I always use coach so I can be assured of getting my "coastside" seating. It's usually a day trip anyway. I get on in LA to San Jose or Emeryville depending on final destination. You never want to miss that Coastal view.
Love this trip! We lived near Glenwood Springs for years, and my office looked out over the railroad station and the Hot Springs swimming pool. This is a trip I'd love to take- maybe someday. Thanks for taking us along for the ride!
What an epic journey! How cool y’all got the Viewliner II out of DC! Thanks again for taking us along. We’re going from Charlotte to Orlando next month on the Silver Star. Can’t wait!
Very nice, I sure hope you get an Amtrak discount soon. You sure deserve it. I’m a Canadian and already booked because of you. Great job. Hope your enjoying your cruise.
I had to laugh at your comment near the end re: 2 adult beverages for 1. That would be me and my hubby. I get his guacamole and adult beverage, he gets my bread. Both of us end up happy 😊
Thanks for all the information, I took notes while watching. I agreed with Rob's food choices, too funny when I saw what he selected because my husband probably would select what Allie was eating. Thanks for all the tips too.
I was raised in Gypsum Colorado which is 24 miles from Glenwood. I remember so many days being stuck in traffic during the rebuilding of the road. Great video I’m planning the families next vacation.❤️❤️❤️❤️
I'm from the finger lakes region of NY but I can say for a certainty that NY isn't my favorite state. I love California, I lived in Torrance for 7-1/2 years and they were the best years of my life.
Also, thank you for not adding music. I listen to videos on blue tooth in ear headphones and so often I get blasted when the video switches from talking to music!
@@GroundedLifeTravel that was very nice of you not to say, “ apparently you have never watched another one of our videos.” Which obviously you two are way too nice to say something like that. 22yrs ago on our honeymoon my hubby and I took the Coast Starlight to Tahoe (well, it stopped in Sacramento) but we had so much fun, we had a full room and our attendant was Yoshi, he was such a nice guy. The food was so good....ah memories!!!
We’ve ridden Amtrak from San Antonio to Chicago but I wish we had known about the sleepers. I really love San Luis Obispo. It’s a beautiful town on a hill just north of LA. I lived in San Jose. I bet that hotel felt good. I’ve traveled by greyhound from San Antonio where I lived for 40 years which I really loved to San Diego which takes appox 33 hours if you get a bus with only one change which is in Phoenix Arizona. We always get the very back seats. It got so we enjoyed the ride because numerous times as numerous people all stayed up and talked and told stories. We all were laughing so loud that the driver who was not friendly told us all to shut up. You have to make sure you bring a pillow and blanket and we advise to bring a roll on cooler with dry ice and pack it with drinks and I made a bunch of egg, potato, bacon tacos and a bag full of dry snacks.some other things to carry would be your own roll of toilet paper and a can of air freshener the best would be some poopurri. Compact everything! If you have a phone service is hard to get from San Antonio to El Paso. So I pack a couple of battery recharge packs. I’m glad Joe Biden who rides Amtrak often has been approved to fix our transportation infrastructure as it was in bad need of fixing for people like us that ride transportation like us.
Thank you. The best location (not state) is actually Washington, DC. Loads of tourist attractions, museums, phenomenal zoo, beautiful parks, great hotels and super foods. Welcome home!!!!!
Good job!! It's interesting to see the train conductor open the door at the Burbank CA station instead of the sleeper car attendant. It's great advice for travelers to allow an additional day for connections. Anything can occur on long distance trains, so I've learned to plan accordingly. The Zephyr which originated in Oakland, CA, once had 2 other trains (The Pioneer originating in Seattle, & Desert Wind originating in L.A.) Eastbound, these trains would connect at Salt Lake City, leaving with an impressive consist & ending in Chicago. I think this service ended in the mid 90's due to budget issues. What's bad about Amtrak's Guest Rewards program is members need to use accumulated points within 2 years or they'll lose them.
I think the Car attendant didn't notice we were getting on in Burbank, since it is a small station. Luckily the conductor saw us walking and showed us to the correct car!
I just discovered your channel and I have to say bravo! The shots of the landscapes were beautiful and clear. It was a fun look at what it would be like to do cross-country! I did a journey from Austin, TX to Tampa, FL after I had surgery as a kid and I LOVED it. It was almost 3 days, due to an extended stop in New Orleans & I had such a blast.
Lol, I just moved from Oakland/Emeryville area and I definitely know where you guys are at. It's a real shame that Amtrak didn't use the 16th St. West Oakland station. It would be great if they added the stop again and retrofitted the foundation.
I enjoy riding Amtrak. From Chicago to Florida to Kansas City and other places 👍I’m happy to be an passenger. Speed is alright sometimes a little freighting. I love exploring different areas. Watching you and partner has made my journey a pleasure. I’m a disabled man. I enjoy Amtrak Railway. Have a wonderful Christmas Celebration and all that comes with making your travels safe and prosperous. God bless you both.
I love your show. I’m making Amtrak reservations tonight to go from DC to Connecticut. I want to take one of the trips that you’ve taken. Maybe this coming year. Thanks for doing what you do.
Ironically, on my multi-train trip in September, the first fairly tight connection I had (just under 2 hours) was in Chicago, and it was to the Capitol Limited! But in my case, I arrived on the Empire Builder, and it was only about 25 minutes late, so I had no problem making my connection. Thanks for the tour of the Superliner II transition sleeper and the unique cafe/dining car, both rather unusual. I rode both Superliner types on my trip and also noted the difference between the open and closed closets. I've been in Viewliner I roomettes but never the II; thanks for the tour, but I actually liked the idea of having the toiled in the room. I took two showers on my September trip and like you never had to wait to use the shower. BTW, my favorite "flexible" dining option is the short ribs of beef, surprisingly good for microwave-heated food. But I do wish they would return to "traditional" dining on the Eastern trains.
Wow guys! God sure made some beautiful scenery, didn't He? Thanks for taking us along! I have been to Colorado, from Denver up to Estes Park! I loved it!!
Just took the California Zephyr in January from Sacramento to Chicago….train delayed 5 hrs just west of Denver because of snow and rocks on the tracks…slid into Chicago and was able to grab the last train east to New York…lord what a ride…
I love these videos! You guys are couple goals. I want to travel the USA with my partner when we retire lol. Flying is overrated if you’re going domestic in my opinion. Unless I absolutely don’t have the time I’d take the train every time on a trip.
Great review….and the Starlight’s full route to Seattle has been restored. So the odd number roomettes are the ones to request going north, and upper level starting with #7. I’ll have to keep that in mind next time.
not always the case what happens if they switched the train car around which does happen and they do not know whiich way the cars will be oriented until the employes hop on the train. on the day of the trip.
I just want to say thank you so much for sharing your experiences. I know I will never get to do one fourth of your adventures. I'll travel through your eyes. Again thank you❤
Fun fact. Right after Reno there is a little town of Fernley. Some railway fan friends of mine bought a house next to the track. When we let them know we are on the Zephyr, they will come and wave at the train. And I love the part of the trip through the Sierras. Nevada desert not so much. Good time for a nap after Fernley.
I am watching your video at 1:55 am in Polk County, Florida (unincorporated Lakeland) and I have to say that bag of chips rattling at mark 23:43 made me so hungry. Yep, you guessed it I went and got my Hint of Lime Tostitos and some homemade Salsa with Mango! Hey at least I chose the healthier side of snacking! I really love Amtrak trains and was happy to see there was more train travel video's than the ones videoed in Japan, although I do like them too. I look forward to seeing more of your videos. I and my husband were born in the south, but in 1982 after the birth of our oldest daughter and my husband getting out of the Army (82nd Airborne, Paratrooper attached to the 618th Engneer Company, Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, NC) we moved to Riverside, CA. Two years later we had our second daughter, in 1984, and then in 1986 we had our son, and in 1990 we moved back to the deep south, only not our home states of West Virginia (husband) and Virginia (Me), we settled here in Polk County, Florida. For years now my daughters and I have talked about taking the Amtrak train from Lakeland to Miami, stay for a couple few days and come home again. As a little girl I got to ride the Amtrak train from Petersburg, Virginia to Bedford, Virginia where my Great Aunt lived right across the street from the train station on Bedford Ave. I looked forward to that trip all year and in May we would go! Thank you for your great information and keep the video's coming!
Since there were so many spaces open I wonder if someone could get an upgrade for the roomettes? I love these videos, They keep me wanting to travel on trains lol
I like how calm you guys were about the delays. But like you said don't make tight connections. I haven't traveled on Amtrak before but I appreciate u guys for making this video.
Wow, Burbank to Orlando, what an epic journey. And I though I was having a slightly crazy when I planned Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon into my travel itinerary with a 3 train journey, well 3 & a 1/2 if you include the MBTA transfer between North & South Stations on the Orange & Red lines. Although, I’ll be taking then back-to-back-to-back so I might still be crazy. But there’s 2hrs between the DownEaster arriving at Ten-thirty & LSL departing at Twelve- fifty for a journey that reportedly takes less than 20 minutes, and over 4hrs between LSL arrival & Empire Builder departure so it should all be okay. Planning on going to visit the Willis tower for a couple hours during my layover then will hang around Union Station but could skip Willis Tower if I need to because of late arrival or something. I’m simply waiting for NZ borders to reopen so i can start nailing down some dates on when I can travel to the US and get my Amtrak on
We did the transfer in Boston but ended up just taking a cab because we got to the south station 25 minutes before they downeaster left from north station, going the opposite direction of you. It wasn't much and he got us there quick! Sounds like a great epic trip you are planning!
@@GroundedLifeTravel Damn, that is a tight connection. Not surprised as the stations are only a couple kilometers from each other, could probably walk it in half an hour if one had the time or energy. Cabs are always an option but I'd rather not "waste" money on their relatively expensive fares compare to the $3 of transit and about as fast as driving. Yeah, this is basically the return leg to the PNW of my transcontinental railroad holiday, starting in SFO to NYC & Boston and back to Seattle with stops in Chicago & PA. I think am currently at 9 different routes with 11 different trains, plus a Metro North in NYC & MBTA regional rail in BOS
Great route. I'd like to take a cozy en suite bedroom ride through it during heavy winter storms. Expensive, but worth planning for like any other vacation.
Wife and I took our very first Amtrak trip from Mississippi to Chicago for our Anniversary. I’d worked in Chicago for a few years before we met and my wife had never been but always wanted to go. I surprised her with this trip and spent a few days in Chicago and even rode the Metro Train that I took to and from west burbs which took about an hour. Also we rode to Elevated train around Chicago plus many sites I was knew about. The best was Navy Pier where there are many things to do and see. The trip to Chicago was a great trip as it was a bed room with good size and didn’t feel all that cramped. Had this for both directions, the trip from Chicago back to Mississippi was horrible from the stand point of the Conductor for our car! Once they changed crew it was a trip from hell!! We would like to take another trip but my wife is really is having a problem we had but we have 2 grandsons that have moved to San Diego area for college and she wants to go there to see them. I’ve suggested going by Amtrak and like before doing the trip in a bedroom car. Hope we can make it if we do I will plan to record and do a video of the entire trip both ways. Thank you for this awesome video!!!
It might be too late now but you can always call Amtrak and tell them what happened and see if they will give you a partial refund or partial voucher for a future trip. If it won't work this time, please try the next time when the train is having problems call the next day after arriving at the final destination for that train.
The both of you are so cute..I love watching your videos. My husband and I have never been on a train...to start we want to ride on the dinner train and plan to do so soon. Thank you for all your good info and for sharing your experiences!
I'm folding clothes and traveling on the train at the same time. Thank you sooo much!
Great idea!
Loved this! My hope is that the US realizes what potential there is for upgrading and improving the rail service.

@Squalli I got an Amtrak guest rewards credit card from B of A so my points never expire.
I've always loved trains thanks to my dad so i look forward to my first train ride soon
Hope you have a great trip!
I just started watching your channel and I must say you guys make me want to travel by train again. Thanks so much.
Thanks and thanks for watching!
so Awesome! 👏🏽🙏🏾😊🙋🏽
Thank you! Cheers!
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the video! I've always wondered what the long distance trains are like, and y'all are great at pictures and explaining everything 😊
We've heard traditional is starting to come back in the east slowly.
Newbie here . What is the traditional dining experience? Different menu options?
@@christinaw.4626 Eating in the dining car, with meals actually prepared on board by chefs, resulting in a high-quality meal.
Thanks so much!
I was just thinking that both of you are so very well spoken. Each with a very different way of sharing your experiences. You make a really good team.
Great review….and the Starlight’s full route to Seattle has been restored. So the odd number roomettes are the ones to request going north, and upper level starting with #7. I’ll have to keep that in mind next time.
That is how it was for us
not always the case what happens if they switched the train car around which does happen and they do not know whiich way the cars will be oriented until the employes hop on the train. on the day of the trip.
I love your videos, they give me a chance to see places I've never been to and will never get to go to.
Glad you like them!
Awesome views. Thank you for sharing detailed info and your adventures.
You are welcome
I just want to say thank you so much for sharing your experiences. I know I will never get to do one fourth of your adventures. I'll travel through your eyes. Again thank you❤
Fun fact. Right after Reno there is a little town of Fernley. Some railway fan friends of mine bought a house next to the track. When we let them know we are on the Zephyr, they will come and wave at the train. And I love the part of the trip through the Sierras. Nevada desert not so much. Good time for a nap after Fernley.
Awesome!
@LisaMarli I love that!
Thanks for sharing and watching!
Since there were so many spaces open I wonder if someone could get an upgrade for the roomettes? I love these videos, They keep me wanting to travel on trains lol
Thanks! They eventually got filled, but upgrading people would be a great idea
Love watching you guys, such a lovely couple!
Thanks!
So loved this.... Thank you guys :-)
Our pleasure!
I like how calm you guys were about the delays. But like you said don't make tight connections. I haven't traveled on Amtrak before but I appreciate u guys for making this video.
Thanks! and thanks for watching!
I think am currently at 9 different routes with 11 different trains, plus a Metro North in NYC & MBTA regional rail in BOS
thank you for posting this video of your travels - it's enjoyable to watch
Glad you enjoyed it!
I just found your channel love your duo dynamic, Ive always wanted to travel between NYC and Chicago on the Lake Shore. Greetings from the UK.
Awesome! Thank you! And hope you get on that train soon!
Great route. I'd like to take a cozy en suite bedroom ride through it during heavy winter storms. Expensive, but worth planning for like any other vacation.
49:54 North Carolina! Excellent and ever-expanding state-supported passenger rail.
It was fun to go through North Carolina!
I love the heart pond on 46:17
Wife and I took our very first Amtrak trip from Mississippi to Chicago for our Anniversary.
Wow thanks for sharing your story!
It might be too late now but you can always call Amtrak and tell them what happened and see if they will give you a partial refund or partial voucher for a future trip. If it won't work this time, please try the next time when the train is having problems call the next day after arriving at the final destination for that train.
Born & raised New Yorker I have to agree New York is the best state ❤️🗽
Allie Agrees!
Would love to see Amtrak start running the Route 66 route, again...
The Southwest Chief sort of follows that route!
@@GroundedLifeTravel But cut out the route through my home town, Amarillo, TX...
The both of you are so cute..I love watching your videos. My husband and I have never been on a train...to start we want to ride on the dinner train and plan to do so soon. Thank you for all your good info and for sharing your experiences!
Have fun!
So inspired! 🥰 Thank you guys for the wealth of information. I'm in the progress of manifesting my first cross country train ride !
You are welcome! Enjoy your trip!
I love to cruise and I love the trains. I've been watching some of your videos and subscribed. Thanks for sharing. I truly enjoy your content
Awesome! Thank you!
I did something similar in 2018 I went from Florida to California on Amtrak what a awesome ride that was 👍🏽. I want to do it again one of these days
Thanks for sharing your trip! Sounds great!
How long does that take?
@@anthonygarcia8749 It took five days and three different trains
