The twisties are dangerous as hell. I got them when vaulting and sadly injured my back as a result. I totally get where Simone is coming from and I think she made the right choice.

Getting lost in the air is no joke. Divers experience this as well and when you get lost in the air while diving the bail out means you are about to crash into the water. There is nothing forgiving about the surface tension of water. This often can lead to a burst ear drum if you are so lost that you crash sideways. Sports psychology is something that is getting a lot of attention. Thanks to Simone the world is paying more attention to mental health!

It's interesting because it's a phenomenon that happens to pilots flying in clouds sometimes, you just completely lose control over where you are in three dimensional space and there are stories of pilots finding themselves upside down when they exit the cloud cover. I hope researchers find ways to make the connections because clearly this is an issue of the human brain.

I know you said you don’t listen to non-gymnasts on this, but thought I’d still stop by to share that mental blocks are a legit problem not only in gymnastics - we are figure skaters and mental blocks are VERY real in our sport as well.
One doesn’t even need to be doing anything super complicated to get them - sometimes it’s the simplest tiniest thing that gave you a good scare once or a bad fall… and that’s enough to make your brain pull the breaks every time you try that thing again.
They are quite hard to overcome, too, and it takes time.

While I am not a gymnast, I can give some perspective here in the States about Simone pulling out. The negativity you are seeing is more that people are annoyed that Simone is being portrayed as a hero, or a winner for choosing to pull out of the competition. That isn't to say she is a villian, or should be vilified for her choice, but to say that Simone Biles has done more for gymnastics by pulling out of the competition is stupid.
Simone Biles choked, it isn't just a gymnastics thing, you can choke as an athlete, a performer or even as an every day worker. It happens, stress, anxiety, etc. can cause you to choke. What makes someone heroic, or the GOAT is that you are able to overcome those anxieties, fears and stresses. I think she made the correct decision to pull out for her safety, and so that her lack of ability to perform at her peak did not hinder the team overall and prevent them from medaling.
The other thing being pointed out in the States at least is the double standard of how Simone Biles is being handled. If say LeBron James the greatest basketball player of all time where to simply pull out of the competition he would be shredded, people would say he choked, would say he isn't the greatest of all time. Why is it if a peak male athlete where to quit, or fail under pressure they "Choked" and are called failures, but if a female athlete does the same they are heroic and they are bringing mental health into the forefront of the sports?
I think the past year and this Olympics has put a lot of additional stress on athletes, Simone doesn't have her parents there to support her, to comfort her during something this stressful, or encourage her when feeling doubt. She hasn't been training for 4 years for a payout but 5 years, that is a year of extra strain on the body and mind. Add in the looming COVID threat and to be honest a very politicized Olympics and past year in the USA. I think Olympic athletes also have to deal with a level media attention never seen before and which is always on due to social media. Simone in particular is carrying many different torches, the title of GOAT, the person expected to carry Team USA, representing the best of female athletes and feminism, representing black gymnasts, etc... all of these identities and groups one person is supposed to represent for the rest of the world in some cases, things she did not ask for and should not have to represent.
I am hopeful Simone Biles can get past this mental block in time for the individual events, she is 24, as far as I know that is about the end to most gymnasts careers as Olympians. You can correct me if I am wrong. I just do not see her making the team at 28. In her interview she said a few things that made me think she wants to quit gymnastics and I hope she is just frustrated and can get past it.

No you're not a gymnast. That's where you should have stopped.

Seriously, this isn't about gender. Perhaps you're just a misogynist? If you do any gymnastics or tumbling, there is something called 'air awareness' which is the ability to know where your body is in the air (or spatial positioning). This involves proprioception and visual cues that your brain must interpret. If done so incorrectly, she could land on her cervical spine, which could lead to death, a ventilator for life, or quadriplegia - if she's lucky. She has the self-awareness not to take this risk & her coaches are correct not to push her. It allows the rest of the US women's gymnastics team an opportunity to rise to the occasion. There are alternates for a reason.
As you're not a gymnast, do yourself a favor and learn more about Elena Mukhina and how she was pushed to learn/perform the Thomas Salto. The documentaries are heart breaking. No one wants something like that to happen to Simone.

(Rhys sorry your comments got hijacked. Best wishes for your final on Sunday! Enjoy your travels afterward; if you make it to Northern California or Boston, feel free to gimme a shout.)

@@Kitty8791 So pointing out a double standard in sports is misogyny? Maybe you should actually act like a feminist, where you want equality in the sports.
I said I agree with her decision, to pull out of the competition if she felt it wasn't safe. What people have an issue with is the double standard of how someone choking under pressure is treated as a hero. Which you totally glossed over.
Congratulations you linked an article on wiki, but did not address a single point I brought up about the double standard of male vs. female athletes choking, and how she is treated as a winner and a hero when she didn't compete. Instead you accused someone of being a misogynist for pointing out a double standard that should be corrected to greater achieve equality in sports.

This happened when I was a kid..I was suppose to step out of an Arabian in my pass, but I popped up really high and landed on my neck/head. I can't explain how scary it was, luckily I wasn't hurt. My brain mixed up the Arabian with a double full and I bailed out in the middle of it. Wishing you the best of luck!

gymnastics is a heavily scrutinized sport where every move has a corresponding point so i know it hella stressful for them. other sports can rely on luck to score a point (volleyball, basketball etc) but gymnastics dont
