    Hi Shawn,
Here's an updated design from that I was introduced to in the 1980's. I was in a mouse infested house. My roommates older brother fixed us up with a 5 gallon bucket with a coat hanger pushed through the axis of a beer can set across the bucket mouth. Peanut butter was smeared on the can. Mice would make it to the beer can and fall into the water. The water needed to be deep enough so they couldn't touch the bottom. It worked great.
Thanks for sharing the historical design and video.
    Mick

The lure of peanut butter seems to not to deter the other mice even though they saw their friends swimming frantically in the bucket.

I found this to be the best. it basically has no limit on how many mice you can catch a night (if the bucket is big) but you need to modify it a little so the rat can clime on it from either end of the stick. You can use a long stick that connects to the bucket on both ends. So it's more efficient. :D also, the device is too small, otherwise you could have easily caught that giant rat :DDDDD

I used a stick across the bucket with a string tied in the middle with the lid of a jar on the end about 6" below the stick with bait on the lid. In one night I had enough to where the rest could stand on them and climb out. another thing we did was mixing bromo seltzer and flour and leaving it next to a bowl of water.

Tape an empty wine bottle neck to the end of a broom stick. Other end of broom stick rest on top of washing machine or table weighted down with brick or sandbag. Wine bottle end extending out like a pirate plank/diving board out over the floor. Under wine bottle end put large rubbish bin on floor filled with 15 inches of water. On the lower half of bottle body extending from neck out from end of broom stick you drip lots of cooking oil and at far end (being bottom of bottle) put some peanut paste or cheese. Mouse/rat walks out along the wooden broom stick from sandbag end to wine bottle then walks out onto slippery glass bottle to go for food and slides off falling in bin of water under the bottle. Rodents swim till too tired and drown cause can't put feet on floor of bin to push up. Old Australian farmer told me this. Easy. No fuss. Anyone can make it. Very successful. Works like a beauty. Broom stick, glass wine bottle (no label), duct tape, cooking oil and cheese/peanut. Bottle doesn't spin, rodent just slides off oily glass bottle. The bottle neck is taped to end of broom stick extending straight out from broom stick, basically extending length. So the mouse simply walks the plank to the slippery end and slides off. You could have the wine bottle end a little lower than the other sandbag end so mouse slips down along inclined bottle easily. Nothing spins, mouse just slips off bottle end into bucket of water.

      Gabriel Rodríguez Gutiérrez
Its an acceptable variation of the shed analogy. In fact I'd argue that the tool shed analogy is a variation of the knife in drawer analogy. Because the latter makes more sense than the former. All knives are expected to be sharp to serve a purpose, whereas not all tools need to be sharp to be useful, e.g. A hammer.

Rub Vaseline around the inside edge of the bucket, maybe even a little of the wooden dowel. Makes it impossible for them to grip anything. Its what we used to keep the squirrels out of the bird feeder. Little bastards could shimmy up the 1/4 in metal pole holding the feeder. But they sure couldnt after rubbing some Vaseline on it haha.

I've used a similar modified version.
Run a dowel through the cap and bottom of an empty plastic water bottle. Place in notches cut in the top of a 5 gallon bucket and fill halfway with water.
Smear a little peanut butter around the middle and you'll catch a bunch of mice. Or ground squirrels which is the problem in my area.
No ground squirrels = no rattle snakes.

Use a spring as the spindle and fill the bucket with 3 inch of treacle, we used a similar grav trap to this when we were kids, but used a 2" sink pipe with a 1ft mid section that pivoted down under the rats weight and into a dustbin and the pipe sprang back up with a small spring, set so a marble would set it off

We live in the city in a 100 year old house.. We see mice and mouse poop once in awhile, more poop than mice.
I'm not sure if they're so dirty or disease ridden, but they chew through wires, and walls and crap everywhere, especially inside your heating ducts. (we have to clean them at least once a year). They make holes everywhere, inside cupboards etc..
Squirrels can be pretty damaging as well.
We've sealed every tiny hole we could find. We have all of our food, (flour, cereal, rice, pasta, coffee, etc.) in big gallon jars, and wipe off counters and the stove top with javex right away, we keep the garbage up, (because we have 2 dogs), but still have them because our winters are so long and cold. They will feed on traces of food or dishes not cleaned thoroughly.
They do a lot of damage in your house if you do not get rid of or control them, and It's extremely hard to get rid of them humanely.
I've met people who have had fires caused by them chewing wires.
Also, my neighbour has 4 cats, they catch some, but she still sees mouse poop once in awhile....

I had Squirrels chew a bunch of big holes in my Shed Wall & go live inside..they RUINED EVERYTHING even chewed holes in my Lawn Mower's Tank & all my Vintage Camping Gear..my antique Books.. When it comes to Rats the old fashioned Wooden Victor Traps work well. Take Hot Sauce & "paint it" on the things you really don't want chewed..they HATE Garlic/Onions & Hot Sauce.. they taste it once & leave it alone. I read if you feed them Bay Leaves it kills them but the ones I dealt with completely avoided them, & later tested out my Victor Trap (& lost) (yay)

That rat was pretty big. I had a barn on my property a couple years ago and used a metal hanger, 5 gallon bucket, and a prescription bottle that spun on the hanger. Same principle, without the paddles. I caught a lot of mice. They love peanut butter. A little anti-freeze keeps the water from freezing (not safe if you have pets).

  • @JDFARM
    @JDFARM 5 років тому

This is better than the invention of the wheel. On the farm, the rats are a big problem. I spent $100 on bar bait 2 weeks ago. That thinned them down but they chewed through the wire used to hang the bait.
For your trap, make the rod and fins out of aluminum or stainless. It will never wear out and rodents can't hang on to it. Suspend the bait by a wire one inch above the fins.
You might experiment with the number of fins, size, and shapes.
Use a 6 to 8-inch deep stainless pot, halt full of water. Dig a hole for the pot and put the top at ground level. Use a hard dog food that will float and sprinkle in the water. Rats and mice go for the food. The stainless steel is slick. They fall in but they don't get out.
I am going to use both inventions and try to build a better mousetrap. I get something that will catch 100 per night, I will send you a pick. Thanks for the inspiration.

I would probably try to add some round magnets to each flapper edge and then mount a round wooden disc onto the dowel rod with attracting magnets on it but attatch it so that it doesn't spin, then space the round disc away from the flapper to where it breaks away with the movement of a mouse on a flap. The more you pull the disc away the more sensitive it's going to be and the closer you move the disc the less sensitive!

I would think that the rod has to be a part of the windmill assembly and rotate along with it. The mouse is going to go across the top of the rod with its center of balance over it... no problem. When it hits the windmill it will then be the mass on the end of a lever and rotate the entire structure and fall. I would put the bait on the very ends of the blades so the mouse has to reach out for it. Would love to see this again in a couple different variations.

Works better if the bucket is empty with peanut oil on the vertical part of the bucket. The best mouse trap is a cat if there are no allergy issues. When my little buddy was here, not only did I not have any mice in the house, but there was not one burrow from a chipmunk either. He devoured them all.
