Doing the valve clearances is so much easier and quicker on my 86 GSX-R1100 than my 87 Yamaha FZR1000, the Yamaha has 20 valves and uses shim under bucket, on the plus side, you only have to do them every 42,000 Km, but i do them at 30,000 to be on the safe side.
Don't forget to put all the little plastic caps back in the allen head tappet cover bolts, a previous owner had lost all mine and my OCD couldn't live with that, had to buy some more :-))
got a Haynes manual for my gsx and the order in which they have you set the timing mark and which valves to adjust is incorrect. so you can throw that in the trash and use the manual for clearances and torque specs only.
A haynes manual also led me astray on my 87 FZR1000, i found quite a bit of the info was incorrect after i found a Factory Manual that was printed by Yamaha. The trouble with many haynes manuals is they cover too many models in one book, the FZR one covered the 600, 750, (including the OW01) and the 1000s from 87 to 95, its too many, no wonder mistakes are made.
2:30 is it expected that oil comes out from that side of the engine? It happened the same to mine, but I’m not sure should be oil with ignition pick-ups. Thanks
The valve adjustment tool can be ordered from Amazon Motion Pro 08-0073 Tappet Tool Set www.amazon.ca/dp/B000JP31T8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_WNRDFX3V53E825KNXGAV
Hi your video is excellent - can you tell me which size tool from the motion pro set you used for this engine please - they sell the tools individually and the full set is quite expensive and it would be great to just get the one needed Thanks a million
I have a 2020 gsxr. It’s a top speed bike. Recently I have been unable to reach 207. Struggles to hit 200-201. Just did a compression test, tho I could only reach 2 cylinders at this time. But it’s clear already. Does this 1100. Not have shims like mine?
I just bought a GSX-R1100 1989 , after owning a ZXR 750 H1, this video is excellent !!!! thank you so much !!!
Thank you 1,000 times for this, there is hardly anything out there on the 1100s..
Taking my 87 out of storage this winter…need to do this. Excellent vid. Thank you!
Congrats on getting the 1987 going!

I agree, shims are hard work by comparison.
Hi great video! Can you make one on how to take the engine off the frame ?
Let me check my footage. If I have it, I'll make a video.

Thanks. i have valves set too tight. Can it make some rattle?
Tight valves go too quiet. They don't rattle.

These early years of the 1100 have threaded screw and lock bolt as shown.
This is where to buy the manual.
