90’s Nostalgia
The 90s were a magical time filled with mom jeans, frosted tips, and, of course, boy bands. The phenomenon took the music industry by storm and dominated pop culture for much of the decade.
Lil Pearlman
Let's start at the beginning, long before Pearlman became one of the most influential figures in the '90s music scene. Lou was an only child growing up in Flushing, New York. He spent a lot of his time with his childhood best friend, Alan Gross.
Crashing and Burning
Pearlman took all the knowledge and expertise he had absorbed and used it to launch his very first blimp venture. He started Airship Enterprises Ltd. and planned to lease blimps to various companies to advertise their brands.
Lou Kid on the Block
With a couple of failed blimp enterprises under his belt, Pearlman made his return to music. Inspired by the success of his cousin Art Garfunkle, Pearlman surveyed the landscape of the music industry and identified one band, in particular, that was making serious 90s waves.
New BBB - Brands, Bands, and Billions
At this point, Pearlman looked like an absolute genius. He was the brains behind two of the most viral music sensations of the 1990s and helped many other successful musicians gain footing in the ultra-competitive industry.
No Strings Attached
It seemed like everything was going swimmingly for Pearlman and the successful boy bands he helped shape. The Backstreet Boys had exploded up the charts, so too had NSYNC, and the two star-studded groups were piling up the record sales for Trans Continental Records.
Ponzi Pearlman
If being buried in endless lawsuits wasn't enough of a bummer for Pearlman, his whole music empire came crashing down in 2006. The FBI had been investigating Pearlman's affairs at Trans Continental Records and the label's parent company, Trans Continental International, Inc., which Pearlman also ran.
Bye, Bye, Bye
But Pearlman wasn't home to answer the door. Big Poppa was long gone, having caught wind of the FBI's imminent arrival, and fled the country as quickly as he could. He first went to Germany to evade his would-be captors.
The End is Near
Lou's company was forced to file for involuntary bankruptcy shortly before his arrest. Many of his high-priced possessions and boy band memorabilia were sold at auction to recoup the money he owed.
Pearlman’s Legacy
The boy band mogul's legacy has lived on without him, not only due to the continued success of the musicians he helped create, but also because of the documentaries about his eventful life.
I love America. The only place you can get a shorter sentence for murder than for stealing money. U.S.A!
You don’t fuck with the money that’s what it’s all about
Money > Life
Give it a try then
The only place where you can package your own shit and sell it off as gold nuggets.
In America stealing is only a crime if you steal from the rich.
It’s always fascinating to see people who would’ve been rich by doing things right but that wasn’t enough for them.
“Lou Pearlman was so interested in blimps when he was younger, he decided to become one”
waited for that comment and wasn't disappointed
😂
He sure did.
He eat his food real good
Omg I was just about to comment this exact phrase. 👏 🤣
I'm surprised that Hollywood hasn't made a movie about him.
Because he belongs to their …. .
There was actually a movie in the works a few years ago, based on the Vanity Fair article, and the working title was Transcon. It is currently in development hell.
that would paint the jews in a negative light, can't have that
Hard to believe that a man of his size thought he could disappear into the crowd in Europe. Hardly incognito at that weight. Even among other American tourists he must have stood out.
The missing 300 million was his food budget...all gone he ate it.
😂
🤣🤣
🤣🤣🤣
Nice companion piece to the 20/20 segment, which is even more illuminating. In that piece, Lance Bass described not being able to pay his rent or make a down payment on a car, despite NSYNC having sold millions of records.
TLC were completely broke even though they had sold millions of records. Two of the girls from Destiny's Child couldn't even pay their phone bill while Beyonce was driving a Jaguar. The 90s were full of music artists being screwed over left and right by everyone from managers, to producers, to record companies, etc. This is why the music industry tanked after internet downloading become a thing. It was Karma to such an evil industry.
He worked so hard to do bad. If he would have used that same energy to be honest he would have been a legend.
Typical Gemini for you.

Good morning sir. Can I interest you in this all American boy band over here? Zero percent down. Low payments. Catchy songs.

Like Bernie Madoff, Lou could have had a comfortable life playing by the rules
I always wondered what kind of people purchased those gaudy and tasteless Rolls Royces; I guess I have my answer.
Always awesome content Pablo thank you for the entertainment brothaaa! Blessings 🙏
Been waiting for this one for a while!
"A helicopter taxi company that flew people around New York City" - and the film shows the helicopter flying near downtown Los Angeles. Good one :)
Talking people around town in an helicopter where would it landed at.. on top of building.. Like a taxi cab
I thought he deserved prison for creating Boy Bands. I had to hear that crap.
Har har
This shit has been going on since music has been recorded
It's not fair to say *NSYNC was Timberlake led. If anything they were Justin and JC led.
I'm going to use the techniques I learned watching this video, to sell bottles of water to tourists.
The things you learn on the internet. 😏😉

I wonder if people just look at him, and his business interests, and decide "yeah you gotta be, definitely into young boys."
And he was
Yes , but , without Lou Pearlman there would be no Backstreet boys an NSYNC , or Aaron Carter
Agreed
That's awesome that you have the same animator as The Infographics Show.
So the big question is, who owns the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC's Masters/Publishing? Since it was a "fictious" themselves business. Hopefully the groups own it
Heya! :D Great video - where's the archive from at 5:36? Cheers!
Pearlmen was the Bernie Madoff of the music industry.
what about clive davis???!!!!
If we didn't have so many different kinds of formalities in the way of documents and licenses then more people would understand these docs and it would be harder to get away with phonies. The needless complications in how many documents you need to get by with a business leave openings for don kings.
Not to sound like an apologist for Lou Pearlman. But if compared to K-Pop music executives? Pearlman would be a Boy Scout. Yes he did rip off his talents. But at the same time he made them taste the good life a little bit. He hosted awesome parties, and made them live in comfortable homes. While he did cheat them out of their salaries, they did at least a comfortable place to stay and were not starved.
Compare that to K-Pop girl and boy bands who have to sign "Slave contracts". They are already in debt right before they even sell a song. They live in tiny apartments and are not even allowed to own a cellphone. They can't even see their relatives. These guys are forced to eat nothing but cabbages and cucumbers just to achieve that slim look. On top of it, they are made to rehearse 18 hours a day. The treatment is tantamount to human rights abuse the Korean government had to intervene.
Yikes!
Agreed. This is nothing comparatively speaking.
It's not stealing if it's in the contract
Wow my mind is blown Art Garfunkel is Lou (the money shrew)'s first cousin!👀🤯
I was a pedicab driver in Orlando around 2003/4 and I took Lou Perlman from a restaurant downtown to his office a few blocks away. He had a stack of Benjamin’s in his inside coat pocket. He peeled three off for me. “ I pay $100 per block”, is all he said to me. I now know why he was so generous. It was other peoples money lol.
he put the wood in timberlake
Lou Pearlman liked blimps so much he became one
Fun fact. If you die before your prison sentence is finished your listed as escaped
🤦♀️🤣🤣🤣
It’s almost like thinking a guy named Lou Pearlman won’t rip you off is a bad idea.
He even tried to look like a blimp...
Clearly succeeded
This somehow forces admiration
Wasn't he dipping his stinger intl kiddies ?
Lance Bass was not a founding member of Nsync. He replaced the other original 'N' member who left unceremoniously, and Lance was briefly known as 'Lansten'... Because 'Esync' doesn't quite have the same ring to it.
"Pearlman was beginning to flex his business muscles..."
Those were about the only muscles he was flexing.
I had a djavu about a dream in that collage.crazy something in the air
Family friend of mine invested in Lou’s ponzi scheme and lost all the family money. When Rodger was on his death bed, Family friend of mine invested in Lou’s ponzi scheme and lost all the family money. When Rodger was on his death bed, he was crying to his wife and said, “I’ve failed you” because he left nothing to care for his wife. All because of this slime bag. Anyway, we went to the sentencing with Waneta. She never saw another dollar.
Wow!! I’m so sorry.
"The WYTEE Don King" 🤣
Holy shit I thought you were talking about clay from sons of anarchy I clicked so fast then realized that’s definitely not him lmao
Wow!
It’s such a coincidence that he was into blimps being a blimp himself.
2:00 Helicopter Taxi company. LOL. they already had a low cost helicopter taxi company in New York City...but there were was a serious accident that occurred with one of the helicopters and the business died afterward. now its for the wealthy only that fly into Wall Street, who either own the helicopter and can afford a private pilot, or a charter service that has much higher standards.
I love the way the boy bands "me-tood" Perlman 25 years later, after the many millions he made for them ran out.
The guy is gone now so why?
Exactly, Lou was the victim.
He was stealing the money he made himself the sixth member of n sync 🤣
Pearlman, Madoff and others from that Old Testament community love these financial schemes.
which "others", exactly ?
@@dereksteele291 Your kind davy
Super smart guys ruthless
First time I've heard the phrase "that Old Testament community".
Lol I see what you did there
And yet the IRS didn't even notice him. Amazing!
The bands were what got him rich but was also a good distraction from what he was really doing
Wrong, he lost hundreds of millions from bands he created winning settlements against him after they breached their contracts and court ruled against him. Lou was the victim. The band members signed the deal and got greedy after the fact. Don't believe everything you hear or read. Smh
He earned his wealth prior to becoming involved in music via his aviation business. He used millions of his own money to create these bands careers. They have lavish life's now because of Lou and had he not decided to create these acts, the band members would have never attained fame whatsoever. Period dot.
Research how much all the major record labels wanted him gone. He was targeted and destroyed by them, because they couldn't stand that he was able to create his own label along with the entire boy band phenomenon and they weren't able to profit from it. They even tried to purchase Transcon Records from him multiple times and threatened him to do so, but each time he refused. That's the real reason he is dead...
He didn't suffer long enough for inflicting those boy bands on us
You'd have to be deaf to not at least appreciate *NSYNC's music. Unless you don't like some of the all time best vocals, hooks and melodies. And at times surprisingly great lyrics. Fair game on the others, but *NSYNC was a different beast.
@Totally aware you must be older?? Usually older people feel like that lol.

And now the helicopter taxi business is a thing!

Talk about kicking a man after he's passed away! Two trend-setting pop groups, and a billion dollars in cash flow . . . for over ten years! Record labels are notorious for gouging their clients. Didn't Backstreet Boys sing 'You gotta fight, for your right, to par-tay?
??? He ran a scam and no, the BEASTIE BOYs wrote "You Gotta Fight..."
Labels sometimes scam their clients, but actually rarely. Artist often want everyone else to do the legal and due diligence and then are shocked at what they ended up agreeing to. Sometimes Artist scam the labels, I've honestly seen more of that. I've been in and out of that business for 30 years...its a basic VC model based on 80/20 logic with a 1% expectation of success.
..i wanna be like Lou!!!!!
I remember running into Lou in 2000. He was trying to scam the company I worked for.
Something uncanny just happened.
I was watching a dry, factual science video on *LEMMINO* and suddenly, apropos of nothing, the name "Lou Pearlman" popped into my head . . . so I entered it as a search and this video came up, posted just a bit earlier today (it's 1:50 PM here in The Corn Zone just now).
I watched a video on premonitions and presentiments a bit earlier, as well.
Isn't there actually a name for this specific kind of synchronicity?
Of course, it's probably coincidence - or, as the Skinnerians and Behaviorists say, I was probably responding to cues that I was consciously unaware of.
Mysterious, yes?
Regards,
Kev
ps.
I would have looked here on *Pablito's Way* first for something factual and concise on the man . . .
but this post came up first in my search, anyway.

"the 90s were a magical time......"
NOPE, they were not, the 80s were
I remember when he was making US5, I was in Germany then as a teenager, I watched the weekly reality show, we all liked him but, somehow, I knew something wasn't right. It's a pity he's dead though.
How fitting that he was heavily invested in blimps..

Please don't call these boy bands "musicians", it insults real musicians. They are male dancers and great at the art of lip-sync.
I take a few issues with this video....yes. their are a lot of scammers out there. yes they use sales funnels...but just because an owner or an individual are using a funnel does not mean it is a scam. depending on the individual you can get a lot of great content, or learn new skills from these courses. and in APPLYING it can set yourself up for success...just TAKING the course will not guarantee success. which is something a lot of people don't consider. sales funnels are very valuable for online marketing strategies provided you can add value. doesn't mean it's a scam.
