Affliction originated as an improvisation which was pre-recorded for a live-streamed performance of the song Contaminate Me by Leprous in Notodden, December 2020. This solo was the only take I recorded for the stream and it occurred to me upon listening to the isolated cello track that it could stand alone as an independent piece.
Affliction is a grief-stricken lamentation embodied by a raw and vulnerable solo cello performance - a lone voice crying out within a cavernous abyss.

Wow, magnificent improvisation, Raphael, brilliantly executed! And the almost "middle-eastern" feel is very evocative, reminded me of duduk songs I heard. I love that you allowed the organic instrument to express the lament on its own. There's so much more to the sound, that way... Well done!

Thank you so very much!! I truly appreciate the kind words. This form of Middle Eastern lamentation is something I gravitate to quite often, and the cello lends itself well to this kind of expression. I agree, it’s nice to allow the single voice to carry the trajectory and emotions of the music without being “enhanced” by other elements. It feels more raw and vulnerable somehow, which is something I’m increasingly drawn to in music lately.

Congratulations on another amazing performance Raphael!! I really like your finger positioning technique along the fingerboard both in this track and in others, especially with "Τhe visit". It is of a very high standard and is one of the main reasons why your sound is so good. Especially when playing chords using all 4 strings. You have a lot of talent and it's obvious that you love playing the cello very much! Well done mate!!
