-DESIGN-
Between these three cases, the thinnest is the Pursuit. The biggest is the Defender…Pro. Actually, the Defender and Defender Pro are both the same size. The Pro does weight a few more g’s because of the extra TPU that covers the Apple Logo.
Installing your iPhone is actually quite similar between the three cases. On the Pursuit, you have to peel back the TPU edge and remove the front panel, put the iPhone in the back panel, reinstall the front panel and then press the TPU into the front panel.
For both Defenders, you first need to remove the TPU sleeve, then take the PC frame apart and place your iPhone in the frame and reverse the process. The general install hasn’t really changed in many years.
In general, all three cases fit quite well. I might say differently if this was an older Defender as the screen protectors were garbage but Otterbox decided that the OLED screen’s were too nice to cover with a plastic screen protector.
When it comes to general wear and tear, both Defenders will suffer through drops better as the PC on the Pursuit will scuff up a bit.
When it comes to the texture of the case, it’s hard to beat the TPU all the time covers of the Defenders. Personally, I am impressed with the design of the Pursuit’s edges as the angle of the case makes the iPhone easier to use. The thicker front of of the case means that my fingertips have a stronger hold on my device which is great.
No you might be thinking I’ve left out the biggest marketing feature of the Defender PRO which is the Otterarmor Microbial Defense. According to Otterbox, this feature is going to kill off common germs.
Now as a product reviewer, I try to test these marketed features BUT given my lack of knowledge about growing microbial cultures, I have no idea if it’s going to work.
-FUNCTIONALITY-
In general, I’ve found that accessing my iPhone through Otterbox products was subpar over the years. For the Defenders, my biggest complaint was the screen protectors. They reduced the usability of your iPhone's screen by an incredible amount.
In general, the buttons on the iPhone can be accessed through the case without much hassle. For all three cases, the button access has gotten better between the older versions of the cases and the newer ones. On the original Pursuit, using the buttons was difficult because of the design. The newer Pursuit allows for better access.
The Pursuit’s mute switch is easily accessible which is different than the old version as that had an incredibly frustrating tiny switch, the sound of the speakers is projected to the front and there’s a dust mesh which is odd.
On the Defender, there are flaps that cover the mute and ports. The speakers aren’t covered like the Pursuit and the belt holster is handy for those with tight jeans and can function as a stand as well. None of this should be new to anybody because it’s been like these FOR YEARS.
--PROTECTION
When it comes to protection, it's hard to argue with the protection a multiple-layered case offers your device. We dropped our iPhone in each case about a multitude of times and the three iPhone's we used in this video came out unscathed. The screen protectors on the other hand are a different story.
Long story short, if you're planning on getting a new Defender, get a screen protector!

I have the pursuit case on my XS Max and love it. It actually makes my speakers louder and I like that it covers my port. I use the lanyard when hiking and also have a Popsocket on it. I find that case does a great job of protecting the phone.

One of your best Video's IMO, you sure put the phones "threw" the paces. Keep the good work up for the next generation of phones and cases because who can keep track. Like you mentioned the price of phones are sky rocketing and with tariffs imposed on China were the I phone is made will make it out of reach soon for the average Joe. I have the Otter box Strata(2yrs+) for my S7 edge and it's just great for curved screens.

I work industrial maintenance and have dropped my iPhone 8 Plus from 20 feet on to concrete. No damage to the phone or the case.

I have a defender pro as a back up for when I need a beast case. I still use the Presidio grip
I am still sporting the S5 and it is all due to the protective Otterbox Defender. Mind you, I am on my 3rd case, as I use the belt clips and the clip mechanism breaks after a while. Other than that, I have dropped my phone approximately 8-10 times in the last 5 years, and it is still unscathed. I have plans to upgrade to the S10, and have ordered the Otterbox Defender Pro!

the drop test was very convincing, after that, i was already sold. never once have i NOT cracked a previous iPhone of mine (i like to admire the case-less look), but since the X is extremely expensive, i want to be prepared and cautious, so, thanks for this
Also get otterbox tempered glass. If the case offer or glass break they'll replace it. You would just have to pay for shipping

I’ve owned a few defender series phone cases for my iPhones. Others, as well as myself, experience a lot of dust getting inside after a while. Some to the point where it starts to scratch the finish of the phone. Do you know of any issues like this with the pursuit case? Have you experienced any dust getting in any of your phone cases?
You mentioned the dust mesh on the pursuit was odd and you would get to that in a bit which you never did. What is odd about the dust mesh?

Great video, thanks for posting. I have a question about your audio setup on the Osmo Mobile, any chance you could do a quick vid on your audio setup? I have an Osmo Mobile as well, and have been using off camera audio because I get so many problems when I hook up my VideoMic Pro from Rode that it has been better for me to just send the audio to my H4N Pro and sync in post. I plan on doing it after the XR comes out. Speck's hard to work with...hard to justify spending $100's of dollars on a brand that's ignored me for years.

Thank you Sir. Based on quick shots I am guessing North Vancouver or Burnaby for you. Anyway... I learn from your studious comparisons of products. I used to use Otter Box defender when I had an iphone 6 in 2013. Problem was it was so hermetically sealed that it muffled the sound from the speaker horribly. And just becasue a product line or even individual model is great for iphones, does this translate into the same being true for Samsung smartphones and tablets? What's more while it make sense to buy the best for a $700 tablet, doing the same for a $300 product starts to become questionable, dontcha think?
Aaron! Is weighing cases something you might do more often? I think that's an awesome idea...that's one raw number that is a good way to compare cases...it's very quick and helpful. Great video, and yeah the intro was cool, though it seems like an all Otterbox intro...so maybe just for this video?
I actually weight every case I review and threw it into my running scoring system. I haven't been using the scoring system in the videos as much lately...mostly for the Top 10 videos.
The new intro is custom made for each case I review...it takes an extra 30 mins to make BUT it allows me to use certain clips that I can't use in the video.
I have the defender pro on my XS Max because as you said, it hasn’t changed in years so I know I can trust it! Also, I opted for the defender PRO due to the anti microbial aspect because I do have a small boy who still puts my phone in his mouth, just like your adorable baby 😊
Sorry I am new at this, what’s a TPU? And which screen protector do you recommend? I dropped my iPhone face first on gravel and it completely shattered the glass. Dark screen, could not do anything while being out of the country for an extended time. Super bummer. Thank you for this video!

Yes. I'd been an Otterbox fan since I had my 1st smartphone-which is an iphone 3S. I remember them including a screen shield installed which I remove anyways.

Is the Defender easier with one hand vs. the Pro? The back cutout for the Apple logo on the standard may make it easier since you can put a finger in the cutout for grip etc?

One item I wish otterbox would make available is the belt clip cover housing without the belt clip. It covers the lens and offers good protection. Now I have to "break" the clip off so that I can still usign the housing.

Hey I have a question, if I get an otter box defender for my iPhone 8 will I have to take my screen protector off to fit it in the case? Or is there dead room between the cases screen protector and the phone?
Hi, I know you primarily test these cases on iPhones, but can you possibly recommend a protective, "drop proof" case for the Galaxy Note 9? As someone who is prone to accidental drops, I'd prefer a MIL-SPEC case that has enough of a raised lip on the top and bottom, but also maximum protection for the screen on the sides. I'd also prefer a case that has no affect on signal reception. Thanks in advance.
I have an s9, and I use the Otterbox Pursuit, Spigen Hybrid Armor and Tough Armor. They are all great cases.

So far the Rhinoshield Crashguard NX and the Utomic Bumper. I think I like the Rhinoshield the most. I'm still waiting for Thanotech to ship the K11 which maybe hte ultimate winner as I really liked the previous gens.

All I can say is I have the otter box commuter case along with a heavy duty glass I honestly don’t remember the glass brand it’s whatever Best Buy had. It’s to the point I really don’t even blink an eye if my phone gets dropped or thrown and otter box is the only case I’ll put my money on. I actually was riding my bike mount the phone via insta mount and I actually was not using the mount while changing my music and the thing actually got thrown hard out of my hand and into the air hit the damn concrete hard and bounced five times and landed face down. Final result was one tiny and I mean u have to know it’s there and be looking for it dent in the plastic casing and not one other mark or malfunction

I just bought the regular Defender for a Galaxy A50. I will have a screen protector installed on the phone. But, it still seems to me that if you dropped the phone screen down on to an irregularly shaped rock that the rubber sides might not protect the display. Hopefully I can avoid that scenario happening during bbackcountry hikes.
Is it a good idea to install a tempered glass protector on a iphone11 screen & then put on a Otterbox case that already comes with a screen protector? Would the screen respond as it should?

Grymmhain I have it and I love it. It's not as grippy on the sides but I don't have an issue with it I like that the ports are all covered too. Can't beat it for $19.99 on Amazon.

I am Thinking about getting the pursuit case but in the video the case knocked the screen protector off even thought it was a case friendly one. I want to know if this is the same for the defender and is you think that it will happen on the pursuit if you were to drop it once.

I’d like to see a video on the apple/otterBox statement case.
Inspired by your videos I recently went into the Apple store and purchased a OtterBox statement case but before I made the purchase I wanted to see it perform . I installed it on my brand new iPhone XS max and once it was on with full force slammed it screen side down on the table where the Apple genius totally freaked out, it was hysterical. When he asked me if I was crazy I told him I just want to see If there was enough screen protection, The guy was totally speechless then holding the phone in the case I threw it in the air where it landed face down on the tile and then pick that up to inspect the phone only find the phone and the case in perfect condition. Knowing what I know about OtterBox and the statement case I was confident that I wouldn’t walk away with a broken phone and I purchased the case. The guy who was helping me in the Apple Store had gotten his store manager and when he came over to me I asked if there was a problem while I laughed at him and told him that I was buying the case he caught on to my messing around and asked me not to do that in the store because I may inspire others to do the same and may not be as lucky as I was. So I thought you would enjoy this story it was definitely funny to see the reaction especially the customers in the store one guy asked me if I had a dummy phone. I used your line, real usage real phone real drops. I also purchased a forest green leather Apple case so I can enjoy the phones real feel. In the US the statement case is a Apple store exclusive I was told that it would be the only brand sold in store other than Apple’s own cases.
