If you have trouble connecting via remote desktop, the article in the comments has a typo which does not update the port correctly: Try the command: sudo sed -i 's/3398/3390/g' /etc/xrdp/xrdp.ini At 5:04, the video has an error trying to replace 3389 (not 3398) with 3390. Try the provided command in this comment and rerun the start command:

I funally got around to trying this today (Jan 30 2024, yes I know I'm really late on this) and every time I go to log into Ubuntu in the remote window, a couple seconds after I hit enter the window just closes. So if anyone sees this and has some sugestions, I'd really appreciate the input.
So i tried to do this in windows 11. Didn't get a GUI for one when initally setting up ubuntu from the microsoft store at all however i followed all of your steps. BUT i can sudo snap install anything at all as it can't comunicate with anything? Would i have done anything wrong?

localhost:3390 from rdp, gives me an error with optoins 1) this account is not permitted in the list of gateway, 2) remote pc written in NetBios format
Did you previously set a gateway in RDP for something else? Try to telnet into localhost 3390. If you get a blank screen returned then it's running. In RDP make sure no gateway is selected on the advanced tab.

Thanks for the video! After finishing the installation I found that the RDP connection closes right after the login screen. The error reported in ~/.xorgxrdp.10.log file was: systemd-logind: failed to take device /dev/dri/card0: Operation not permitted The solution for me was to create additional user and use it for RDP connection.
@@ccooksey1215 `sudo adduser somenewusername` , set pass, then when logging in to xrdp just use that new user. looks like it doesn't like the fact that you're logging in as sudo... :)
i was able to run all commands with no errors but with 2 differences: 1. when i installed Ubuntu from the store (made sure its the same as in the video) i wasn't presented with a GUI but a text based one. 2. i did not run into any DNS server issues. after the last step i got the: * Starting Remote Desktop Protocol server [ OK ] but when I use the same windows 10 pc to RDC into: localhost:3390 after a long Initiating a connection i get a 3 error cant connect. remote access not enabled/remote computer is turned off/not available on the network. last 2 seem inapplicable. the 1st one i got a confirmation that it was started, so.. any ideas?
You can always export your X sessions. Have a X server running natively on Windows and your windows will be native to Windows. You could've always done this since UNIX days
how is this different from just virtual machine? Is it just that as you add desktop env to WSL2, it just diminishes the benefits of using WSL2 in the first place and that WSL2 is more intended for just cmd line interface and operation?
I have followed those very steps but whenever I launch ubuntu, it opens cmd. I can't access the complete system like the desktops and stuff. Please help

im in windows 11 latest updates and it does not show a GUI at all. Only terminal.
If you do not get the GUI for the installer, thats ok. Just set user and password in the terminal and proceed, it dosen´t matter in the end.

The fact that you had debian and arch avaible and chose to use ubuntu baffles me.
debian and arch doesn't have a lot of guides for when it's in WSL, i had a lot of problems doing the simplest things

For the GUI, i think the video author is using Windows 11.
What OS are you using, what build no.?
