Ulnar nerve Anatomy: Origin, Course, Branches, Cubital Tunnel Syndrome, Guyon's canal syndrome
Origin
---------
• Ulnar nerve comes from the medial cord of the brachial plexus (C8-T1)
Course
-----------
Arm
• lies posteromedial to brachial artery in anterior compartment of upper 1/2 arm
• pierces medial IM septum at the arcade of Struthers ~ 8cm from medial epicondyle and lies medial to the triceps
• the arcade of Struthers is an aponeurotic band extending from the medial IM septum to the medial head of the triceps
Elbow
• runs behind medial epicondyle with superior ulnar collateral artery
Cubital tunnel
• roof - Osbourne’s ligament proximally (extension of deep forearm fascia between heads of FCU) and FCU aponeurosis distally
• floor - posterior and transverse bands of MCL and elbow joint capsule
• sends small sensory branch to elbow that can be sacrificed
Forearm
• enters forearm between 2 heads (humeral and ulnar heads) of FCU
• runs between FCU and FDP
Wrist
the ulnar nerve and artery pass superficial to the transverse carpal ligament
bifurcates into sensory and deep motor branches in Guyon's canal
• roof - volar carpal ligament
• floor - transverse carpal ligament, hypothenar muscles
• ulnar border - pisiform and pisohamate ligament, abductor digiti minimi muscle belly
• radial border - hook of hamate
Innervation
-------------------
Motor Innervation
forearm
• FCU
• FDP ring and small
Thenar
• adductor pollicis
• deep head of flexor pollicis brevis (FPB)
fingers
• interossei (dorsal & palmar)
• 3rd & 4th lumbricals
hypothenar muscles
• abductor digiti minimi
• opponens digiti minimi
• flexor digiti minimi
Sensory Innervation
sensory branches of ulnar nerve
• dorsal cutaneous branch
• palmar cutaneous branch
• superficial terminal branches
Clinical Anatomy
---------------------------
• Cubital Tunnel Syndrome is a condition that involves pressure or stretching of the ulnar nerve (also known as the “funny bone” nerve), which can cause numbness or tingling in the ring and small fingers, pain in the forearm, and/or weakness in the hand.
• Guyon's canal syndrome is an entrapment of the ulnar nerve as it passes through a tunnel in the wrist called Guyon's canal. This problem is similar to carpal tunnel syndrome but involves a completely different nerve. Sometimes both conditions can cause a problem in the same hand.

@@doctorbhanuprakash OK Sir.
Cubital tunnel syndrome...ulnar nerve compression...bcoz adduction of thumb lost and sensation lost over ventral and dorsal aspect of medial side of forearm
Thank you so much for this wonderful explanation about radial nerve 😍
You're so welcome!
Best animation and best concepts
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
02:25 🖐️ Ulnar nerve originates from the medial cord of the brachial plexus, innervates intrinsic hand muscles.
04:25 🛑 Cubital tunnel: Ulnar nerve passes posterior to medial epicondyle, causing cubital tunnel syndrome.
06:38 💪 Ulnar nerve supplies flexor carpi ulnaris and medial half of flexor digitorum profundus in forearm.
10:52 🤝 Guyon's canal: Ulnar nerve enters hand, divides into deep and superficial branches, innervating intrinsic hand muscles and skin.
16:23 ⚡ Ulnar neuropathy: Common at elbow (cubital tunnel) or wrist (Guyon's canal), causing muscle weakness, claw hand deformity.
Thank you for a lecture.
Glad it was helpful!
Very detailed presentation with visuals.

FPB is supplied by median nerve or deep branch of ulnar nerve? But thank u lots Dr. superb, You nailed it !!
dual supply.. fpb superficial head by median n., deep head by ulna n
Thank u sir... 🙏🏻

Sir how can i get all the vedio in sequence about upper limb and pectoral region?
👍👍
Sir ye content konsi book ka hai
Guyons canal syndrom
If the pain were at elbow level around cubital fossa and it gets worse during repetitive flexion and extension then it's cubital tunnel syndrome... Am I right doc?
Its cubital tunnel syndrome
Can you suggest different books of reference where all such details are available because B D Chaurasia doesn't contain much details?
@@doctorbhanuprakash Thank you so much Sir
Vishram contains everything he said here but he really simplified the hell out of this 😸
Thank u sir
Welcome
Sir if ulnar nerve cut properly then little finger is working, moving or not plz reply.
assalamoaliakum you have given a nice lecture .i have to ask a quiery that why we call the word colletral in radial colletral and ulnar colletral.and what is the meaning of brevis and longus.please describe all these in a precise way....thanks
Collateral means flow of blood in two artries is same and recurrent means opposite flow as it occurs in anastomosis around elbow joint in which we call as superior ulnar collateral artery having same blood flow as blood flow in main brachial artery whereas it is opposite in case of ant. Or post.ulnar recurrent artries branches of ulnar artery having flow opposite to main brachial artery it is upward in these arteries where as in brachial artery it is downward.
Brevis means small and longus means large
Sir I have been going to the gym and I got cubital tunnel syndrome and it keeps hopping from one side of my elbow to the other as I extend my elbow on my pushing exercises. The Ulnar nerve on my left arm seems much more inflamed than my right arm. I don't feel any pain or numbness as of yet but I'm afraid it would cause me some pain as time goes by if i keep going to the gym evn if i keep nerve flossing and treat it well. What should I do? Please help sir 🙏
Wowowowowowowowowowowoowwoowow..Thank U sir
Ur most welcome
If you’ve ever hit your funny bone you’ve perhaps struck a nerve.
The cubital tunnel and the ulnar nerve to be exact.
they should've played this vids for us at school instead of useless lectures! :D
