Hell of a gig
It's ridiculous to compare a self-taught drummer who learned on NWOBHM and hardcore punk who'd only been playing for 2 or so years before recording on his first album (and album that created and influenced an entire metal subgenre) to prog metal drummers and new school extreme metal drummers. Lars is perfect for Metallica and still killing it at 60.

Lars seems to be listening to the studio recordings again. He played 90% of the original fills and patterns in this song, normally 50% are missing.

Triggers are like microphones if you want, so it needs someone playing the drums and hiting the patchs (drumheads) to receive the signal.
Of course Lars is playing. You are confusing triggers with "playback".
