Well, my guess is that they are intelligent enough to tell the difference between big whaling ships and small hobby boats and similar, plus with their size, I don't think they see tiny humans alone as threats and therefore feel confident enough to approach the paddle boarders. It's easier to be gentle when you're too big to be threatened by 99% of Earth's creatures.
It's incredible how huge these animals are yet they made sure to move carefully enough not to turn the paddle board over. Such amazing gentle beasts 💜💜

Whales have way too much intelligence and eyesight to mistake the paddleboard for a calf. Curiosity and a sense of fun dictates its approach. And probably wondering what the weird, funny shaped creature is doing in its ocean !😎👍
