You really know your shit Fil and we all know you will just dominate when you compose/perform an old country style song similar to this! I lived in Nashville when Garth was becoming "a thing". I was fortunate to know some noted Nashville songwriters and producers at the time. When Garth came up as a subject of discussion, pretty much everyone said "this guy is someone to follow". Obviously "someone to follow" became an understatement in years to follow. Present day, I can't say that I'm a full-blown Garth fan, but I think anyone who says Garth hasn't made a significant contribution to "country music" is fooling themselves. Cheers!
Garth Brooks was my first love in the country music scene. Such a great song and one of my favorites. I love your analysis! Thanks for another great session!
Garth Brooks has a nice singing voice, he delivers the emotional feel his songs want to convey - there is sincerity in the way he sings/sounds. Garth Brook’s choice of songs compliments his voice and singing style.
He’s amazing in concert! I took my daughter for her 10th birthday and he gives it his all, just pours everything he has out on the stage. ‘Friends in Low Places’ is a fun song, even if you’re not into country, everyone gets into it. He has so many great songs. Great analysis Fil
I have never been a huge fan of country music but I do like and respect talent in any genre. Garth Brooks is one of those true talents I respect and I like a lot of his music. I am a native Oklahoman and I live close to the small town Garth Brooks is from. The man is an incredible storyteller with the talent to write, produce, play and sing his stories.
Many years ago my brother was doing sound playback on a video shoot that Garth Brooks was doing and asked me if I wanted to come along and hang out. During a break Garth was walking by and we asked if we can have a picture of us with him and he said of course he would. We talked a little bit and told him our mom was a big fan of his too and she lived in Oklahoma. Then he said give me your camera and I'll take a picture of you boys and you can send it back to your mom and tell her Garth took this picture of you. My brother worked on a few of his videos and said that he was always that nice.
Garth Brooks always did honest entertainment. His band is thoroughly professional and back him up without a lot of ostentatious flash. No messing around or over production.
Thanks for this analysis of Garth Brooks. He really is a great performer. Whether you like Country music or not, you just have to like Garth because he just knows how to sing a song. Good one Fil.
First song of his I ever heard, and I was hooked. Such an amazing performer. Funny, I was going to see if you had reviewed previously as I was going to suggest. While enjoying such a performance you really don't realize how much is going into it. Thanks for your discussion!

In the 90's when Garth was HUGE. I got invited to one of his concerts by a friend. Me being strictly a rock & roll girl at that time was hesitant to go... But I did!!! I'm SO glad I did!!! I actually LOVE & respect all Music. Looking back, because Garth was sucha big & popular artist, many of his songs are the background to my teen years... Love garth. He's actually a much better singer than many realise. He put out a box set of covers about ten years back. And he decided to try queen. He didn't hold back, covering no less than "Somebody to Love". And he pretty much absolutely nailed it. Surprised even me, a fan of over 2 decades.
Excellent analysis to this song from the band, each instrument, the blending of all of them, all the way up to Garth and his blending in to the song. I have an excellent ear for music and listening to it a second time I could hear everything that you mentioned. I can't play a damn thing, except for these videos on UA-cam, but I can pick out everything being played, so I do enjoy when everything does come together like that. Very well done!
I’d forgotten what a great singer, song writer, musician and actor he is. He uses his body, guitar, lighting and his facial features to make it all a sensual performance. Like you say too, it’s the way the instruments are played that also add to that seduction! Thank you so much Fil ! 🇨🇦🙏🏻🙏🏾🙏🏻❤️✝️☝🏻
As someone who grew up with Garth in the background all the time I knew all his songs and enjoyed them but never was what I would call a serious fan. As such when he came to play in my hometown a couple of years ago I wasn't going to go at first. A friend of mine badgered me into going and while I thought I would enjoy seeing the show and hearing all those songs I had known in the past I had no idea what an unbelievably good concert Garth puts on. Easily one of the best concert experiences I ever had. Garth is a showman and he wants the folks at the show to have a good time and they do. And he can still sing like he used to. A lot of artists have destroyed their voices over the years not to mention that they sometimes just seem to be phoning it in to get that check. That was not the case with Garth.
Fabulous breakdown on the great Garth Brooks and the song! I am truly hearing, seeing and learning from a whole different perspective on arraingments and progressions of the end product from the precision precession! Best videos, I've ever watched about the analysis of artists and their music! Thank you.
Clapping!!! I thoroughly enjoyed this analysis. That is saying a lot for this heavy metal fan!! Garth is a super power in Country Music and a great person. He gave a young teenage girl her Make a Wish dream come true by bringing her on his tour bus. When I hear this beautiful song, I think of Erin.
Wow he looks so young there. He was, this was the very beginning of his career. Guess I just forgot he ever looked this young until seeing it again now.
I guess I'm one of about five or so earthlings who never actually listened to any Garth Brooks before. Do love the sentiment of this song! And I appreciate how well done this was, thanks for the very beautiful analysis, Fil.
Country fan or not, the lyrics to this song are well written and sung. Analysis is appreciated as is the diversity of the selections you make to analyze.🤘
Thank you Fil for the great analysis. Garth has a voice that draws you in, made me like country music, which I never really was a fan of, but definitely a monster talent. ☮🖤🤘
One thing I always liked about this era of country music- live- was the insane skill of the musicians. They were ALWAYS spot on! I went to a lot of country shows back in the 90's and early 2000s, and every one of them was fantastic live. They really could sing and play like that. It's one reason I've seen Alan Jackson 4 times- those guys always came to PLAY. You simply don't get a gig touring with one of these acts, unless you're that good.
Woah, thanks for featuring Garth Brooks, Fil!!😊❣ "If tomorrow never comes", The Dance" , " Friends in low places", etc...our favorite songs during our university years❤🎵🎶🎸🎤 🥰... The biggest selling artist of the 90s decade. Huge # 1 albums. In concert Garth is amazing high energy and puts everything into his shows. The showmanship the voice and the charisma with GREAT songs. I was never much of a country music fan but a huge Garth Brooks fan. His concerts simply amazing! Excellent analysis and demo Fil! 🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦
Another great analysis, Fil. I didn't know how much he sold, but it makes sense. I have at least five of his CDs, and I rarely buy CDs. The only person I have more CDs from is Willie Nelson. You may not know how many years Garth took off to spend with his kids so that he could have even had sold more. Like Mary Chapin Carpenter, Brad Paisley, Louis Bertignac, Thomas Dutronc, Patrick Bruel and others, Garth popped up live during the long covid confinement to bring joy to his fans, as you did, Fil. Thank you all.
In this excellent analysis Fil, you explain in detail how the orchestration of the composition affects how we listen and react emotionally to it. Enjoyed this one!
My favorite Garth Brooks album is his “Chris Gaines” rock album. Awesome lyrics throughout. He performed one song as Gaines on Jay Leno and most people never realized it was Garth.
This is a great analysis video on Garth Brooks! I appreciate the time and effort you put into this and all of your analysis videos from all genres. Have you ever done an analysis video on singer and songwriter Keith Whitley? He was a big Country artist back in the late 1980s, but passed away in 1989. He could really pour his heart out in a song too.
Thanks for the video. What a huge contrast to your prior video about Badfinger. They were very talented with great songwriting skills but were taken advantage of by unscrupulous people in the entertainment business. I love the music of Bandfinger and grieve over the way they were treated. On the otherhand, Garth Brooks had a degree in marketing from Oklahoma State and had an understanding that while he was an artist, music was also a business. He was able to keep control of his career and sought council and legal advice to protect himself. I think he had a pragmatic view of the music industry that other recording artists don't. I've been a big fan of Garth from the get go. Thanks again.
The pedal steel is magnificent here. I've never been a huge fan of his, but his song"The Dance", (written by Tony Arata) has a special place in my heart. I lost my soulmate way too young 10 yrs. ago, and I've found comfort in the lyrics....."And now I'm glad I don't know The way it all would end The way it all would go. Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain But I'd of had to miss the dance". I would do it all over again because we loved each other, and I know I will see him again someday. So thanks Tony for writing such a beautiful song, and to Garth for singing it in an achingly touching way. Fil, your voice is beautiful .☮️💜
Oh Cindy, I am so sorry for your loss. I can be shopping, hear "The Dance" on the store's sound system and have to really struggle to not burst into tears. It's super evocative.
Hi Cindy, I am sorry to hear about this, too. Been wondering how to express it and looked at what you wrote again. You tell it with these beautiful words---soulmate, heart, the dance, we loved each other. Seems you both experienced something so elusive to many---a happy marriage. I really love hearing that! That's how it should always be, and it should last. I am very sure that there is a Creator who longs to reunite loved ones forever.

Houston Texas THANKS YOU FOR THIS! Garth is THE MAN! I have seen him in concert many times. It's the highest energy sing along concert of all times. Of course I sat at the stage because I wouldn't experience it any other way. If you have never seen him live. I highly recommend it if COVID ever leaves. And Jimmy Mattingly is the best fiddle player in the world! Love his smile. God bless you Fil and I pray you had a great Easter. Where's the chocolate?💜🕊
Great analyses as always Fil. It always blows my mind that a rocker like yourself is so vested in an analysis of other Genre's. you always say the right thing and are spot on most of the time. You are seriously talented my friend just not as a musician but as a a person who can put a song into perspective. I guess that's why you have so many followers. You are a super talent. Loved this analysis
Garth is a wild man if you have never seen him live you're missing a real treat. When her gets this wild look in his eyes almost like a kid in a candy store for the first time and being told to buy what your heart's content and then he started running around on stage like that kid that is on sugar high from eating all that candy.
I was surely was thinking of your sharp reviews. And your evident love of music missed seeing you for quite some time. Finally subscribed. Nice job on the choice, and your respect of music and other artists. Hoping great success to you young man. God bless. God is always there and listens to the quietest prayer.
I reside in the Southern USA (Florida) , so I've gotten to enjoy Country music. He is so great and he has that twang. Tnanks for sharing. I like that he kinda updated his image to the black, it needed help (show biz) Yes, great despite the genre, is great. But I wonder if he is appealing in Europe?
Great stuff Fil. Garth was one of the artists that got me interested and playing country music. True Legend. But I have correct you.. As a Drummer. The "Rim Shot" as you call it is not A Rim Shot, It's a Cross Stick. Rim Shot is when you strike the center of the drum and the rim at the same time. Cross stick is played by flipping the stick over and playing the rim while the stick rests partly on the drum head for shifting the dynamics in the verse part in a lot of Country. :)
My favorite Garth song is The Dance I feel this song strongly because I went through a divorce from the love of my life. I will always love him, but I will always be grateful for the time we had.
Yep, Garth is in the 'century club' in US album sales. Artists that have sold over 100 million copies. They include The Beatles, Garth Books, Elvis Presley, The Eagles, and Led Zeppelin.
Country is from the ❤ heart. Smithkline billionaire i did work for in the late 80's said why do you listen to country. I said it's from the heart .he said yeah: beer/ pick up trucks/ girl's Love.. I asked him what he likes he said jazz or classical. I said i play jazz to . i listen to classical all music is great but real life situations i drawl inspiration. He had an Olympic swimming pool he kept heated all year long and never swam in it. He had Harleys he never rode. I said what a waste. I stripped to my undies and dive into the pool in February 😃. I showed him some country...
Wonderful video and fascinating analysis as usual, Fil. Thank you! But disappointed to see last comment on this page (by Motersickle Bum) re race - which seemed inappropriate on this music site.

When her gets this wild look in his eyes almost like a kid in a candy store for the first time and being told to buy what your heart's content and then he started running around on stage like that kid that is on sugar high from eating all that candy.
Love Garth Brooks voice! A very talented artist!
I was surely was thinking of your sharp reviews. And your evident love of music missed seeing you for quite some time. Finally subscribed. Nice job on the choice, and your respect of music and other artists. Hoping great success to you young man. God bless. God is always there and listens to the quietest prayer.
That sure was a huge song. He blew up after that. For a few years he was the biggest singer on the planet...Crazy!!
perfect in every detail
I never had much interest in country music until I heard Garth. He has so many awesome songs, and he really loves his fans.
I wish i had your talent SO GOOD.
Love me some Garth Brooks & Elvis Presley of course. 💕 Again thanks for sharing !
Beautiful Song
Loved the 80s and 90s. So much good music. I listened to metal and country and just about everything else I guess lol.
Yasssss👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 ❤️Hello from Nashville TN.!!!
Always a 6 sting party when Garth picks up a guitar, great one Fil, Jeff in LA USA
Great song and this got me into country. I heard it on radio 2 and had no clue just how big Garth was. I recommend his documentary on Netflix 👍🏽
Also to add I believe country music has some of the beautiful music ever written!!!
Music......the universal language of love.....
It would be amazing to see a video analysis of Jewel Kilcher! Such a nice combination of good songwriting and vocal talent :)
Love your analysis.
Thanks!
Great song. Great performer, great analysis.
He introduced Chris Ledoux to mainstream country fans and out of the Rodeo scene. For that, he gets a solid thumbs up.....
He’s really loved in his home town of Yukon Oklahoma
His music is so relatable, he can attract people from every genre.
My favourite is Friends in low places
I like that song too.
Especially the “illusive” 3rd verse
Garths live performance of Shameless is what I consider how best. Shows a bit of rock edge in that one.
Phil, I really like your song: Its metal ( to my ears ).
Thanks!
Thunder Rolls is My Fave ,I Think That's the Name of it ,Awesome Video🤘🖤✌
Love this song too.
“every box ticked” 👍 rock! 🔥
My favorite Garth song is The Dance
I feel this song strongly because I went through a divorce from the love of my life. I will always love him, but I will always be grateful for the time we had.
Yep, Garth is in the 'century club' in US album sales. Artists that have sold over 100 million copies. They include The Beatles, Garth Books, Elvis Presley, The Eagles, and Led Zeppelin.
Nice job Wingman wonderfully interesting , love Garth

Have seen him twice in concert. He indeed puts on an amazing show!

The River, Shameless Garth Brooks
Would catch a solid buzz at the bar, stumble over to juke box and select Friends in low places and Rodeo ..
Pedal steel cuts my soul in half every time I hear one
Country is from the ❤ heart.
Smithkline billionaire i did work for in the late 80's said why do you listen to country. I said it's from the heart .he said yeah: beer/ pick up trucks/ girl's
Love..
