I remember when we couldn’t move A80’s to save our lives because people thought they were too fat, too heavy and too expensive. We still had unsold 97’s sitting around unsold in 2000 and 2001. Doc Hollywood, we are not disputing the speed we are talking about units sold and popular on the street. The Supra is like the GTR you rarely see them on the streets. However, they are fast sports cars (maybe its price, brand, exterior, etc.).
Long story short. Paid off my RCF and I was excited when this thing was announced since I used to own a 1989 Supra. They brought one at the local Toyota dealer but I ended up pretty disappointed at how much BMW bits it had. The car drove great and had that signature BMW noise too. It just felt cheap in a sense that it felt like BMW had 95% of it's Z4 car in it. So I decided to just keep my RCF and see what Lexus does to the F cars. I know they're working on the LCF so there's that.
If Toyota teamed up with BMW and called this anything else it would have been a hit, calling it a supra is disingenuous to the supra heritage. The Supra of today is a lot like movie remakes, minimal effort into creating it banking on the history of the name for sales.
The engine may be 100% BMW and it is built by BMW but the whole chasis was co-developed with Toyota to meet their standards and be used along with the new Z4 to save production costs as sports cars don't sell as well anymore. Plus Toyota don't make a straight 6 anymore and that was the beating heart of the Supra, i'm a Toyota purist and I have no problems with this car I think it's awesome we can still have a Supra in these times.
Even if Toyota tests it to their reliability standards it won’t lower the complexity of the engine. It’s still a bmw so expect it to not be the least reliable Toyota

i think it is a decent car but to me toyota’s collaboration with subaru on the 86/BRZ is much more driver centric, practical, cheaper and only improving as shown with the features of the redesign. it would be hard for me to justify getting this car over the 86 on anything other than name alone.

I’ve followed where the vents would be on some cars and it wouldn’t let any air in (if any) at all. You would have to make more holes on the inside on some of these newer cars lol my third gen f body is getting a dremel and cutting wheel soon
When you were "reviewing" the trunk/hatch, there was a small black box inside. To me, it looked like a 'Glock' box. But I may have been mistaken. Great review of the car. As always.
First off that's a BMW motor. BMW has been making I6 motors for decades. They're not returning, they're already there and Toyota in their stupidity and laziness went to BMW instead of reworking their existing 2JZ.

That 'Reverse" light is actually an homage to F1 rain lights....They made it into a reverse light, thought that was cool! and I think it's neat that Toyota got together with one of the best sports car manufacturers to help them build this car....Building a new car, including drivetrain, is NOT CHEAP and Toyota was smart - Since they don't have an inline 6 engine, they asked BMW for help. Together with Toyota's reliability and BMW's expertise in sport tuning - I think this is an awesome car! (but they shouldn't have named it the Supra, lol)
There is no Toyota reliability because the drivetrain is not a collaboration of Toyota and BMW it's just flat out a BMW. There is not Toyota in the drivetrain and in fact most nowhere on the car so Toyota reliability isn't a thing on this car

Great review Sarah! If you took away the nameplates and just viewed the car on its merits; it deserves the five penguins score. The complaint isn't really that Toyota collaborated with BMW. Its viewed as a copout. The Supra was a Japanese icon that was an evolution of the earlier Celica Supra. It was Japanese through and through, not a blend. Toyota is a hugely successfully very wealthy company that has the resources to make their own Supra with their own development that is uniquely Toyota. Yes its a really cool car that has gobs of power. It's just that it's too much of a BMW clone. The collaboration appears to be more BMW than Toyota. It's obvious that the Toyota bean counter accountants were in charge of the project and demanded that if they were to make another Supra they would save money by buying the technology from another car company. BMW was like sure no problem, "Ja we just make more money"
There should be a new generation of the 2JZ-GTE Toyota in that. Plus it made the same power back in 1990. I don't think you would have bought your mr2 if it had a gm 4 popper in it.
The JZ series is no longer in production ever since. Their successor is the "GR" series *(GR series is a V6 Engine made by Toyota, look it up).* I wish that Toyota made a Performance version of a GR Engine and put into their new "Supra" instead of the BMW i6. Like, just take their BMW's Z4 Chassis and use their own Engine in it instead. But oh well, I understand the Toyota's afraid to spend a lot of money into making a new Sports Cars again.

The whole car is engineered by BMW. Toyota just wrote a check to BMW and tuned the car so technically it is a BMW. It's a great sports car but fans wanted a Japanese built Supra and not a German one. I think Toyota should have kept the FT1 name for this car.
“You have to be mildly intelligent...which apparently I am not” I’m just so glad I’m not the only one who felt like that 😂 i had a company vehicle for a little while that was a white 2019 4 series bmw with a drop top, less than 10k miles were on it, and it was SO hard to get used to since my personal cars either had crank windows or the radio didn’t work hahaha. The sound system on the 4 serious is incredible on it, even with the drop top and is 100% worth figuring out for that reason alone. Not sure abt the Supra yet tho but my shop has two of them currently and I plan to test that out 😍 Love this review!

Nice styling on the outside not so great on the inside. That chime reminds everyone it's a BMW every time they get in it. If car companies want to do collaborations, one should do all the styling on the inside and out and leave the engineering to the other. It would be good if you could review a Z4 and let us know which is better.
You know Sarah, the body shape of this car is super sexy...just like you. The problem is, you are the real deal and the car is great BUT it is an imposter for Toyota. I think Toyota should be ashamed that they outsourced this to BMW. I think BMW quality has seriously declined over the last several decades, where as Toyota is maybe the very best for quality and durability. I am a huge fan of Toyota and defend the brand to the end but not with this Imposter.
I was so excited when I heard they were going to go ahead with the new Supra. Then I heard they were using a Z4 chassis as the base and I was completely disappointed. I still am.
Just bought a 21, I currently daily it. I have an hour each way commute to work. It’s comfortable, and I still average close to 30. I drive it pretty hard. Lots of highway driving though.
well, its a BMW in a frock, much like the Masserati MC-12 is basically an Enzo in drag. Or like the GT86 is a Subaru with a Toyota badge. Toyota used to make some of the best sports cars, and they've gotten out of it, to focus on family cars. The LFA was probably Toyota's swansong for their internally made high performance cars.
As a BMW N54 engine owner, they are great engines. The negative is that the owner gets to rebuild everything surrounding their engine at 100k miles. Definitely not a hassle free Toyota

I read somewhere that Toyota went through that engine design before production and made a few changes in the design for reliability. I think it's a beautiful car.
BMW has more experience making inline six cylinder than most other car companies. Yes the 2JZ is incredible, but the fact that it's gone and been replaced with something else does not make the Toyota/BMW collaboration bad in any way. This BMW engine is already proving can respond to and hold up to mods as well as a 2JZ.
You're right. People need to get over the BMW thing. Car companies have had synergies for years. We're all too spoiled. If you want one, buy and enjoy. If not look elsewhere and stop criticizing.

People are confused because it is neither a Toyota or a Supra. The MKV Toyota Supra would be way less misunderstood if they didn't name it a Supra and instead named it a BMW Z4 TRD. If they did that it would make perfect sense and nobody would be confused and the car wouldn't be misunderstood.

Sarah to answer your question, nothing wrong with collaboration! Look at the Fiat Spider 124 (we just picked up a white 2020 Lusso)...body and engine from Italy , but all the rest from Mazda! This way you get Japanese reliability with Italian flare! Win win!
BMW makes such awesome in line sixes, that's why you should get the Z3. If someone grafted the previous generation supra body on to the corresponding generation Z3, could you still call it a supra? The soul of this one is not Toyota.
I agree some of the criticisms that it’s a BMW are just piling on. But having owned three BMWs, I can assure you that the engines are anything but bullet proof. Sure, pistons, cranks, and other internals will last forever, but there is so much else that will break way before it should.
Its a bimmer. Nothing will change that. I do appreciate your review tho. I think alot of ppl including myself wanted a complete Japanese made car, not a Japanese car with with a German heart and body and slap the name supra on it. Its not real.
This is an amazing car regardless the bmw dna in it. But what we can’t ignore is the fact that after 5 years it will start having major issues as the bmw heart it has.
Bmw's with the same engines are still rolling with really no major issues to speak of. Some have already passed their 5 year mark and are still rolling around and are doing just fine as long as normal maintenance or replace a few things is done and they roll around just fine. Engine was made to not have the most of the problems the 35i's i6s(the N54/55)had so it was made stronger than them so it wouldn't have the same problems as those had.
Finally a review that read my mind . All the haters are just dumb kids and boomers who wanted a $200,000 hypercar Supra that they could never buy . Everyone hating because they made the car affordable to the average person.

I don’t understand the backlash this car gets, so what it has a BMW Drivetrain. BMW makes some of the best drivers cars, so I’m glad Toyota worked with BMW. Nobody complained that the GT86 had a Subaru flat 4.
The two biggest things for me...the easy one is no manual transmission (yet). Automatics just don't create the same feeling of connectedness and entertainment value as a manual. I drove a 2019 BMW with the ZF 8 speed, and it was decent, but I'm still not convinced...they're just too pushbutton and too easy...and you still can't skip gears in manual mode, and you are still having to que downshifts in a closed loop fashion if you want to go from say 8th to 3rd....push it 5 times, hope you didn't push them too fast, que up one second of mental elevator music while waiting, verify the computer gave you what you wanted, etc etc. 6th to 2nd on a manual is ONE motion that is also an open loop process. I know exactly what motion to do, exactly how long it will take, exactly when I get power back to the wheels, and nothing to have to verify. Timing and rhythm is more fluid and natural especially when you need to go from tame cruising to bats out of hell to pass someone. Second is the engine...nothing against the BMW motor, but one of the most significant things that made the Mark IV so legendary is what everybody knows...the almighty 2JZ, and there's been nothing quite like it. I think a lot of people including me were anticipating another wholly unique in house successor to the 2JZ, and.....well, just plucking an engine out of another platform in cookie cutter fashion is a huge let down for those hoping for another unique Toyota legend. The B58 is good, but it's not at that level of special... A more extreme example to illustrate the sentiment is like if Honda announced a new generation S2000 and then put a Ford ecoboost in it....That F20C was the source of like 95% of the epicness and soul of the original S2000...Honda fans would feel completely cheated. Supra fans probably don't feel AS cheated as that, but it's the same feeling.
I bought a 6speed 2020 Corolla hatchback SE without knowing how to drive a manual. Super easy to learn to drive manual on it, and I'm speaking from personal experience. Love the brake hold and electronic parking brake features, because they prevent an inexperienced manual driver (like me!) from rolling backwards on an incline or a hill. Oh, and it's such a blast to drive. To anyone who might be reading this, I highly recommend the new Corolla if you've ever wanted to learn to drive stick.
Agreed. A slightly taller geared 6spd would probably out-perform the auto8. And they're just so much more fun to drive, burn expensive rubber and slide the ass around on a dime. Especially in a dedicated sports car. Cheaper to build & maintain also. A clutch disk/throw out bearing way cheaper than any auto trans repair. Guessing even more so with a German trans.
It’s funny that the Japanese did a huge amount of changes to the BMW engine because they said the BMW engine wasn’t acceptable because it’s design and materials used in the engine will make it unreliable and it also lends its self to frequent break downs.
How do u know? If it were so unreliable then the BMW's with this same engine wouldn't have been rolling over 5-600whp a few years before the mk5 was even released. And if anything the 600-700whp mk5s would've started breaking down by now but they haven't yet and are still climbing numbers as we speak. It's not a N54.
I have way more tech horsepower, style and room in my 2019 Mustang GT premium and its price tag was about 13K cheaper than the supra and I have heated and vented seats and it came with staggered tires in the rear and a spoiler. The price tag they put on that BMW they call a supra is insane. At minimum you should have heated vented seats. Silly Toyota tricks are for kids.
Yet somehow your Mustang is still slower, has significantly worse mileage, worse braking, worse handling. Yeah sorry, I'd rather pay a bit more for the Supra.
The thing is while the Huayra uses an AMG engine, the rest of the car, for the least, pertains the signature style of Pagani. From what I understand the Supra has it's entire drivetrain built by BMW: B58 engine, 8 speed torque converter transmission from ZF, and even the interior is identical to every other modern BMW.

The Mark II Supra had Lotus suspension. I had an '84' and it was a great car. It was slow by today's standards, but pretty awesome back then.

The Mclaren F1, arguably the best car of the 90s, had a BMW engine and you wouldn't have to argue too long and would win.
The engine in the F1 was designed pretty much from scratch by Paul Rosche. It was made for the F1. They are completely different situations.

Great review Sarah! If you took away the nameplates and just viewed the car on its merits; it deserves the five penguins score. The complaint isn't really that Toyota collaborated with BMW. Its viewed as a copout. The Supra was a Japanese icon that was an evolution of the earlier Celica Supra. It was Japanese through and through, not a blend. Toyota is a hugely successfully very wealthy company that has the resources to make their own Supra with their own development that is uniquely Toyota. Yes its a really cool car that has gobs of power. It's just that it's too much of a BMW clone. The collaboration appears to be more BMW than Toyota. It's obvious that the Toyota bean counter accountants were in charge of the project and demanded that if they were to make another Supra they would save money by buying the technology from another car company. BMW was like sure no problem, "Ja we just make more money"
Good review , the S54 ,N54, N55 and B58 are very good engines. The B58 together with the Japanese tuning is a nice mix .
There should be a new generation of the 2JZ-GTE Toyota in that. Plus it made the same power back in 1990. I don't think you would have bought your mr2 if it had a gm 4 popper in it.
2JZ-GTE didn't exist in 1990.
The JZ series is no longer in production ever since. Their successor is the "GR" series *(GR series is a V6 Engine made by Toyota, look it up).*
I wish that Toyota made a Performance version of a GR Engine and put into their new "Supra" instead of the BMW i6. Like, just take their BMW's Z4 Chassis and use their own Engine in it instead.
But oh well, I understand the Toyota's afraid to spend a lot of money into making a new Sports Cars again.
There was a supercharged 2GR that was put in some Toyota Mark X models in Japan.

I guess the previous gen Z4 only existed in my mind cause it sure looks like a silhouette of a Z4 coupe to me.
People enjoy the reliability of Toyotas. People do not appreciate the unreliability of BMWs. That's the basic conflict.
The whole car is engineered by BMW. Toyota just wrote a check to BMW and tuned the car so technically it is a BMW. It's a great sports car but fans wanted a Japanese built Supra and not a German one. I think Toyota should have kept the FT1 name for this car.
It's not misunderstood, it's not a bad car, it's just not a Toyota.

“You have to be mildly intelligent...which apparently I am not” I’m just so glad I’m not the only one who felt like that 😂 i had a company vehicle for a little while that was a white 2019 4 series bmw with a drop top, less than 10k miles were on it, and it was SO hard to get used to since my personal cars either had crank windows or the radio didn’t work hahaha. The sound system on the 4 serious is incredible on it, even with the drop top and is 100% worth figuring out for that reason alone. Not sure abt the Supra yet tho but my shop has two of them currently and I plan to test that out 😍 Love this review!

Calling that z4 a "supra" is nothing but a slap in the face to Supra fans everwhere...
If it were a face slap it wouldn't be simple to rip numbers out of them so simply. Nor would it as useful as it is now.
Nice styling on the outside not so great on the inside. That chime reminds everyone it's a BMW every time they get in it.
If car companies want to do collaborations, one should do all the styling on the inside and out and leave the engineering to the other.

You know Sarah, the body shape of this car is super sexy...just like you. The problem is, you are the real deal and the car is great BUT it is an imposter for Toyota. I think Toyota should be ashamed that they outsourced this to BMW. I think BMW quality has seriously declined over the last several decades, where as Toyota is maybe the very best for quality and durability. I am a huge fan of Toyota and defend the brand to the end but not with this Imposter.

Just bought a 21, I currently daily it. I have an hour each way commute to work. It’s comfortable, and I still average close to 30. I drive it pretty hard. Lots of highway driving though.
The only problem is its actually a BMW.
well, its a BMW in a frock, much like the Masserati MC-12 is basically an Enzo in drag. Or like the GT86 is a Subaru with a Toyota badge. Toyota used to make some of the best sports cars, and they've gotten out of it, to focus on family cars. The LFA was probably Toyota's swansong for their internally made high performance cars.
As a BMW N54 engine owner, they are great engines. The negative is that the owner gets to rebuild everything surrounding their engine at 100k miles. Definitely not a hassle free Toyota

BMW has more experience making inline six cylinder than most other car companies. Yes the 2JZ is incredible, but the fact that it's gone and been replaced with something else does not make the Toyota/BMW collaboration bad in any way. This BMW engine is already proving can respond to and hold up to mods as well as a 2JZ.

People are confused because it is neither a Toyota or a Supra. The MKV Toyota Supra would be way less misunderstood if they didn't name it a Supra and instead named it a BMW Z4 TRD. If they did that it would make perfect sense and nobody would be confused and the car wouldn't be misunderstood.

Sarah to answer your question, nothing wrong with collaboration! Look at the Fiat Spider 124 (we just picked up a white 2020 Lusso)...body and engine from Italy , but all the rest from Mazda! This way you get Japanese reliability with Italian flare! Win win!

If someone grafted the previous generation supra body on to the corresponding generation Z3, could you still call it a supra? The soul of this one is not Toyota.
efonefiddy if it’s the S54 Z3 M Coupe, yes, otherwise get a Z4 M Coupe - same engine but the final version.
I agree some of the criticisms that it’s a BMW are just piling on. But having owned three BMWs, I can assure you that the engines are anything but bullet proof. Sure, pistons, cranks, and other internals will last forever, but there is so much else that will break way before it should.
The a few of the parts in the i6 are derived from a diesel.

This is an amazing car regardless the bmw dna in it. But what we can’t ignore is the fact that after 5 years it will start having major issues as the bmw heart it has.
Bmw's with the same engines are still rolling with really no major issues to speak of. Some have already passed their 5 year mark and are still rolling around and are doing just fine as long as normal maintenance or replace a few things is done and they roll around just fine. Engine was made to not have the most of the problems the 35i's i6s(the N54/55)had so it was made stronger than them so it wouldn't have the same problems as those had.
Supra = BMW with roof and odd design things. Please test the genuine Z4! The original without Japanese decorations!

Absolutly fantastic car. Gets a lot of unnecessary hate, and already, the b58 is looking incredibly promising and beating the 2jz in some aspects.
Why the B58 is a 2JZ killer? Lighter engine, Crazy Tuning potential, forged pistons and rods, Stronger Stock Turbo and Bigger Turbo friendly.

I don’t understand the backlash this car gets, so what it has a BMW Drivetrain. BMW makes some of the best drivers cars, so I’m glad Toyota worked with BMW. Nobody complained that the GT86 had a Subaru flat 4.

What do you mean
The two biggest things for me...the easy one is no manual transmission (yet). Automatics just don't create the same feeling of connectedness and entertainment value as a manual. I drove a 2019 BMW with the ZF 8 speed, and it was decent, but I'm still not convinced...they're just too pushbutton and too easy...and you still can't skip gears in manual mode, and you are still having to que downshifts in a closed loop fashion if you want to go from say 8th to 3rd....push it 5 times, hope you didn't push them too fast, que up one second of mental elevator music while waiting, verify the computer gave you what you wanted, etc etc. 6th to 2nd on a manual is ONE motion that is also an open loop process. I know exactly what motion to do, exactly how long it will take, exactly when I get power back to the wheels, and nothing to have to verify. Timing and rhythm is more fluid and natural especially when you need to go from tame cruising to bats out of hell to pass someone.
Second is the engine...nothing against the BMW motor, but one of the most significant things that made the Mark IV so legendary is what everybody knows...the almighty 2JZ, and there's been nothing quite like it. I think a lot of people including me were anticipating another wholly unique in house successor to the 2JZ, and.....well, just plucking an engine out of another platform in cookie cutter fashion is a huge let down for those hoping for another unique Toyota legend. The B58 is good, but it's not at that level of special... A more extreme example to illustrate the sentiment is like if Honda announced a new generation S2000 and then put a Ford ecoboost in it....That F20C was the source of like 95% of the epicness and soul of the original S2000...Honda fans would feel completely cheated. Supra fans probably don't feel AS cheated as that, but it's the same feeling.

I bought a 6speed 2020 Corolla hatchback SE without knowing how to drive a manual. Super easy to learn to drive manual on it, and I'm speaking from personal experience. Love the brake hold and electronic parking brake features, because they prevent an inexperienced manual driver (like me!) from rolling backwards on an incline or a hill. Oh, and it's such a blast to drive. To anyone who might be reading this, I highly recommend the new Corolla if you've ever wanted to learn to drive stick.
Agreed. A slightly taller geared 6spd would probably out-perform the auto8. And they're just so much more fun to drive, burn expensive rubber and slide the ass around on a dime. Especially in a dedicated sports car. Cheaper to build & maintain also. A clutch disk/throw out bearing way cheaper than any auto trans repair. Guessing even more so with a German trans.
It’s funny that the Japanese did a huge amount of changes to the BMW engine because they said the BMW engine wasn’t acceptable because it’s design and materials used in the engine will make it unreliable and it also lends its self to frequent break downs.
How do u know? If it were so unreliable then the BMW's with this same engine wouldn't have been rolling over 5-600whp a few years before the mk5 was even released. And if anything the 600-700whp mk5s would've started breaking down by now but they haven't yet and are still climbing numbers as we speak. It's not a N54.

I have way more tech horsepower, style and room in my 2019 Mustang GT premium and its price tag was about 13K cheaper than the supra and I have heated and vented seats and it came with staggered tires in the rear and a spoiler. The price tag they put on that BMW they call a supra is insane. At minimum you should have heated vented seats. Silly Toyota tricks are for kids.
Yet somehow your Mustang is still slower, has significantly worse mileage, worse braking, worse handling. Yeah sorry, I'd rather pay a bit more for the Supra.

The thing is while the Huayra uses an AMG engine, the rest of the car, for the least, pertains the signature style of Pagani.
From what I understand the Supra has it's entire drivetrain built by BMW: B58 engine, 8 speed torque converter transmission from ZF, and even the interior is identical to every other modern BMW.
Engines not 100% identical. It has different heads,higher compression ratio,a bigger turbo,and stronger fuel lines that can't be found on other B58s.
